The past, the present and a glorious future by Gary Rose



















Yesterday, I learned my cousin has cancer and a high school classmate does as well. The days of youth have become just a memory. People grow old and die; that fact of life is becoming more apparent as time goes by.

Yet, these things are nothing new, for I have known about life and death since I was very young. And while young, I lived as if I would never grow old nor die. Even doing foolish and often dangerous things seemed perfectly "normal"- adventurous, even.

Then, in my early twenties, I woke up. It happened after I started my second or third time reading through the Bible. I realized that I needed God and just doing things my own way was a recipe for disaster.

As I thought about my cancer ridden friends, this passage from the book of James came to the forefront of my reflections...


James, Chapter 4 (World English Bible)
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”  14 Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.  15 For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.” (emphasis added, vs 15) 16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.  17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin. 


We really don't know what next year, next month or even tomorrow will bring. If we live according to God's will, then what happens in our life, will please him now and for eternity. Youth will still be replaced by age and robust health by the scourge of disease, but even through these things, God will be there to bless us.

I have no idea what you think of these things, but as for me- I don't intend to be like snoopy and take it lying down!!! Instead, I anticipate God raising me UP!!!

Proverbs 5-8

Pro 5:1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding:
Pro 5:2 that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge.
Pro 5:3 For the lips of an adulteress drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil,
Pro 5:4 But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword.
Pro 5:5 Her feet go down to death. Her steps lead straight to Sheol.
Pro 5:6 She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn't know it.
Pro 5:7 Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Don't depart from the words of my mouth.
Pro 5:8 Remove your way far from her. Don't come near the door of her house,
Pro 5:9 lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one;
Pro 5:10 lest strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors enrich another man's house.
Pro 5:11 You will groan at your latter end, when your flesh and your body are consumed,
Pro 5:12 and say, "How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
Pro 5:13 neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!
Pro 5:14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin, in the midst of the gathered assembly."
Pro 5:15 Drink water out of your own cistern, running water out of your own well.
Pro 5:16 Should your springs overflow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares?
Pro 5:17 Let them be for yourself alone, not for strangers with you.
Pro 5:18 Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
Pro 5:19 A loving doe and a graceful deer-- let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Be captivated always with her love.
Pro 5:20 For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another?
Pro 5:21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of Yahweh. He examines all his paths.
Pro 5:22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.
Pro 5:23 He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.

Pro 6:1 My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger;
Pro 6:2 You are trapped by the words of your mouth. You are ensnared with the words of your mouth.
Pro 6:3 Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, seeing you have come into the hand of your neighbor. Go, humble yourself. Press your plea with your neighbor.
Pro 6:4 Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
Pro 6:5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Pro 6:6 Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;
Pro 6:7 which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
Pro 6:8 provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.
Pro 6:9 How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?
Pro 6:10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
Pro 6:11 so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.
Pro 6:12 A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth;
Pro 6:13 who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers;
Pro 6:14 in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord.
Pro 6:15 Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.
Pro 6:16 There are six things which Yahweh hates; yes, seven which are an abomination to him:
Pro 6:17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood;
Pro 6:18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are swift in running to mischief,
Pro 6:19 a false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
Pro 6:20 My son, keep your father's commandment, and don't forsake your mother's teaching.
Pro 6:21 Bind them continually on your heart. Tie them around your neck.
Pro 6:22 When you walk, it will lead you. When you sleep, it will watch over you. When you awake, it will talk with you.
Pro 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
Pro 6:24 to keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife's tongue.
Pro 6:25 Don't lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.
Pro 6:26 For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life.
Pro 6:27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned?
Pro 6:28 Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
Pro 6:29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife. Whoever touches her will not be unpunished.
Pro 6:30 Men don't despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry:
Pro 6:31 but if he is found, he shall restore seven times. He shall give all the wealth of his house.
Pro 6:32 He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.
Pro 6:33 He will get wounds and dishonor. His reproach will not be wiped away.
Pro 6:34 For jealousy arouses the fury of the husband. He won't spare in the day of vengeance.
Pro 6:35 He won't regard any ransom, neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts.

Pro 7:1 My son, keep my words. Lay up my commandments within you.
Pro 7:2 Keep my commandments and live! Guard my teaching as the apple of your eye.
Pro 7:3 Bind them on your fingers. Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Pro 7:4 Tell wisdom, "You are my sister." Call understanding your relative,
Pro 7:5 that they may keep you from the strange woman, from the foreigner who flatters with her words.
Pro 7:6 For at the window of my house, I looked out through my lattice.
Pro 7:7 I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding,
Pro 7:8 passing through the street near her corner, he went the way to her house,
Pro 7:9 in the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the middle of the night and in the darkness.
Pro 7:10 Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent.
Pro 7:11 She is loud and defiant. Her feet don't stay in her house.
Pro 7:12 Now she is in the streets, now in the squares, and lurking at every corner.
Pro 7:13 So she caught him, and kissed him. With an impudent face she said to him:
Pro 7:14 "Sacrifices of peace offerings are with me. This day I have paid my vows.
Pro 7:15 Therefore I came out to meet you, to diligently seek your face, and I have found you.
Pro 7:16 I have spread my couch with carpets of tapestry, with striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt.
Pro 7:17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
Pro 7:18 Come, let's take our fill of loving until the morning. Let's solace ourselves with loving.
Pro 7:19 For my husband isn't at home. He has gone on a long journey.
Pro 7:20 He has taken a bag of money with him. He will come home at the full moon."
Pro 7:21 With persuasive words, she led him astray. With the flattering of her lips, she seduced him.
Pro 7:22 He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose.
Pro 7:23 Until an arrow strikes through his liver, as a bird hurries to the snare, and doesn't know that it will cost his life.
Pro 7:24 Now therefore, sons, listen to me. Pay attention to the words of my mouth.
Pro 7:25 Don't let your heart turn to her ways. Don't go astray in her paths,
Pro 7:26 for she has thrown down many wounded. Yes, all her slain are a mighty army.
Pro 7:27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

Pro 8:1 Doesn't wisdom cry out? Doesn't understanding raise her voice?
Pro 8:2 On the top of high places by the way, where the paths meet, she stands.
Pro 8:3 Beside the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entry doors, she cries aloud:
Pro 8:4 "To you men, I call! I send my voice to the sons of mankind.
Pro 8:5 You simple, understand prudence. You fools, be of an understanding heart.
Pro 8:6 Hear, for I will speak excellent things. The opening of my lips is for right things.
Pro 8:7 For my mouth speaks truth. Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
Pro 8:8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness. There is nothing crooked or perverse in them.
Pro 8:9 They are all plain to him who understands, right to those who find knowledge.
Pro 8:10 Receive my instruction rather than silver; knowledge rather than choice gold.
Pro 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies. All the things that may be desired can't be compared to it.
Pro 8:12 "I, wisdom, have made prudence my dwelling. Find out knowledge and discretion.
Pro 8:13 The fear of Yahweh is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.
Pro 8:14 Counsel and sound knowledge are mine. I have understanding and power.
Pro 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
Pro 8:16 By me princes rule; nobles, and all the righteous rulers of the earth.
Pro 8:17 I love those who love me. Those who seek me diligently will find me.
Pro 8:18 With me are riches, honor, enduring wealth, and prosperity.
Pro 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold; my yield than choice silver.
Pro 8:20 I walk in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of justice;
Pro 8:21 That I may give wealth to those who love me. I fill their treasuries.
Pro 8:22 "Yahweh possessed me in the beginning of his work, before his deeds of old.

Pro 8:25 Before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was brought forth;
Pro 8:26 while as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the beginning of the dust of the world.
Pro 8:27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he set a circle on the surface of the deep,
Pro 8:28 when he established the clouds above, when the springs of the deep became strong,
Pro 8:29 when he gave to the sea its boundary, that the waters should not violate his commandment, when he marked out the foundations of the earth;
Pro 8:30 then I was the craftsman by his side. I was a delight day by day, always rejoicing before him,
Pro 8:31 Rejoicing in his whole world. My delight was with the sons of men.
Pro 8:32 "Now therefore, my sons, listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.
Pro 8:33 Hear instruction, and be wise. Don't refuse it.
Pro 8:34 Blessed is the man who hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my door posts.
Pro 8:35 For whoever finds me, finds life, and will obtain favor from Yahweh.

Proverbs 9-11

Pro 9:1 Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars.
Pro 9:2 She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.
Pro 9:3 She has sent out her maidens. She cries from the highest places of the city:
Pro 9:4 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" As for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
Pro 9:5 "Come, eat some of my bread, Drink some of the wine which I have mixed!
Pro 9:6 Leave your simple ways, and live. Walk in the way of understanding."
Pro 9:7 He who corrects a mocker invites insult. He who reproves a wicked man invites abuse.
Pro 9:8 Don't reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you. Reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
Pro 9:9 Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
Pro 9:10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Pro 9:11 For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.
Pro 9:12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.
Pro 9:13 The foolish woman is loud, Undisciplined, and knows nothing.
Pro 9:14 She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
Pro 9:15 To call to those who pass by, who go straight on their ways,
Pro 9:16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here." as for him who is void of understanding, she says to him,
Pro 9:17 "Stolen water is sweet. Food eaten in secret is pleasant."
Pro 9:18 But he doesn't know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Pro 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
Pro 10:2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death.
Pro 10:3 Yahweh will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry, but he thrusts away the desire of the wicked.
Pro 10:4 He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand, but the hand of the diligent brings wealth.
Pro 10:5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during the harvest is a son who causes shame.
Pro 10:6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
Pro 10:7 The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.
Pro 10:8 The wise in heart accept commandments, but a chattering fool will fall.
Pro 10:9 He who walks blamelessly walks surely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.
Pro 10:10 One winking with the eye causes sorrow, but a chattering fool will fall.
Pro 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
Pro 10:12 Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs.
Pro 10:13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has discernment, but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
Pro 10:14 Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.
Pro 10:15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city. The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
Pro 10:16 The labor of the righteous leads to life. The increase of the wicked leads to sin.
Pro 10:17 He is in the way of life who heeds correction, but he who forsakes reproof leads others astray.
Pro 10:18 He who hides hatred has lying lips. He who utters a slander is a fool.
Pro 10:19 In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.
Pro 10:20 The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver. The heart of the wicked is of little worth.
Pro 10:21 The lips of the righteous feed many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding.
Pro 10:22 Yahweh's blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
Pro 10:23 It is a fool's pleasure to do wickedness, but wisdom is a man of understanding's pleasure.
Pro 10:24 What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
Pro 10:25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.
Pro 10:26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.
Pro 10:27 The fear of Yahweh prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
Pro 10:28 The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked will perish.
Pro 10:29 The way of Yahweh is a stronghold to the upright, but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.
Pro 10:30 The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
Pro 10:31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
Pro 10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

Pro 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to Yahweh, but accurate weights are his delight.
Pro 11:2 When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.
Pro 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.
Pro 11:4 Riches don't profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
Pro 11:5 The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
Pro 11:6 The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.
Pro 11:7 When a wicked man dies, hope perishes, and expectation of power comes to nothing.
Pro 11:8 A righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked takes his place.
Pro 11:9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.
Pro 11:10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. When the wicked perish, there is shouting.
Pro 11:11 By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
Pro 11:12 One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding holds his peace.
Pro 11:13 One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.
Pro 11:14 Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.
Pro 11:15 He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.
Pro 11:16 A gracious woman obtains honor, but violent men obtain riches.
Pro 11:17 The merciful man does good to his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.
Pro 11:18 Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
Pro 11:19 He who is truly righteous gets life. He who pursues evil gets death.
Pro 11:20 Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to Yahweh, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.
Pro 11:21 Most certainly, the evil man will not be unpunished, but the seed of the righteous will be delivered.
Pro 11:22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout, is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.
Pro 11:23 The desire of the righteous is only good. The expectation of the wicked is wrath.
Pro 11:24 There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty.
Pro 11:25 The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.
Pro 11:26 People curse someone who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.
Pro 11:27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but he who searches after evil, it shall come to him.
Pro 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.
Pro 11:29 He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind. The foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.
Pro 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life. He who is wise wins souls.
Pro 11:31 Behold, the righteous shall be repaid in the earth; how much more the wicked and the sinner!

Ephesians 2

Eph 2:1 You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,
Eph 2:2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;
Eph 2:3 among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Eph 2:4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us,
Eph 2:5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Eph 2:6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
Eph 2:7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;
Eph 2:8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
Eph 2:9 not of works, that no one would boast.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
Eph 2:11 Therefore remember that once you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called "uncircumcision" by that which is called "circumcision," (in the flesh, made by hands);
Eph 2:12 that you were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Christ.
Eph 2:14 For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition,
Eph 2:15 having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace;
Eph 2:16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby.
Eph 2:17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near.
Eph 2:18 For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
Eph 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,
Eph 2:20 being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;
Eph 2:21 in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord;
Eph 2:22 in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

Ephesians 3

Eph 3:1 For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,
Eph 3:2 if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you;
Eph 3:3 how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
Eph 3:4 by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ;
Eph 3:5 which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;
Eph 3:6 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,
Eph 3:7 of which I was made a servant, according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.
Eph 3:8 To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
Eph 3:9 and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ;
Eph 3:10 to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places,
Eph 3:11 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord;
Eph 3:12 in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
Eph 3:13 Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.
Eph 3:14 For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Eph 3:15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
Eph 3:16 that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man;
Eph 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
Eph 3:18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
Eph 3:19 and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Eph 3:20 Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
Eph 3:21 to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

Sing to the Lord!
“I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being” (Psalm 104:33).
God created man with the ability to sing. Singing gives words wings and expresses the deepest feelings of our heart.
Singing is the music God has prescribed for His church.
During the historical period of the New Testament and for six hundred years thereafter, singing was the only music used for worship in Christendom.
That is why “a capella”a (Italian for “as in the chapel”) is the designation in music terminology for singing without instrumental accompaniment.
It was not until 666 A.D. that Pope Vitalianus I introduced instruments in the apostate Roman church.
Not only are Christians instructed to sing, they are also told to whom they are to sing, what they are to sing, why they are to sing, and how they are to sing. Not all singing is acceptable to God.

What is singing?
To sing is to vocalize words in melodious tones with rhythmic emphasis. The melody and the rhythm enliven the words, adding depth to their meaning.

To Whom do Christians sing?

Christians sing to the Lord! 

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16); “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). Christian singing is heart-felt worship directed to God.

Worshipful singing was also directed to the Lord in the Old Testament. Many elements of Old Covenant worship (such as sacrificing animals, burning incense and playing music instruments) have no place in the spiritual worship of the New Testament. Singing, however, is a form of worship found under both covenants.
“I will praise the LORD according to His righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High” (Psalm 7:17).
“I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High” (Psalm 9:1, 2).
“Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works!” (1 Chronicles 16:9).
“Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples” (1 Chronicles 16:23, 24).

What do Christians sing?
We sing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19).
Because these terms overlap, they are often used interchangeably. Yet there is some distinction.
A hymn is a song of praise. A psalm is a poem that is sung as worship. A spiritual song is a song about a religious topic.

Why do Christians sing?
Christians sing to glorify God not to entertain man. Although Christian singing is directed to God, it also serves as a confession of faith to unbelievers, and as teaching for believers.

Christians sing to glorify God.
As already indicated in several Scriptures, we sing to worship and praise God. When we lift our voices to God in songs of praise, the spirits of others are also lifted.

Christians sing to confess their faith to the nations.
In his victory song, David says, “Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, and sing praises to Your name” (2 Samuel 22:50; see also Psalm 18:49).
Paul quotes this verse to prove that the message of the Messiah would be for all nations: “And thus the Gentiles glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, ‘Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name ” (Romans 15:9 NET).
Jesus sang songs of praise with His disciples (Matthew 26:30; Mark 14:26) and now, two thousand years later, the church of Christ is still singing praise to God as a confession of faith to the nations.

Christians sing to instruct one another.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord” (Colossians 3:16).
In a prophetic Psalm the Messiah says: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You” (Hebrews 2:12).
Followers of the Messiah also instruct their brethren in the assembly as they sing praise to God.
Christians sing on other occasions as well: “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms” (James 5:13).
At midnight, in a dark prison cell at Philippi, with feet fastened in the stocks, with backs beaten by many lashes of a whip, Paul and Silas “were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25).
Christians sing to glorify God, as a confession of faith to non-Christians, and to instruct one another.


How do Christians sing?

Paul says, “I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15).

Christians sing with the spirit.
Jesus explains that true worship must be in spirit and truth: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23, 24). Thus singing, as a form of worship, must be in spirit and truth.
Worship must come from the heart to please God. That is why Christians sing and make melody in their heart to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19); that is why they sing to the Lord with grace in their hearts (Colossians 3:16).
David understood that singing must come from the heart: “I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart” (Psalm 9:1).
God listens to the tone-quality of the heart, not the tone-quality of the voice.
Christian singing wells up from the heart and ascends in worship to God.
Someone who sings a religious song to glorify himself or to entertain man, rather than in the spirit to the Lord, is not singing in a way that pleases God.

Christians sing with understanding.
Christian singing is understandable melodious speech. It is “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19); it is “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16).
What does Paul mean by, “I will also sing with the understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15)?
The assemblies at Corinth were disorderly. People were speaking in languages no one understood, and several people spoke at the same time.

In dealing with this problem, Paul emphasizes an important principle: Public worship must be understandable and edifying.
“Unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air” (1 Corinthians 14:9). “In the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1 Corinthians 14:19). “Let all things be done for edification” (1 Corinthians 14:26).
This also applies to singing: “I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15).
Paul wanted to speak with understanding so others could be taught. Thus, to sing with understanding means to sing in such a way that people understand the words and are edified.

Sounds without meaning do not edify.
“Let all things be done for edification” (1 Corinthians 14:26). Edification is a building up, an increase in spiritual insight resulting from instruction.
Through this Scripture God excludes meaningless sounds from the Christian assembly. Sounds without meaningful content do not edify.
This explains why God omitted music instruments from Christian worship. Music instruments are neither spiritual nor intelligible, they do not give instruction.
Paul compares someone without love to music instruments: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1).
Sounding brass and clanging cymbals were used in the Old Testament (2 Chronicles 29:25, 26), but lifeless instruments are not suitable for worship in spirit and truth under the New Covenant.
God’s requirement: “Let all things be done for edification” (1 Corinthians 14:26) and the related condemnation of meaningless sounds in the assembly also preclude hand-clapping and the imitation of instruments with the voice. Such body and throat noises are not spiritual and do not have meaningful content.
Christians use the voices God has given them to sing with the spirit and with the understanding. They do not pollute their worship with sounds devoid of meaningful spiritual content.

What have we learned?
Singing is the music God has prescribed for His church. Christians are told to sing, and they have been given precise instructions. They sing to the Lord. They sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Singing serves to glorify God, as a confession of faith to non-Christians, and as instruction for believers. Christians sing with the spirit and with the understanding. What is sung must be understandable. All things must be done for edification. Meaningless sounds do not edify and are unsuitable for worship in spirit and truth.
“Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day” (Psalm 96:2). Sing to the Lord! Amen.
