The simple, elegant prayer by Gary Rose

This little cartoon says “...God has feelings to.” Interesting. How often do we think about God’s feelings? Probably not as often as we should. I understand that we live in a very busy world and with so many concerns about our daily life, it is understandable that we often have a rather large list of things to ask for. But perhaps our prayers do not have the priorities that they should. Jesus taught us how to pray...

Matthew 6 ( NASB )

9 “Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10 ‘Your kingdom come.

Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.

12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]

In short, this example of prayer teaches us to pray about

1. Honoring God ( vs.9 )

2. Following God’s will ( vs.10 )

3. Asking for the necessities of life ( vs.11 )

4. Exercising forgiveness ( vs.12 )

5. Temptation and deliverance from evil. ( vs. 13 ) [ Also, acknowledging that God is great and has power over all things ]

Notice the priorities: God and following him, then the necessities of life, followed by how we forgive ( others ) and lastly a concern for preventing evil from entering our life.

I don’t see a laundry list of things we want here, but rather relationships ( with God, man and evil ). This simple prayer of Jesus was ( is ) in contrast to the long profound prayers of the religious of Jesus’ day. When simplicity is coupled with sincerity, prayer takes on a whole new dimension; our hearts open wide and we genuinely commune with the Almighty. When this happens we give God the respect HE truly deserves.

When the only time I hear from a beloved one is when they just want something, I get a cold superficial feeling about the conversation. God wants more from us than that- HE wants LOVE!

Sept. 8

Psalms 49-51

Psa 49:1 Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,

Psa 49:2 both low and high, rich and poor together.

Psa 49:3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart shall utter understanding.

Psa 49:4 I will incline my ear to a proverb. I will open my riddle on the harp.

Psa 49:5 Why should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?

Psa 49:6 Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches--

Psa 49:7 none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.

Psa 49:8 For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough,

Psa 49:9 That he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.

Psa 49:10 For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.

Psa 49:11 Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.

Psa 49:12 But man, despite his riches, doesn't endure. He is like the animals that perish.

Psa 49:13 This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.

Psa 49:14 They are appointed as a flock for Sheol. Death shall be their shepherd. The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning. Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, far from their mansion.

Psa 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah.

Psa 49:16 Don't be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased.

Psa 49:17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away. His glory shall not descend after him.

Psa 49:18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul-- and men praise you when you do well for yourself--

Psa 49:19 he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.

Psa 49:20 A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

Psa 50:1 The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.

Psa 50:2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.

Psa 50:3 Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.

Psa 50:4 He calls to the heavens above, to the earth, that he may judge his people:

Psa 50:5 "Gather my saints together to me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice."

Psa 50:6 The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah.

Psa 50:7 "Hear, my people, and I will speak; Israel, and I will testify against you. I am God, your God.

Psa 50:8 I don't rebuke you for your sacrifices. Your burnt offerings are continually before me.

Psa 50:9 I have no need for a bull from your stall, nor male goats from your pens.

Psa 50:10 For every animal of the forest is mine, and the livestock on a thousand hills.

Psa 50:11 I know all the birds of the mountains. The wild animals of the field are mine.

Psa 50:12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Psa 50:13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

Psa 50:14 Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High.

Psa 50:15 Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

Psa 50:16 But to the wicked God says, "What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,

Psa 50:17 seeing you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

Psa 50:18 When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have participated with adulterers.

Psa 50:19 "You give your mouth to evil. Your tongue frames deceit.

Psa 50:20 You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother's son.

Psa 50:21 You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that the I was just like you. I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.

Psa 50:22 "Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be none to deliver.

Psa 50:23 Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies me, and prepares his way so that I will show God's salvation to him."

Psa 51:1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

Psa 51:2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.

Psa 51:3 For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.

Psa 51:4 Against you, and you only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight; that you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.

Psa 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity. In sin my mother conceived me.

Psa 51:6 Behold, you desire truth in the inward parts. You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

Psa 51:7 Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Psa 51:8 Let me hear joy and gladness, That the bones which you have broken may rejoice.

Psa 51:9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all of my iniquities.

Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

Psa 51:11 Don't throw me from your presence, and don't take your holy Spirit from me.

Psa 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.

Psa 51:13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways. Sinners shall be converted to you.

Psa 51:14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

Psa 51:15 Lord, open my lips. My mouth shall declare your praise.

Psa 51:16 For you don't delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it. You have no pleasure in burnt offering.

Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Psa 51:18 Do well in your good pleasure to Zion. Build the walls of Jerusalem.

Psa 51:19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, in burnt offerings and in whole burnt offerings. Then they will offer bulls on your altar.

Sept. 9

Psalms 52-54

Psa 52:1 Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man? God's loving kindness endures continually.

Psa 52:2 Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

Psa 52:3 You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah.

Psa 52:4 You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.

Psa 52:5 God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

Psa 52:6 The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying,

Psa 52:7 "Behold, this is the man who didn't make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness."

Psa 52:8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God's house. I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.

Psa 52:9 I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it. I will hope in your name, for it is good, in the presence of your saints.

Psa 53:1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity. There is no one who does good.

Psa 53:2 God looks down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there are any who understood, who seek after God.

Psa 53:3 Every one of them has gone back. They have become filthy together. There is no one who does good, no, not one.

Psa 53:4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and don't call on God?

Psa 53:5 There they were in great fear, where no fear was, for God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you. You have put them to shame, because God has rejected them.

Psa 53:6 Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When God brings back his people from captivity, then Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Psa 54:1 Save me, God, by your name. Vindicate me in your might.

Psa 54:2 Hear my prayer, God. Listen to the words of my mouth.

Psa 54:3 For strangers have risen up against me. Violent men have sought after my soul. They haven't set God before them. Selah.

Psa 54:4 Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.

Psa 54:5 He will repay the evil to my enemies. Destroy them in your truth.

Psa 54:6 With a free will offering, I will sacrifice to you. I will give thanks to your name, Yahweh, for it is good.

Psa 54:7 For he has delivered me out of all trouble. My eye has seen triumph over my enemies.

Sept. 8

1 Corinthians 4

1Co 4:1 So let a man think of us as Christ's servants, and stewards of God's mysteries.

1Co 4:2 Here, moreover, it is required of stewards, that they be found faithful.

1Co 4:3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by man's judgment. Yes, I don't judge my own self.

1Co 4:4 For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this, but he who judges me is the Lord.

1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.

1Co 4:6 Now these things, brothers, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to think beyond the things which are written, that none of you be puffed up against one another.

1Co 4:7 For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn't receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

1Co 4:8 You are already filled. You have already become rich. You have come to reign without us. Yes, and I wish that you did reign, that we also might reign with you.

1Co 4:9 For, I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last of all, like men sentenced to death. For we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men.

1Co 4:10 We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.

1Co 4:11 Even to this present hour we hunger, thirst, are naked, are beaten, and have no certain dwelling place.

1Co 4:12 We toil, working with our own hands. When people curse us, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure.

1Co 4:13 Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.

1Co 4:14 I don't write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.

1Co 4:15 For though you have ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus, I became your father through the Good News.

1Co 4:16 I beg you therefore, be imitators of me.

1Co 4:17 Because of this I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, even as I teach everywhere in every assembly.

1Co 4:18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you.

1Co 4:19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord is willing. And I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power.

1Co 4:20 For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

1Co 4:21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

Sept. 9

1 Corinthians 5

1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles, that one has his father's wife.

1Co 5:2 You are puffed up, and didn't rather mourn, that he who had done this deed might be removed from among you.

1Co 5:3 For I most certainly, as being absent in body but present in spirit, have already, as though I were present, judged him who has done this thing.

1Co 5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1Co 5:5 are to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

1Co 5:6 Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump?

1Co 5:7 Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place.

1Co 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1Co 5:9 I wrote to you in my letter to have no company with sexual sinners;

1Co 5:10 yet not at all meaning with the sexual sinners of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters; for then you would have to leave the world.

1Co 5:11 But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner. Don't even eat with such a person.

1Co 5:12 For what have I to do with also judging those who are outside? Don't you judge those who are within?

1Co 5:13 But those who are outside, God judges. "Put away the wicked man from among yourselves."

Been There

This article is written in response to an article by Clifton Inman in the September issue of Gospel Advocate. In reference to helping those who have been victims of child abuse brother Inman writes, "We desperately need help from those who have 'been there' to cause us to understand." I have "been there." I share my experiences with you in the hope that others may be helped as I have been helped.

Most abuse is not done openly. If a child does get up enough courage to talk to a teacher or other adult, generally the parent is confronted. The parent denies any abuse and makes some excuse that the child is just trying to get attention or that he is misrepresenting the facts to achieve his own ends. Generally it is the adult who is believed. The child may then be called on the carpet by the very one from whom he has sought help--and the abuse at home gets even worse. And since his abuse has been denied, he thinks it is the same in all homes. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Now the child sees no way to turn. He struggles alone to survive in any way he can. He may become withdrawn. He may become belligerent. He may behave in socially unacceptable ways. He is still a child. He thinks as a child. he cannot see where his thoughts and actions will eventually lead him. And most tragically, he can see no end to his situation. When you are seven, eighteen seems like a trillion years away!

Each situation is different, and each individual is different and responds differently. I "survived" by building a wall around myself and not letting anyone get close to me. And it seemed that every time I did soften some and let my barriers down, I got hurt.

Yes, I eventually married. My husband even became a denominational preacher. By then I was trying to the best of my knowledge and ability to serve our Lord. I tried desperately to lay aside the past as taught in Philippians 3:13-14. My husband tried to help. When I failed he thought I simply was not trying hard enough, that I did not love him enough to try, and that I did not have enough faith in God. I found myself hurting even worse--and still no way out. By the time my husband died I had lost all confidence in myself and in my fellow man. I trusted no one.

A few weeks later I became acquainted with brother T. Pierce Brown. He taught me the truth and baptized me properly. I had no confidence in him as a man. I simply believed the scriptures he pointed out.

Brother Brown knew nothing of my past. He saw a grieving widow who was created in the image and likeness of his Lord and who needed comfort. That was a new concept to me. I was supposed to comfort others, but it never occurred to me that anyone would want to comfort me!

Some time later, sitting in a darkened room on the verge of suicide, thinking no one cared anyway, I remembered that brother Brown did care. And I realized within myself that if I ever came that close to suicide again I would go through with it. I knew I had to have help from others. I dreaded the stern lecture which I knew would follow, but I told brother Brown what had happened. Instead of a lecture I received compassion! And he emphasized the positive point that I had NOT gone through with it. Do you note the difference?

He taught me that I was a victim, not the cause, of the abuse. He taught me that I was created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), with the privileges and responsibilities thereof. The idea of having any privileges was a new concept to me! He began to build up my self-esteem. Any effort I put forth, no matter how insignificant the results, was accepted. No matter how hard I had tried to please my parents or my husband nothing I did was ever acceptable. Brother Brown seemed to take joy in anything I did. And he began to teach me new ways of looking at things and new ways of coping with problems.

Gradually he won my trust. But before I could trust anyone fully, I had to prove their love. Subconsciously I would do things that I thought would disappoint him. When I did that which was contrary to scripture he would firmly, but gently, correct me. When I did that which disappointed him personally, he never lectured me nor told me how much he had done for me nor how much I had disappointed him. Instead, he distinguished between the person and the action. Yes, my action had disappointed him. But he was not disappointed in ME. That is an extremely important point to remember when helping others.

After I had learned to trust brother Brown I began to extend that trust to others. I asked for and received the help of my elders. They took the same positive approach. They never lectured nor condemned me. Yes, I had to prove their love in the same way as I had brother Brown's. But always they expressed their love, understanding, and compassion.

Surprisingly, those who have been in the front line during combat seem best able to relate to my experiences. I still have "flashbacks" from time to time. A Viet Nam vet recognized what was happening to me and taught me how to cope with them. He assures me that in time they will abate.

A child who is abused is constantly under fire. Sometimes it is "enemy" fire. Some children may be caught in the crossfire of their parents. But mostly they are fired on by those whom they most love. There is little, if any, shelter. There is no place to hide. He may try to blend in with the furniture so he will not be noticed. But always the shells find him. All he can do is dig in and wait for the battle to cease. A trillion years is a long time to wait.

Long after the battle is over, the trauma will remain. You can help with your love, understanding, and compassion. No, you DO NOT know the pain a victim of child abuse experiences. But you have felt pain. You DO NOT know the sense of betrayal he feels. But you have had a friend let you down. YES, YOU CAN HELP.

If you were abused as a child, help is available. Seek out any elder or minister in the church of our Lord. If they cannot help you themselves, they will assist you in obtaining help. BUT IT IS YOU WHO MUST WANT THAT HELP.

WHY WAS THE NEW TESTAMENT WRITTEN? by steve finnell

WHY WAS THE NEW TESTAMENT WRITTEN?  by steve finnell

The New Testament was written so men would believe that Jesus is the Christ.

John 20:24-31...31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God; and that believing you may have life in His name.(NASB)

Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteous; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (NASB)

If the Bible, that comes from God the Father, teaches men how to become saved and live the Christian life, then, why do men use man-made, creed books and the extra-Biblical writings  of theologians, preachers, priests, and others as their guide for faith, practice and teaching others?

Would not wisdom dictate that using the Bible and the Bible alone would be the way to find the absolute truth?

So-called new revelation and opinions of men are not the avenues to God's absolute truth!

Respecting Authority by Ken Weliever, The Preacherman

Respecting Authority

It doesn’t appear that the vitriol toward our newly elected President is going to disappear anytime soon.

In his latest music video Snoop Dogg literally takes aim at President Trump with a gun pointed at a clown dressed like the President. The rapper listed many of his grievances with the President including his travel ban, “people being in jail for weed” and of course, just winning the Presidency itself.

USA Today reported that “according to Snoop, his focus on the track was “making a song that was not controversial but real — real to the voice of the people who don’t have a voice.”

Hmm? Really?

By the way, I saw some of the video with my sound turned off because there was a warning of “explicit language.”

I’m not sure when it became socially acceptable to demonstrate such disrespectful disdain against our elected leaders. There were many unkind and ugly epitaphs hurled toward President Obama. And, of course, George W. Bush was the subject of some pretty vicious taunts.

I suppose one could argue that Mr. Trump has engaged in his share of rude and crude language and thus deserves whatever criticism he receives no matter how harsh and hateful.

One could argue that, but they would be wrong.

In our Bible reading this week at West Main there is a passage that caught my attention. It’s during the time when David is on the run from King Saul. Following David’s defeat of Goliath, Saul developed a bitter jealousy toward David. At least twice David escaped Saul’s attempt to kill him with a spear. Later Saul tried to influence both his son, Jonathan, and his servants to kill David. Finally, Saul’s out of control fury reached a point where David had to flee into the wilderness.

In 1 Samuel 24 Saul comes into a cave where David is hiding, but doesn’t know David is there. David sneaks close enough to cut off the edge of Saul’s garment, but then felt bad for doing this. He then turned to his soldiers and said: “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.” So David restrained his servants with these words, and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave and went on his way.”

Several times in the ensuing chapters David speaks of Saul as “the Lord’s anointed.” Although Saul was irrational and sought to harm him, David would not retaliate against the King. He respected the office that God ordained.

We could learn a valuable lesson from David’s attitude. While some people in positions of power may not conduct themselves worthy of their rank, they do deserve to be accorded the honor of that office.

During the days of immoral and ungodly Roman Emperors the Bible says
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God” (Rom 13:1). Furthermore, we are exhorted to “pray for those in authority” (1 Tim. 2:2) and to “honor the king” (1 Pet 2:17)

For those who may think ThePreachersWord has a political agenda, we sounded the same concerns during the President Obama’s tenure. The Bible commands are not politically motivated. Nor should we interpret them in a partisan manner.

Respect. Honor. Decency. Good manners. And graciousness. These qualities never go out of style. Nor should they be discarded when we disagree with others. Even and especially our elected leaders.

"THE GOSPEL OF JOHN" That The World May Believe (17:20-23)

"THE GOSPEL OF JOHN"

That The World May Believe (17:20-23)

INTRODUCTION
  1. Shortly before His betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion, Jesus prayed to His Father...
    1. For Himself - Jn 17:1-5
    2. For His apostles - Jn 17:6-19
    3. For all His future believers - Jn 17:20-26
  2. His prayer is truly remarkable...
    1. It has been called "The Lord's High Priestly Prayer"
    2. It is truly "The Lord's Prayer", a title normally given to the sample prayer found in Mt 6:9-13; Lk 11:2-4
  3. We learn what weighed heavily on our Lord's mind, knowing that "the hour has come"...
    1. He sought to be glorified by His Father
    2. He was concerned for the well-being of His disciples
    3. He wanted His followers to be one, even as He and the Father were one - Jn 17:20-23
  4. It is our Lord's concern for unity that I want us to examine in this study...
    1. Why was unity so important to Jesus?
    2. What has Jesus done that it might be accomplished?
    3. In our religiously divided world today, how can we maintain unity among those who believe in Jesus?

[As we look closer at our text (Jn 17:20-23), we are immediately impressed with...]

  1. THE IMPORTANCE OF UNITY
    1. "THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE" - Jn 17:21
      1. Without unity, it is difficult to persuade unbelievers that Jesus came from God
        1. Those in the world care little about doctrine and theological distinctions
        2. But in a world with racial, ethnic and cultural divisions, unity can capture their attention!
      2. This is not to say that doctrine is not important!
        1. Jesus had already emphasized the importance of abiding in His word - Jn 8:31
        2. But the proclamation of truth must be accompanied by unity
      3. When we are united in Christ, it gives credence to our claims
        1. That Jesus was sent from God
        2. That as the Son of God who rose from the dead...
          1. He lives in our hearts
          2. He has transformed our lives by the power of His resurrected life!
-- Which is why some have referred to unity as "The Final Apologetic" (Schaeffer)
    2. "THAT THE WORLD MAY KNOW" - Jn 17:23
      1. Jesus again emphasizes the power of unity among His disciples to convince an unbelieving world!
      2. Not only that they may know God sent Jesus...
        1. But that God has also loved them! - Jn 3:16; 1Jn 4:9-10
        2. Indeed, even as God loves His only begotten Son ("as You have loved Me")!
      3. What a powerful message we have to share with the world!
        1. God loves them even as He loves His Son!
        2. But to convince the world of such love, unity among disciples is imperative!

[In light of Jesus' prayer for unity, no true disciple can be content with religious division as it exists today (cf. 1Co 1:10). Paramount in our discipleship should be efforts to eliminate any kind of religious division that is contrary to the will of Christ!

But how can we be one, even as the Father and the Son are one? Here are some thoughts on...]

  2. THE ATTAINMENT OF UNITY
    1. JESUS HAS PROVIDED "GLORY" FOR US TO BE ONE...
      1. "Glory" which He had received from the Father - Jn 17:22
        1. Which He had given to His disciples
        2. Which enabled them to be one just as He and the Father were one!
      2. What is this "glory" to which Jesus refers?
        1. It may involve the idea of Jesus abiding in us
          1. I.e., the glory of Jesus abiding in us even as the Father abides in the Son
          2. Through such abiding, we may be made perfect in one - Jn 17:23
        2. Certainly without abiding in Jesus, we can do nothing - cf. Jn 15:4-5

[Whatever the "glory" refers to, we should note that true unity comes from Jesus Himself; with this in mind, note the following...]

    2. JESUS ATTAINED UNITY THROUGH HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS...
      1. As Paul expounded in Ep 2:14-16
        1. The division between Jew and Gentile ended at the cross
        2. Jesus died to make it possible for us to be one body! - Ep 4:4
      2. When we come to Christ through obedience to His gospel, we are united with all believers in His one body!
        1. We are baptized into one body - 1Co 12:13
        2. Thus we begin the Christian life united with all believers in Christ!

[When it comes to "attaining" unity, Jesus accomplished the unity for which He prayed! Our challenge is "maintaining" this unity if we wish to honor Jesus' prayer...]

  3. THE MAINTENANCE OF UNITY
    1. REQUIRES THAT WE OBEY THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST...
      1. Unity is impossible without adherence to the same standard
        1. Unless there were standards regarding weights and measures, confusion and division would result every time we went to the store
        2. Religious division occurs because people accept different standards of authority
          1. Some accept the authority of a pope, presbytery, prophet, or preacher
          2. We cannot maintain the unity for which Jesus died unless we can agree on the same standard
      2. For Christians our standard of authority must be that which...
        1. Originated from Christ - cf. Jn 8:31; Mt 28:18
        2. Was delegated to His apostles - cf. Jn 13:20; Mt 28:20; Ac 2:42
        3. Was proclaimed and written by His apostles - cf. 1Th 2:13; 1Co 14:37
      3. Taught by His apostles, we must be careful to...
        1. Observe ALL that He has commanded - Mt 28:20
        2. Not allow traditions of men to make void the commandments of God - Mt 15:3-6
        3. Not teach as doctrine the commandments of (uninspired) men - Mt 15:9
-- The "apostles' doctrine" (i.e., the New Testament) must be our standard of authority, even as Jesus acknowledged when He prayed "for those who will believe in Me through their word" (i.e., the apostles' teaching) - Jn 17:20
    2. REQUIRES THAT WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST...
      1. As Paul instructed the Philippians - Php 2:2-5
        1. There is no place for selfish ambition or conceit
        2. We must esteem others highly, and look out for their interests
      2. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians - Ep 4:1-3
        1. We must manifest lowliness, gentleness, longsuffering, forbearance in love
        2. With such diligence, we "keep" (maintain) the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace
-- Without this "mind" of Christ, we will misuse the word of God and destroy the unity Jesus attained through His death on the cross!

[With His doctrine before us, His mind in us, we can maintain the unity Jesus attained. With lives transformed by His teachings and His attitude, we provide visible proof to the world that Jesus did come from God and that the Father loves them also.

Finally, some thoughts about a providing a "visible" unity ("That The World May Know")...]

  4. THE DEMONSTRATION OF UNITY
    1. MUST BE MANIFESTED IN THE LOCAL CHURCH...
      1. It is in the context of the local congregation that unity will be most evident
        1. For that is where interaction of Christians most often occurs
        2. Note that the warnings against division were often addressed in the context of the local church - e.g., 1Co 1:10-13; 3:3-4; 11:18
      2. Therefore unity truly begins "at home"
        1. We may rightly deplore the religious division elsewhere
        2. But our first concern must be preserving unity in our own congregation!
        3. How sad when those who condemn religious division in the denominations can't even preserve unity in their own congregation!
    2. PRECLUDES ORGANIZATION ABOVE THE LOCAL CHURCH...
      1. In the New Testament, each congregation was self-governing and independent
        1. Governed by a plurality of elders (bishops, pastors) whose authority was limited to the flock of God among them - cf. Ac 14:23; 20:28; 1Pe 5:1-2
        2. There was no authority above the local congregation other than that of Christ and His apostles
      2. It was only after the apostles died that things soon changed
        1. "During the second century A.D. churches came to have a single bishop, and then that bishop came to exercise oversight over nearby rural churches as well as the city church so that his ecclesiastical territory became known as a "diocese" or "see" ("eparchy" in the East). Bishops of churches that had been founded by apostles were said to be in succession to the apostles, and hence their teaching was held to be authentic and their authority collegial. By 400 A.D. in the West, the bishop of Rome began to assume extraordinary authority above other bishops." (Holman Bible Dictionary)
        2. "Ignatius shows that in the early second century the office of bishop over the elders had developed, but Lightfoot has shown that it was not so in the first century." (Word Pictures, A. T. Robinson)
      3. Such changes were not only unscriptural, but set the stage for denominational division
        1. Churches were expected to line up under one bishop, patriarch, or council
        2. Rather than let the Lord Himself judge each church (cf. Re 2-3), religious hierarchies began determining which churches were faithful
        3. This has led to the denominational division so rampant today, and which presents a religiously divided picture to the world!
-- As long as the denominational practice of organizing churches under some hierarchy above the local church continues, religious division will remain!
CONCLUSION
  1. No true disciple of Jesus should treat religious division with nonchalance...
    1. It is contrary to our Lord's prayer for unity - Jn 17:20-23
    2. It is condemned by Paul as a manifestation of carnality - 1Co 3:3-4
  2. Unity among disciples of Christ must be a primary concern, for Jesus...
    1. Died on the cross to attain unity
    2. Believed it to be "The Final Apologetic" to convince the world that He came from God
  3. Since Jesus attained unity through His death, our task is to maintain it by...
    1. Following the doctrine of Christ as communicated through His apostles
    2. Displaying the mind of Christ as we interact with one another in our local churches
    3. Honoring the New Testament pattern of church organization, which is designed to slow the growth of religious division whenever it occurs

It is not always possible to avoid religious division (cf. 1Co 11:19), but may we do all we can to preserve the unity we enjoy in Christ!
