From Gary... Prophecy, a bottle-tree and a best friend

Yesterday, after doing my daily post, I showed Elizabeth (one of my granddaughters) the post and with it the embedded video's.  She had never seen O BROTHER, where art thou? So, after some rummaging  I finally found the DVD and we watched all of it.  Odd, but funny movie.  I remember that it had in it a fulfilled prophecy of the three sojourners seeing a cow, perched on a corn-crib and thought: how strange!!!  But, life is chock-full of surprises and yesterday was no exception.  Towards evening, Lizzie and I went for a walk with our cameras.  As we left the development and started walking on Wilds road, we saw the first picture- I had never seen one of these before, but to Lizzie, it was "no big deal".  Then we continued our stroll to the neighboring park and took many pictures (some ordinary and others- no-so-much).  On the beginning of our return home, we met some friends. .  Merlin is from Vermont and a very, very friendly person. And he had his friendly little dog Elvis with him as well.  You see, Elvis is a friend of "our dog" Buddy.  Most of the time, Buddy is extremely aggressive towards other canines, regardless of size.  But with Elvis, he acts as friendly as he does with the human masters that he thinks he owns.  I wonder how Buddy really thinks about Elvis as a friend- because it is obvious that Elvis is his BEST FRIEND!!!  If you were to ask me who my best friend is (besides my wife of course), I would tell you that it is Jesus.  But friendship is a reciprocal thing, with give and take on both sides.  The following verse explains what I mean...

John, Chapter 15
 12  “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.   13  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.   14  You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

Love, brotherly love, is a wonderful thing.  My elder brother Jesus wants me to love, really love- Not only God, but others who love God as well.  Easy most of the time, but a at others- one very tall order!!!  Yet, Jesus didn't just talk the talk- he died a miserable, humiliating,  painful death to prove that love.  And when we see him at last, it won't be some odd-ball thing like a bottle tree, but rather the sight of an old friend who knows that we care about HIM too!!!  Can't wait!!!  Humm, I wonder if there will be cameras in heaven???

From Mark Copeland... The Value Of A Soul

                          "THE GOSPEL OF MARK"

                     The Value Of A Soul (8:36-37)

INTRODUCTION

1. After telling His disciples and others nearby the cost of being His
   disciple, Jesus asked...

   "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and
   loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his
   soul?" - Mk 8:36-37

2. With these words of Jesus we are reminded of the value of the soul...
   a. It is the most valuable possession one has
   b. All earthly possessions, position, pleasure, and power are not
      worth the value of one's soul!

[But perhaps some might wonder...]

I. WHY IS THE SOUL OF MAN SO VALUABLE?

   A. IT IS MADE IN GOD'S IMAGE...
      1. Man was created in the image of God - Gen 1:26-27
         a. Yet God does not have a physical body like ours - cf.
            Jn 4:24; Lk 24:39
         b. Therefore it must be our soul, or spirit, that is in God's
            image
      2. This is what enable us to comprehend abstract concepts as:
         a. Life, death, eternity
         b. Things of beauty
         c. A moral sense of ought, right and wrong, good and evil
      3. Making us more than just animal creatures - cf. Ps 8:3-8

   B. IT IS THAT OVER WHICH WE HAVE MUCH CONTROL...
      1. The body is mostly the result of genetics
         a. We might be able to change a little through exercise,
            plastic surgery, etc.
         b. But we cannot stop the eventual aging and dying process
      2. The soul, however, is different...
         a. Despite one's genetics, there is much that can be changed
         b. With God's help, we can change attitudes, character -
            Ro 12:1-2; Col 3:12-15

   C. IT DOES NOT CEASE TO EXIST AT DEATH...
      1. The body dies, and soon returns back to the dust
         a. The soul, or spirit, returns back to God - Ec 12:7
         b. Awaiting the resurrection of the body - cf. 1Co 15:35-58
      2. After which comes the Judgment - He 9:27; 2Co 5:10
         a. The soul, in its resurrected body, will bear the brunt of
            that Judgment
         b. Either eternal life, honor, glory, and immortality - Ro 2:7
         c. Or indignation, wrath, tribulation, and anguish - Ro 2:8-9
      3. Which is why we need to evaluate all things (possessions,
         decisions, actions) from an eternal perspective, from the
         soul's viewpoint - Mt 10:28; 16:26

   D. IT REQUIRES A GREAT COST TO REDEEM IT...
      1. What price is required to redeem our souls from the wrath of
         God's judgment?
      2. Nothing less than the blood of the Son of God! - 1Pe 1:18-19
      3. Even if we cannot fully comprehend why Jesus had to die, we
         should able to see that the souls of men must be extremely
         valuable if His death was necessary

[So the Bible teaches that the soul is more valuable than the whole
world! And yet, many "sell their souls" for what surely are petty
bargains.  For example, consider...]

II. WHAT WILL ONE GIVE IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS SOUL?

   A. FOR SOME IT IS EARTHLY RICHES AND FAME...
      1. In their quest for riches, they neglect their service to God
         - 1Ti 6:10
      2. Yet they've traded their souls for what is corruptible and can
         be stolen - Mt 6:19-21

   B. FOR OTHERS IT IS THE PASSING PLEASURES OF SIN...
      1. Like the young man tempted by the harlot - Pr 5:1-14
         a. In a moment's passion, lives are destroyed (AIDS, unwanted
            pregnancies)
         b. Marriages and families are ruined
      2. Young people in the Bible should inspire us to make the right
         choices
         a. Like Joseph - Gen 39:7-9
         b. Like Moses - He 11:24-25
         c. Like Daniel - Dan 1:8

   C. FOR OTHERS IT IS CONVENIENT FALSE DOCTRINES...
      1. Of which we need to beware - Col 2:8,18
      2. For the devil is a master at this - 2Co 11:13-15
      3. Through lack of Bible study, we can lose the most valuable
         thing we have! - Hos 4:6

   D. FOR MANY IT IS SIMPLE NEGLECT...
      1. They will not use the opportunities the Lord has given them
         - cf. Mt 25:24-30
      2. They fail to apply the diligence necessary to grow spiritually
         - cf. 2Pe 1:5-11

CONCLUSION

1. How valuable is your soul...?
   a. Think of what the rich man in Hades would tell you - cf. Lk 16:22-24
   b. Think of what the souls of the redeemed would say to you - cf. Re 7:13-17
   c. Think of what Jesus and God have done to save your soul! - cf. Jn 3:16

2. Dear friends and brethren, you don't have to lose your soul...!
   a. Humbly submit yourself to the will of God
   b. Let His Word guide you, let no man beguile you of your reward
   c. Overcome temptations, and suffer for His cause with rejoicing

Implied in all these words is that there will be the Day of Judgment (Ac
17:30-31), with possible consequences terrible beyond comprehension (Re
20:11-15; 21:8).

Are you willing to risk losing your soul...?

From Jim McGuiggan... Are You Talking to Me?

Are You Talking to Me?

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16) I wonder how startling that was when he first taught them that during his eighteen months stay with them? Up on the hill, the Acro-Corinthus, was the famous temple of Aphrodite. There was a time, said Strabo, when it had 5,000 sacred prostitutes working for it and the money poured into the temple coffers. Fifty-six miles away a huge bronze statue of Athena dominated Athens as Aphrodite dominated Corinth. Athena was the goddess of the mind and Aphrodite the goddess of the body (and other things). Both cities obeyed their deities and Athens left us a long line of thinkers and statesmen while Corinth left us a word for venereal disease ("the Corinthian sickness") and a word meaning "to go to hell"--Corinthianize.
So the Corinthians knew what a temple was and they patronised the one on their hill in sufficient numbers that Paul had to chastise them about it later. In the meantime he tells these shopkeepers, water vendors, saddle and tent makers, slaves and mercenaries (see 1 Corinthians 1:26), "you are God's temple."
Amazing doctrine and all the harder to swallow when you think of how the ancient world looked on the lower classes (and I'm not suggesting much has changed in many parts of the world). We're told there were more than 60 millions slaves in the Roman Empire where manhood was cheap, easily bought and just as easily sold. The haggling over price, the very sound of it speaks its horror, "I'll buy him. No chance of fifty, here's thirty-five pieces of silver, he's not worth even that much." Temples were often swept, polished, guarded, respected and decorated with the finest art and most luxurious hangings while the masses were left to grope in the dark, corrupted and corrupting, humiliated, abused and abusive.
Into all this came an itinerant Jew with a message saying that God had come into the world as an ordinary man from peasant stock. Then he said this astonishing thing, "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16) I know we're too familiar with that statement but take a moment just to mull it over. The Spirit of the Lord Almighty dwelled in them. Should that make us look at our little congregation differently? Look around and quote Paul under your breath as you do it. Is this not the foundation for a new way of seeing humans? I wonder if any of those Corinthians went home and got down the polished metal mirror and looked into it for a long time?

Joshua 11, 12

Jos 11:1 It happened, when Jabin king of Hazor heard of it, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,
Jos 11:2 and to the kings who were on the north, in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,
Jos 11:3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
Jos 11:4 They went out, they and all their armies with them, many people, even as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots.
Jos 11:5 All these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.
Jos 11:6 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don't be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."
Jos 11:7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them.
Jos 11:8 Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them, and chased them to great Sidon, and to Misrephoth Maim, and to the valley of Mizpeh eastward. They struck them until they left them none remaining.
Jos 11:9 Joshua did to them as Yahweh told him. He hamstrung their horses and burnt their chariots with fire.
Jos 11:10 Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword: for Hazor used to be the head of all those kingdoms.
Jos 11:11 They struck all the souls who were in it with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them. There was no one left who breathed. He burnt Hazor with fire.
Jos 11:12 Joshua captured all the cities of those kings, with their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded.
Jos 11:13 But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only. Joshua burned that.
Jos 11:14 The children of Israel took all the spoil of these cities, with the livestock, as spoils for themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They didn't leave any who breathed.
Jos 11:15 As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone of all that Yahweh commanded Moses.
Jos 11:16 So Joshua captured all that land, the hill country, all the South, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, the Arabah, the hill country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;
Jos 11:17 from Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir, even to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon under Mount Hermon. He took all their kings, struck them, and put them to death.
Jos 11:18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Jos 11:19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took all in battle.
Jos 11:20 For it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
Jos 11:21 Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.
Jos 11:22 There were none of the Anakim left in the land of the children of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, did some remain.
Jos 11:23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Yahweh spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.
Jos 12:1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Israel struck, and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah eastward:
Jos 12:2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the middle of the valley, and half Gilead, even to the river Jabbok, the border of the children of Ammon;
Jos 12:3 and the Arabah to the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and to the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth Jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah:
Jos 12:4 and the border of Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Rephaim, who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
Jos 12:5 and ruled in Mount Hermon, and in Salecah, and in all Bashan, to the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.
Jos 12:6 Moses the servant of Yahweh and the children of Israel struck them. Moses the servant of Yahweh gave it for a possession to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Jos 12:7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel struck beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon even to Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir. Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
Jos 12:8 in the hill country, and in the lowland, and in the Arabah, and in the slopes, and in the wilderness, and in the South; the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
Jos 12:9 the king of Jericho, one; the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;
Jos 12:10 the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;
Jos 12:11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;
Jos 12:12 the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;
Jos 12:13 the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;
Jos 12:14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one;
Jos 12:15 the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;
Jos 12:16 the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;
Jos 12:17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;
Jos 12:18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lassharon, one;
Jos 12:19 the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;
Jos 12:20 the king of Shimron Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;
Jos 12:21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;
Jos 12:22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;
Jos 12:23 the king of Dor in the height of Dor, one; the king of Goiim in Gilgal, one;
Jos 12:24 the king of Tirzah, one: all the kings thirty-one.

Joshua 11 4
They went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
And they went out, they and all their armies with them, a people numerous as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
and they go out, they and all their camps with them, a people numerous, as the sand which [is] on the sea-shore for multitude, and horse and charioteer very many;
Joshua 11 5
All these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.
And all these kings met together, and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
and all these kings are met together, and they come and encamp together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.
Joshua 11 6
Yahweh said to Joshua, Don`t be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: you shall hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
And Jehovah said to Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow about this time will I give them all up slain before Israel: their horses shalt thou hough, and thou shalt burn their chariots with fire.
And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, `Be not afraid of their presence, for to-morrow about this time I am giving all of them wounded before Israel; their horses thou dost hough, and their chariots burn with fire.`
Joshua 11 7
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them.

Joshua 11 8
Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them, and chased them to great Sidon, and to Misrephoth-maim, and to the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they struck them, until they left them none remaining.
And Jehovah delivered them into the hand of Israel, and they smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and to Misrephoth-maim, and to the valley of Mizpah eastward, and smote them until none were left remaining to them.
and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Israel, and they smite them and pursue them unto the great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-Maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward, and they smite them, till he hath not left to them a remnant;
Joshua 11 9
Joshua did to them as Yahweh bade him: he hamstrung their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
And Joshua did to them as Jehovah had said to him: he houghed their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.
and Joshua doth to them as Jehovah said to him; their horses he hath houghed, and their chariots burnt with fire.
Joshua 11 10
Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck the king of it with the sword: for Hazor before was the head of all those kingdoms.
And Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword; for Hazor was in times past the head of all those kingdoms.
And Joshua turneth back at that time, and captureth Hazor, and its king he hath smitten by the sword; for Hazor formerly [is] head of all these kingdoms;
Joshua 11 11
They struck all the souls who were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left who breathed: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, destroying them utterly: there was not any left to breathe; and he burned Hazor with fire.
and they smite every person who [is] in it by the mouth of the sword; he hath devoted -- he hath not left any one breathing, and Hazor he hath burnt with fire;
Joshua 11 12
All the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded.
And all the cities of those kings and all their kings did Joshua take; and he smote them with the edge of the sword, destroying them utterly, as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded.
and all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, hath Joshua captured, and he smiteth them by the mouth of the sword; he devoted them, as Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded.
Joshua 11 13
But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
Only, all the cities that stood still upon their hills Israel did not burn, save Hazor alone, [which] Joshua burned.
Only, all the cities which are standing by their hill, Israel hath not burned them, save Hazor only, [it] hath Joshua burnt;
Joshua 11 14
All the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey to themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any who breathed.
And all the spoil of these cities and the cattle the children of Israel took as prey to themselves; only, they smote all the men with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them: they left none that breathed.
and all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, have the sons of Israel spoiled for themselves; only, every human being they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, till their destroying them; they have not left any one breathing.
Joshua 11 15
As Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua: and so did Joshua; he   left nothing undone of all that Yahweh commanded Moses.
As Jehovah had commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua: he let nothing fail of all that Jehovah had commanded Moses.
As Jehovah commanded Moses His servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so hath Joshua done; he hath not turned aside a thing of all that Jehovah commanded Moses.
Joshua 11 16
So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the Arabah, and the hill-country of Israel, and the lowland of the same;
And Joshua took all that land, the mountain and all the south, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and its lowland;
And Joshua taketh all this land: the hill-country, and all the south, and all the land of Goshen, and the low country, and the plain, even the hill-country of Israel and its low lands,
Joshua 11 17
from Mount Halak, that goes up to Seir, even to Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under Mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and struck them, and put them to death.
from the smooth mountain, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-Gad in the valley of Lebanon, at the foot of mount Hermon; and he took all their kings, and smote them, and put them to death.
from the mount of Halak, which is going up [to] Seir, and unto Baal-Gad, in the valley of Lebanon, under mount Hermon; and all their kings he hath captured, and he smiteth them, and putteth them to death.
Joshua 11 18
Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
Many days hath Joshua made with all these kings war;
Joshua 11 19
There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: they took all in battle.
There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites who dwelt at Gibeon; they took all in battle.
there hath not been a city which made peace with the sons of Israel save the Hivite, inhabitants of Gibeon; the whole they have taken in battle;
Joshua 11 20
For it was of Yahweh to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
For it was of Jehovah that their heart was hardened, to meet Israel in battle, that they might be utterly destroyed, and that there might be no favour shewn to them, but that they might be destroyed, as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
for from Jehovah it hath been to strengthen their heart, to meet in battle with Israel, in order to devote them, so that they have no grace, but in order to destroy them, as Jehovah commanded Moses.
Joshua 11 21
Joshua came at that time, and cut off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel: Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.
And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountain of Judah, and from all the mountain of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly, with their cities.
