Deuteronomy 21 1
If one be found slain in the land which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it, lying in the field, and it isn`t known who has struck him;
If one be found slain in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess, lying in the field, [and] it be not known who hath smitten him,
`When one is found slain on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee to possess it -- fallen in a field -- it is not known who hath smitten him,

Deuteronomy 21 2
then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure to the cities which are round about him who is slain:
then thine elders and thy judges shall go forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain;
then have thine elders and thy judges gone out and measured unto the cities which [are] round about the slain one,

Deuteronomy 21 3
and it shall be, that the city which is nearest to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd, which hasn`t been worked with, and which has not drawn in the yoke;
and the city that is nearest unto him that is slain, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer that hath not been wrought with, that hath not drawn in the yoke; 
and it hath been, the city which [is] near unto the slain one, even the elders of that city have taken a heifer of the herd, which hath not been wrought with, which hath not drawn in the yoke,

Deuteronomy 21 4
and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer`s neck there in the valley.
and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto an ever-flowing watercourse, which is not tilled, nor is it sown, and shall break the heifer`s neck there in the watercourse;
and the elders of that city have brought down the heifer unto a hard valley, which is not tilled nor sown, and have beheaded there the heifer in the valley.

Deuteronomy 21 5
The priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them Yahweh your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of Yahweh; and according to their word shall every controversy and every stroke be.
and the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them Jehovah thy God hath chosen to do service unto him, and to bless in the name of Jehovah; and according to their word shall be every controversy and every stroke.
`And the priests, sons of Levi, have come nigh -- for on them hath Jehovah thy God fixed to serve Him, and to bless in the name of Jehovah, and by their mouth is every strife, and every stroke --

Deuteronomy 21 6
All the elders of that city, who are nearest to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley;
And all the elders of that city, that are nearest unto him that is slain, shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck is broken in the watercourse,
and all the elders of that city, who are near unto the slain one, do wash their hands over the heifer which is beheaded in the valley,

Deuteronomy 21 7
and they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.
and shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.
and they have answered and said, Our hands have not shed this blood, and our eyes have not seen --

Deuteronomy 21 8
Forgive, Yahweh, your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and don`t allow innocent blood [to remain] in the midst of your people Israel. The blood shall be forgiven them.
Forgive thy people Israel, whom thou, Jehovah, hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood to the charge of thy people Israel; and the blood shall be expiated for them.
receive atonement for Thy people Israel, whom Thou hast ransomed, O Jehovah, and suffer not innocent blood in the midst of Thy people Israel; and the blood hath been pardoned to them,

Deuteronomy 21 9
So shall you put away the innocent blood from the midst of you, when you shall do that which is right in the eyes of Yahweh.
So shalt thou put away innocent blood from thy midst, when thou shalt do what is right in the eyes of Jehovah.
and thou dost put away the innocent blood out of thy midst, for thou dost that which [is] right in the eyes of Jehovah.

Deuteronomy 21 10
When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and Yahweh your God delivers them into your hands, and you carry them away captive,
When thou goest forth to war against thine enemies, and Jehovah thy God delivereth them into thy hands, and thou hast taken captives of them,
`When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and Jehovah thy God hath given them into thy hand, and thou hast taken captive its captivity,

Deuteronomy 21 11
and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you have a desire to her, and would take her to you as wife;
and thou seest among the captives a woman of beautiful form, and hast a desire unto her, and takest her as thy wife;
and hast seen in the captivity a woman of fair form, and hast delighted in her, and hast taken to thee for a wife,

Deuteronomy 21 12
then you shall bring her home to your house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;
then thou shalt bring her home to thy house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;
then thou hast brought her in unto the midst of thy household, and she hath shaved her head, and prepared her nails,

Deuteronomy 21 13
and she shall put the clothing of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in your house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that you shall go in to her, and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.
and she shall put the clothes of her captivity from off her, and shall abide in thy house, and bewail her father and mother a full month, and afterwards thou mayest go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.
and turned aside the raiment of her captivity from off her, and hath dwelt in thy house, and bewailed her father and her mother a month of days, and afterwards thou dost go in unto her and hast married her, and she hath been to thee for a wife:

Deuteronomy 21 14
It shall be, if you have no delight in her, then you shall let her go where she will; but you shall not sell her at all for money, you shall not deal with her as a slave, because you have humbled her.
And it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go according to her desire; but thou shalt in no wise sell her for money; thou shalt not treat her as a slave, because thou hast humbled her.
`And it hath been -- if thou hast not delighted in her, that thou hast sent her away at her desire, and thou dost not at all sell her for money; thou dost not tyrannize over her, because that thou hast humbled her.

Deuteronomy 21 15
If a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the other hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers who was hated;
If a man have two wives, one beloved, and one hated, and they have borne him children, both the beloved and the hated, and the firstborn son be hers that was hated;
`When a man hath two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and they have borne to him sons (the loved one and the hated one), and the first-born son hath been to the hated one;

Deuteronomy 21 16
then it shall be, in the day that he causes his sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved the firstborn before the son of the hated, who is the firstborn:
then it shall be, in the day that he maketh his sons to inherit what he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, who is the firstborn;
then it hath been, in the day of his causing his sons to inherit that which he hath, he is not able to declare first-born the son of the loved one, in the face of the son of the hated one -- the first-born.

Deuteronomy 21 17
but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that he has; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
but he shall acknowledge as firstborn the son of the hated, by giving him a double portion of all that is found with him; for he is the firstfruits of his vigour: the right of the firstborn is his.
But the first-born, son of the hated one, he doth acknowledge, to give to him a double portion of all that is found with him, for he [is] the beginning of his strength; to him [is] the right of the first-born.

Deuteronomy 21 18
If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and, though they chasten him, will not listen to them;
If a man have an unmanageable and rebellious son, who hearkeneth not unto the voice of his father, nor unto the voice of his mother, and they have chastened him, but he hearkeneth not unto them;
`When a man hath a son apostatizing and rebellious -- he is not hearkening to the voice of his father, and to the voice of his mother, and they have chastised him, and he doth not hearken unto them --

Deuteronomy 21 19
then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place;
then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;
then laid hold on him have his father and his mother, and they have brought him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place,

Deuteronomy 21 20
and they shall tell the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
and they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is unmanageable and rebellious, he hearkeneth not unto our voice; he is a profligate and a drunkard.
and have said unto the elders of his city, Our son -- this one -- is apostatizing and rebellious; he is not hearkening to our voice -- a glutton and drunkard;

Deuteronomy 21 21
All the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones: so shall you put away the evil from the midst of you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die. And thou shalt put evil away from thy midst; and all Israel shall hear and fear.
and all the men of his city have stoned him with stones, and he hath died, and thou hast put away the evil out of thy midst, and all Israel do hear and fear.

Deuteronomy 21 22
If a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and you hang him on a tree;
And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and thou have hanged him on a tree,
`And when there is in a man a sin -- a cause of death, and he hath been put to death, and thou hast hanged him on a tree,

Deuteronomy 21 23
his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him the same day; for he who is hanged is accursed of God; that you don`t defile your land which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance.
his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day (for he that is hanged is a curse of God); and thou shalt not defile thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
his corpse doth not remain on the tree, for thou dost certainly bury him in that day -- for a thing lightly esteemed of God [is] the hanged one -- and thou dost not defile thy ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee -- an inheritance.

Deuteronomy 22 1
You shall not see your brother`s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide yourself from them: you shall surely bring them again to your brother.
Thou shalt not see thy brother`s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them back unto thy brother.
`Thou dost not see the ox of thy brother or his sheep driven away, and hast hidden thyself from them, thou dost certainly turn them back to thy brother;

Deuteronomy 22 2
If your brother isn`t near to you, or if you don`t know him, then you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall be with you until your brother seek after it, and you shall restore it to him.
And if thy brother be not near unto thee, and thou know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thy house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it unto him.
and if thy brother [is] not near unto thee, and thou hast not known him, then thou hast removed it unto the midst of thy house, and it hath been with thee till thy brother seek it, and thou hast given it back to him;

Deuteronomy 22 3
So shall you do with his donkey; and so shall you do with his garment; and so shall you do with every lost thing of your brother`s, which he has lost, and you have found: you may not hide yourself.
And so shalt thou do with his ass; and so shalt thou do with his clothing; and so shalt thou do with everything that is lost of thy brother, which he loseth, and thou findest: thou mayest not hide thyself.
and so thou dost to his ass, and so thou dost to his garment, and so thou dost to any lost thing of thy brother`s, which is lost by him, and thou hast found it; thou art not able to hide thyself.

Deuteronomy 22 4
You shall not see your brother`s donkey or his ox fallen down by the way, and hide yourself from them: you shall surely help him to lift them up again.
Thou shalt not see thy brother`s ass or his ox fall by the way, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case [help] him to lift them up.
`Thou dost not see the ass of thy brother, or his ox, falling in the way, and hast hid thyself from them; thou dost certainly raise [them] up with him.

Deuteronomy 22 5
A woman shall not wear that which pertains to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman`s garment; for whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh your God.
There shall not be a man`s apparel on a woman, neither shall a man put on a woman`s clothing; for whoever doeth so is an abomination to Jehovah thy God.
`The habiliments of a man are not on a woman, nor doth a man put on the garment of a woman, for the abomination of Jehovah thy God [is] any one doing these.
Deuteronomy 22 6
If a bird`s nest chance to be before you in the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the hen sitting on the young, or on the eggs, you shall not take the hen with the young:
If a bird`s nest chance to be before thee in the way, in any tree, or upon the ground, with young or with eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young:
`When a bird`s nest cometh before thee in the way, in any tree, or on the earth, brood or eggs, and the mother sitting on the brood or on the eggs, thou dost not take the mother with the young ones;

Deuteronomy 22 7
you shall surely let the hen go, but the young you may take to yourself; that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days.
thou shalt in any case let the dam go, and thou mayest take the young to thee, that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.
thou dost certainly send away the mother, and the young ones dost take to thyself, so that it is well with thee, and thou hast prolonged days.

Deuteronomy 22 8
When you build a new house, then you shall make a battlement for your roof, that you don`t bring blood on your house, if any man fall from there.
When thou buildest a new house, thou shalt make a parapet for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thy house, if any one should in any wise fall from it.
`When thou buildest a new house, then thou hast made a parapet to thy roof, and thou dost not put blood on thy house when one falleth from it.

Deuteronomy 22 9
You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole fruit be forfeited, the seed which you have sown, and the increase of the vineyard.
Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with [seed of] two sorts, lest the whole of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the produce of thy vineyard, be forfeited.
`Thou dost not sow thy vineyard [with] divers things, lest the fulness of the seed which thou dost sow, and the increase of the vineyard, be separated.

Deuteronomy 22 10
You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together.
Thou shalt not plough with an ox and an ass together.
`Thou dost not plow with an ox and with an ass together.

Deuteronomy 22 11
You shall not wear a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.
Thou shalt not wear a garment of mixed material, [woven] of wool and linen together.
`Thou dost not put on a mixed cloth, wool and linen together.

Deuteronomy 22 12
You shall make you fringes on the four borders of your cloak, with which you cover yourself.
Tassels shalt thou make thee on the four corners of thy clothing, wherewith thou coverest thyself.
`Fringes thou dost make to thee on the four skirts of thy covering with which thou dost cover [thyself].

Deuteronomy 22 13
If any man take a wife, and go in to her, and hate her,
If a man take a wife, and go in unto her and hate her,
`When a man taketh a wife, and hath gone in unto her, and hated her,

Deuteronomy 22 14
and lay shameful things to her charge, and bring up an evil name on her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came near to her, I didn`t find in her the tokens of virginity;
and charge her with things for scandalous talk, and cause an evil name against her to be spread abroad, and say, This woman have I taken, and I came in unto her, and I did not find her a virgin;
and laid against her actions of words, and brought out against her an evil name, and said, This woman I have taken, and I draw near unto her, and I have not found in her tokens of virginity:

Deuteronomy 22 15
then shall the father of the young lady, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the young lady`s virginity to the elders of the city in the gate;
then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel`s virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate;
`Then hath the father of the damsel -- and her mother -- taken and brought out the tokens of virginity of the damsel unto the elders of the city in the gate, 

Deuteronomy 22 16
and the young lady`s father shall tell the elders, I gave my daughter to this man to wife, and he hates her;
and the damsel`s father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man as wife, and he hates her;
and the father of the damsel hath said unto the elders, My daughter I have given to this man for a wife, and he doth hate her;

Deuteronomy 22 17
and, behold, he has laid shameful things [to her charge], saying, I didn`t find in your daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter`s virginity. They shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
and behold, he charges her with things for scandalous talk, saying, I found not thy daughter a virgin; and here are the tokens of my daughter`s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.
and lo, he hath laid actions of words, saying, I have not found to thy daughter tokens of virginity -- and these [are] the tokens of the virginity of my daughter! and they have spread out the garment before the elders of the city.

The elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him;
And the elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him;
`And the elders of that city have taken the man, and chastise him,

Deuteronomy 22 19
and they shall fine him one hundred [shekels] of silver, and give them to the father of the young lady, because he has brought up an evil name on a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath caused an evil name to be spread abroad against a virgin in Israel. And she shall remain his wife: he may not put her away all his days.
and fined him a hundred silverlings, and given to the father of the damsel, because he hath brought out an evil name on a virgin of Israel, and she is to him for a wife, he is not able to send her away all his days.

Deuteronomy 22 20
But if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the young lady;
But if this thing is true, [and] virginity hath not been found with the damsel;
`And if this thing hath been truth -- tokens of virginity have not been found for the damsel --

Deuteronomy 22 21
then they shall bring out the young lady to the door of her father`s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done folly in Israel, to play the prostitute in her father`s house: so shall you put away the evil from the midst of you.
then they shall bring out the damsel unto the entrance of her father`s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought infamy in Israel, committing fornication in her father`s house; and thou shalt put evil away from thy midst.
then they have brought out the damsel unto the opening of her father`s house, and stoned her have the men of her city with stones, and she hath died, for she hath done folly in Israel, to go a-whoring [in] her father`s house; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

Deuteronomy 22 22
If a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman: so shall you put away the evil from Israel.
If a man be found lying with a man`s wife, they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; and thou shalt put away evil from Israel.
`When a man is found lying with a woman, married to a husband, then they have died even both of them, the man who is lying with the woman, also the woman; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of Israel.

Deuteronomy 22 23
If there be a young lady who is a virgin pledged to be married to a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
If a damsel, a virgin, be betrothed to some one, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her,
`When there is a damsel, a virgin, betrothed to a man, and a man hath found her in a city, and lain with her;

Deuteronomy 22 24
then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones; the lady, because she didn`t cry, being in the city; and the man, because he has humbled his neighbor`s wife: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.
then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, [being] in the city, and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour`s wife; and thou shalt put evil away from thy 
then ye have brought them both out unto the gate of that city, and stoned them with stones, and they have died: -- the damsel, because that she hath not cried, [being] in a city; and the man, because that he hath humbled his neighbour`s wife; and thou hast put away the evil thing out of thy midst.

Deuteronomy 22 25
But if the man find the lady who is pledged to be married in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only who lay with her shall die:
But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her, then the man only that lay with her shall die;
`And if in a field the man find the damsel who is betrothed, and the man hath laid hold on her, and lain with her, then hath the man who hath lain with her died alone;

Deuteronomy 22 26
but to the lady you shall do nothing; there is in the lady no sin worthy of death: for as when a man rises against his neighbor, and kills him, even so is this matter;
and unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing: there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death; for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and murdereth him, so is this matter;
and to the damsel thou dost not do anything, the damsel hath no deadly sin; for as a man riseth against his neighbour and hath murdered him -- the life, so [is] this thing;

Deuteronomy 22 27
for he found her in the field, the pledged to be married lady cried, and there was none to save her.
for he found her in the field, the betrothed damsel cried, and there was no one to save her.
for in a field he found her, she hath cried -- the damsel who is betrothed -- and she hath no saviour.

Deuteronomy 22 28
If a man find a lady who is a virgin, who is not pledged to be married, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
If a man find a damsel, a virgin, who is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found,
`When a man findeth a damsel, a virgin who is not betrothed, and hath caught her, and lain with her, and they have been found,

Deuteronomy 22 29
then the man who lay with her shall give to the lady`s father fifty [shekels] of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.
then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel`s father fifty [shekels] of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.
then hath the man who is lying with her given to the father of the damsel fifty silverlings, and to him she is for a wife; because that he hath humbled her, he is not able to send her away all his days.

Deuteronomy 22 30
A man shall not take his father`s wife, and shall not uncover his father`s skirt.
A man shall not take his father`s wife, nor uncover his father`s skirt.
`A man doth not take his father`s wife, nor uncover his father`s skirt.

Deu 22:16 and the young lady's father shall tell the elders, I gave my daughter to this man to wife, and he hates her;
Deu 22:17 and behold, he has accused her of shameful things, saying, I didn't find in your daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. They shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
Deu 22:18 The elders of that city shall take the man and chastise him;
Deu 22:19 and they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the young lady, because he has brought up an evil name on a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.

Deu 22:23 If there is a young lady who is a virgin pledged to be married to a husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
Deu 22:24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones; the lady, because she didn't cry, being in the city; and the man, because he has humbled his neighbor's wife: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you.
Deu 22:25 But if the man find the lady who is pledged to be married in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her; then the man only who lay with her shall die:
Deu 22:26 but to the lady you shall do nothing; there is in the lady no sin worthy of death: for as when a man rises against his neighbor, and kills him, even so is this matter;
Deu 22:27 for he found her in the field, the pledged to be married lady cried, and there was none to save her.
Deu 22:28 If a man find a lady who is a virgin, who is not pledged to be married, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;
Deu 22:29 then the man who lay with her shall give to the lady's father fifty shekelsof silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has humbled her; he may not put her away all his days.
Deu 22:30 A man shall not take his father's wife, and shall not uncover his father's skirt.

Tsunamis and Christ

It’s easy to hand out advice from a position of safety and security. It’s easy to be optimistic when your own life is fine or if at present you are going through a difficult patch but you know you have good reason to believe that it’ll soon sort itself out and you will be back on a level surface again. It’s easier to be one that is standing well up on the beach, out of the fury of the surf, yelling chatty advice to some poor soul that’s being pounded by waves and driven under, panic-stricken and straining for air.
It never was that way with Christ even when he called for gallantry from people in awful situations, because it was out of the darkness of the cross and his own fears that Jesus called. I think that’s why we keep trusting Jesus Christ even when harsh realities—Asian tsunamis and day after day after day crippling circumstances— continue to pound us and nothing seems to change. I think that he has convinced us that not only has he known unceasing pressure but that when his own darkest hour came that he was still sure, still persuaded beyond argument that God could be trusted. So, in the words of the psalmist, he says something like, "The Lord was always there with me and I saw him. When I look, he is there to the right of me so I will not be shaken. And that is why down at the centre of my being I'm glad and why I find myself praising him. I know I am human and will experience the agony of death but I feel no despair—I live and I live in hope! Because you will not abandon me and let the grave have the last word; you will not allow decay and destruction to be the end of your Holy One. You have shown me what life is and how to live it and I know I will be brimful of the joy you give when you finally bring me into your presence." Acts 2:25-28.
This is the heart and these are the words of one beaten by the waves and not one safely on the beach yelling advice. And carried to us on the shrieking wind from the heart of "the perfect storm" he speaks of life and joy and assurance and hope!
All very pious, all very sweet, but do the hard facts not drown all that religious waffling? New Testament writers watched the gathering storm of Roman invasion and when a Roman tsunami broke over the nation do you think they felt less than we do? Don’t you imagine that someone pounded the table and choked with anger or frustration wanted to know what was going on? Jesus spoke of that awful time and described its horror (Luke 21:5-26)—there was nothing unrealistic about the Christ. But along with all its pain and loss and agony he said this astonishing thing (Luke 21:28), "When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
I’m not pretending to deal with the text in its historical and predictive setting. I want only to make the point that Jesus was so sure of his Father that he calls fearful followers caught up in a storm that beggared description to, "stand up, lift up your heads, your redemption is near." Would you not have expected something different? "When you see all these things come to pass, throw in the towel, wring your hands in despair, grovel and stammer because you’ve finally seen the truth and the present and future is unbroken gloom!"
That’s...not...what...he...said!
And one sufferer who knew what pain and loss and loneliness and hunger was—not because he read Charles Dickens but because he personally was on the rack—took God seriously. In Romans 8:31-39 he looked at a sad, bad world, he looked at his own agony and loss and then he looked at the cross of Christ and said, "None of that nor all of it together can persuade me that God doesn’t love us!"

                  The Healings In Gennesaret (6:53-56)

INTRODUCTION

1. Following Jesus' walk on water, other miracles soon followed...
   a. Shortly after anchoring the boat on the shores of Gennesaret - Mk 6:53
   b. When Jesus healed everyone who was brought to Him - Mk 6:54-56

2. "The Healings In Gennesaret" provide an opportunity to make
   observations about...
   a. The success of Jesus' healing ministry
   b. The purpose of Jesus' healing ministry

[Similar observations can be made about the healing ministries of Peter
and Paul, which can serve to critique so-called healing ministries today
(are they really of God?).  So let's begin by noting...]

I. THE SETTING OF THE HEALINGS

   A. IN GENNESARET...
      1. Where Jesus and His disciples anchored their boat - Mk 6:53
      2. A densely populated and fertile plain south of Capernaum
         - Hendriksen
      3. About 3 miles along the Sea of Galilee (also called the Lake of
         Gennesaret, Lk 5:1) - ibid.
      4. Its natural beauty and fertility were most remarkable... the
         plain produced walnuts, palms, figs, olives, and grapes
         - Josephus

   B. OTHER OCCASIONS...
      1. The healings of Peter - Ac 5:14-16
         a. In Jerusalem
         b. During the early days of the church
      2. The healings of Paul - Ac 19:11-12
         a. In Ephesus
         b. During his extended stay, while on his third journey

[In both rustic and urban settings, wonderful things happened when true
men of God were healing the sick.  But now let's consider carefully...]

II. THE SUCCESS OF THE HEALINGS

   A. IN GENNESARET...
      1. When people heard He was there, they gathered the sick - Mk 6:54-56
      2. Wherever He went, they brought the sick to Him
         a. On beds
         b. Laying them in the market places
      3. Note well:  "as many as touched Him were made well"

   B. OTHER OCCASIONS...
      1. Peter in Jerusalem - Ac 5:14-16
         a. The sick were laid out in the street on beds and couches
         b. People from surrounding cities were brought the sick and
            possessed
         c. Note well:  "they were all healed"
      2. Paul at Ephesus - Ac 19:11-12
         a. God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul
         b. Even handkerchiefs brought from his body to the sick healed
            them
         c. Note well:  implied is that all who received such
            ministrations were healed

[The crowds that gathered around Jesus, Peter, and Paul were
understandable.  The success of these three men was remarkable.  Now for
an observation or two about...]

III. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HEALINGS

   A. IN GENNESARET...
      1. The purpose of the healings was to confirm Jesus' claims - cf.
         Jn 5:36; 10:25,37-38
      2. People who saw such signs made the connection - e.g., Jn 3:2;
         9:30-33
      3. Jesus did refrain on one occasion from doing miracles for lack
         of faith - cf. Mt 13:58
      4. But note well:  He never failed any miracle that He Himself
         attempted!

   B. OTHER OCCASIONS...
      1. The purpose of apostolic miracles was to confirm their message
         - Mk 16:17-20
      2. God bore witness to His Word by the gifts of the Holy Spirit
         - He 2:3-4
      3. The apostles did not always heal those they knew were sick
         - cf. 2Ti 4:20
      4. But note well:  the apostles never failed any miracle they
         attempted!

CONCLUSION

1. Today, there are self-proclaimed faith healers who say God is working
   through them...
   a. Often large crowds attend their meetings, hoping to be healed
   b. But many people leave such meetings, disappointed that they were
      not healed
   c. Despite having such healers lay their hands on them, and pray for
      them

2. When true servants of God healed, everyone was healed...!
   a. Whether it was Jesus, Peter or Paul
   b. The purpose of miracles to confirm they were servants of God
   c. And God left no room for doubt!

3. The fact is, such healing ministries were for a specific purpose...
   a. They were to confirm the message and messengers as being from God
   b. Once the Word of God was completely revealed and confirmed, there
      is no longer a need for such miracles of confirmation - cf. 1Co 13:8-10
   c. Which explains why such miracles are not being done today
   d. Contrary to claims made by false teachers who mislead many

When we carefully study the miracles of Jesus and those of His apostles,
comparing them with the so-called miracle healers of today, we can
easily see the difference...
