From Gary... Today

Even though I don't have a talent for calligraphy, I enjoy the beauty of "Cursive" type writing. It adds something to the message that indicates the mood of the writing, and enhances the meaning.

Today, I thought to expand the meaning of the saying "Today is the first day of the rest of your life" by utilizing different fonts. If you read the various typeface sayings a few times, I think you will see what I mean (and probably pick your own favorite).
And then there is the message and my chosen Scripture passage...

Hebrews, Chapter 3 (WEB)
 7 Therefore, even as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today if you will hear his voice,

8 don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers tested me by proving me, and saw my works for forty years.
10 Therefore I was displeased with that generation, and said, ‘They always err in their heart, but they didn’t know my ways;’
  11 as I swore in my wrath, ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”

We all make choices each and every day which determine what our life will be. The most important choices have the greatest effect upon our lives; so I ask you - What could possibly be more important than listening to your creator?  NOT-ONE-THING is my answer!!!

Today, choose to listen To God through HIS WORD and shape the rest of this life in a way that is beautiful. And what could possibly be more wonderful than that????

PS- I thought some of your might be interested in the font names I used in the first picture, so I made another jpeg...

What's your favorite? Mine is Yesteryear!
Only one this remains to be said- "Farewell" (in Klingon of course)

Numbers 27, 28

Num 27:1 Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.
Num 27:2 They stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, saying,
Num 27:3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against Yahweh in the company of Korah: but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons.
Num 27:4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.
Num 27:5 Moses brought their cause before Yahweh.
Num 27:6 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
Num 27:7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: you shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers; and you shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.
Num 27:8 You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter.
Num 27:9 If he have no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
Num 27:10 If he have no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
Num 27:11 If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be to the children of Israel a statuteand ordinance, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
Num 27:12 Yahweh said to Moses, Go up into this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel.
Num 27:13 When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered;
Num 27:14 because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes. (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
Num 27:15 Moses spoke to Yahweh, saying,
Num 27:16 Let Yahweh, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,
Num 27:17 who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of Yahweh not be as sheep which have no shepherd.
Num 27:18 Yahweh said to Moses, Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;
Num 27:19 and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and commission him in their sight.
Num 27:20 You shall put of your honor on him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may obey.
Num 27:21 He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Yahweh: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.
Num 27:22 Moses did as Yahweh commanded him; and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:
Num 27:23 and he laid his hands on him, and commissioned him, as Yahweh spoke by Moses.

Num 28:1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
Num 28:2 Command the children of Israel, and tell them, My offering, my food for my offerings made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to me, you shall observe to offer to me in their due season.
Num 28:3 You shall tell them, This is the offering made by fire which you shall offer to Yahweh: male lambs a year old without blemish, two day by day, for a continual burnt offering.
Num 28:4 You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and you shall offer the other lamb at evening;
Num 28:5 with the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil.
Num 28:6 It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in Mount Sinai for a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to Yahweh.
Num 28:7 Its drink offering shall be the fourth part of a hin for the one lamb. You shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to Yahweh in the holy place.
Num 28:8 The other lamb you shall offer at evening: as the meal offering of the morning, and as the drink offering of it, you shall offer it, an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
Num 28:9 On the Sabbath day two male lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, and the drink offering of it:
Num 28:10 this is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, besides the continual burnt offering, and the drink offering of it.
Num 28:11 In the beginnings of your months you shall offer a burnt offering to Yahweh: two young bulls, and one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish;
Num 28:12 and three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, for each bull; and two tenth parts of fine flour for a meal offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram;
Num 28:13 and a tenth part of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering to every lamb; for a burnt offering of a pleasant aroma, an offering made by fire to Yahweh.
Num 28:14 Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull, and the third part of a hin for the ram, and the fourth part of a hin for a lamb: this is the burnt offering of every month throughout the months of the year.
Num 28:15 One male goat for a sin offering to Yahweh; it shall be offered besides the continual burnt offering, and the drink offering of it.
Num 28:16 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is Yahweh's Passover.
Num 28:17 On the fifteenth day of this month shall be a feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.
Num 28:18 In the first day shall be a holy convocation: you shall do no servile work;
Num 28:19 but you shall offer an offering made by fire, a burnt offering to Yahweh: two young bulls, and one ram, and seven male lambs a year old; they shall be to you without blemish;
Num 28:20 and their meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil: you shall offer three tenth parts for a bull, and two tenth parts for the ram.
Num 28:21 You shall offer a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;
Num 28:22 and one male goat for a sin offering, to make atonement for you.
Num 28:23 You shall offer these besides the burnt offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering.
Num 28:24 After this manner you shall offer daily, for seven days, the food of the offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh: it shall be offered besides the continual burnt offering, and the drink offering of it.
Num 28:25 On the seventh day you shall have a holy convocation: you shall do no servile work.
Num 28:26 Also in the day of the first fruits, when you offer a new meal offering to Yahweh in your feast of weeks, you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no servile work;
Num 28:27 but you shall offer a burnt offering for a pleasant aroma to Yahweh: two young bulls, one ram, seven male lambs a year old;
Num 28:28 and their meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil, three tenth parts for each bull, two tenth parts for the one ram,
Num 28:29 a tenth part for every lamb of the seven lambs;
Num 28:30 one male goat, to make atonement for you.

Num 28:31 Besides the continual burnt offering, and the meal offering of it, you shall offer them (they shall be to you without blemish), and their drink offerings.

Luke 11

Luk 11:1 It happened, that when he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples."
Luk 11:2 He said to them, "When you pray, say, 'Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on Earth, as it is in heaven.
Luk 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
Luk 11:4 Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' "
Luk 11:5 He said to them, "Which of you, if you go to a friend at midnight, and tell him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
Luk 11:6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him,'
Luk 11:7 and he from within will answer and say, 'Don't bother me. The door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give it to you'?
Luk 11:8 I tell you, although he will not rise and give it to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence, he will get up and give him as many as he needs.
Luk 11:9 "I tell you, keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep seeking, and you will find. Keep knocking, and it will be opened to you.
Luk 11:10 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
Luk 11:11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he won't give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?
Luk 11:12 Or if he asks for an egg, he won't give him a scorpion, will he?
Luk 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
Luk 11:14 He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. It happened, when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the multitudes marveled.
Luk 11:15 But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons."
Luk 11:16 Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.
Luk 11:17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. A house divided against itself falls.
Luk 11:18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.
Luk 11:19 But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore will they be your judges.
Luk 11:20 But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come to you.
Luk 11:21 "When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.
Luk 11:22 But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.
Luk 11:23 "He that is not with me is against me. He who doesn't gather with me scatters.
Luk 11:24 The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest, and finding none, he says, 'I will turn back to my house from which I came out.'
Luk 11:25 When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order.
Luk 11:26 Then he goes, and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first."
Luk 11:27 It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!"
Luk 11:28 But he said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it."
Luk 11:29 When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah, the prophet.
Luk 11:30 For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.
Luk 11:31 The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, one greater than Solomon is here.
Luk 11:32 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, one greater than Jonah is here.
Luk 11:33 "No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, that those who come in may see the light.
Luk 11:34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness.
Luk 11:35 Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn't darkness.
Luk 11:36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining gives you light."
Luk 11:37 Now as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. He went in, and sat at the table.
Luk 11:38 When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed himself before dinner.
Luk 11:39 The Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.
Luk 11:40 You foolish ones, didn't he who made the outside make the inside also?
Luk 11:41 But give for gifts to the needy those things which are within, and behold, all things will be clean to you.
Luk 11:42 But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and the love of God. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.
Luk 11:43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces.
Luk 11:44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like hidden graves, and the men who walk over them don't know it."
Luk 11:45 One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you insult us also."
Luk 11:46 He said, "Woe to you lawyers also! For you load men with burdens that are difficult to carry, and you yourselves won't even lift one finger to help carry those burdens.
Luk 11:47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
Luk 11:48 So you testify and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs.
Luk 11:49 Therefore also the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute,
Luk 11:50 that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
Luk 11:51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.' Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.
Luk 11:52 Woe to you lawyers! For you took away the key of knowledge. You didn't enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in, you hindered."
Luk 11:53 As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly angry, and to draw many things out of him;
Luk 11:54 lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch him in something he might say, that they might accuse him.

From Roy Davison... Is the Word of God written on your heart?

http://www.oldpaths.com/Archive/Davison/Roy/Allen/1940/written.html

Is the Word of God written on your heart?
About three-thousand five-hundred years ago, God chose the physical descendants of Israel as His special people. He freed them from Egyptian slavery and gave them a law. The ten commandments were written on tablets of stone.
God's law was also to be in the hearts His people. This was stated many times through the centuries.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up" (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
"You shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul" (Deuteronomy 11:18).
"For this commandment which I command you today, it is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it" (Deuteronomy 30:11-14).
"The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, And his tongue talks of justice. The law of his God is in his heart" (Psalm 37:30,31). "Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You" (Psalm 119:11).
"Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:3-6). "My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:20-23). "My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands within you. Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart" (Proverbs 7:1-3).
"Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, you people in whose heart is My law: do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their revilings" (Isaiah 51:7).
Although God sent prophets to call Israel to repentance, although the faithful encouraged their unfaithful brethren to know the Lord, not many of the physical descendants of Jacob truly had God's law in their hearts.
Thus God proclaimed: "'Behold, the days are coming,' says the Lord, 'when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,' says the Lord. 'But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel: After those days, says the Lord, I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, "Know the Lord," for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,' says the Lord. 'For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more"' (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
God's New Covenant would be based, not on physical descent, but on spiritual faithfulness. Only those with God's law written on their hearts would be God's people. They would be drawn from all nations, peoples, tribes and languages.
This prophesy was fulfilled by Jesus Christ who came to bring the New Covenant and to be the true sacrifice for the sins of the world: "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, 'This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,' then He adds, 'Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.' Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful" (Hebrews 10:14-23). See also Hebrews 8:10-12.
Christ had the law of God in His heart, as was prophesied: "Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the Book it is written of me. I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law is within my heart'' (Psalm 40:7,8).
Because Jesus was sinless, He was qualified to bear the punishment for our sins, and to replace the Old Covenant with the New: "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: 'Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you had no pleasure. Then I said, "Behold, I have come in the volume of the book it is written of Me to do Your will, O God."' Previously saying, 'Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them' (which are offered according to the law), then He said, 'Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.' He takes away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" (Hebrews 10:4-10).
Under the New Covenant, only those with God's law in their hearts are the people of God: "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, 'The man who does those things shall live by them.' But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, 'Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?"' (that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, '"Who will descend into the abyss?"' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? 'The word is near you, even in your mouth and in your heart' (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. For the Scripture says, 'Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.' For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For 'whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.' How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!' But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed our report?' So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:4-17).
How then can we have the law of God written on our hearts? By hearing His word.
Each of us should ask ourselves: Is the law of God being written on my heart? If it is, it will not be by accident.
Of King Rehoboam it is said: "And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord" (2 Chronicles 12:14). Ezra, on the other hand, "had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel" (Ezra 7:10). Having the law of God written on our hearts involves knowing it and doing it. God told Ezekiel: "Son of man, receive into your heart all My words that I speak to you, and hear with your ears. And go, get to the captives, to the children of your people, and speak to them and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord God,' whether they hear, or whether they refuse'' (Ezekiel 3:10,11).
It is not enough to attend religious services each Sunday. The law of God must be written on our hearts. Paul told the believers at Corinth that they were a letter of Christ, "written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart" (2 Corinthians 3:2,3).
James tells us that we must receive the word of God into our hearts like a seed so it can produce fruit in our lives: "Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does" (James 1:21-25).
When the law of God is written on our hearts, it will permeate our whole being. It will influence our every thought, word and action.
We must be spiritually oriented to receive the word of God into our hearts and have the mind of Christ. Paul wrote of the apostolic ministry: "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For 'Who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?' But we have the mind of Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:12-16).
What is already written on your heart now? What is being written on your heart? The laws of God or the ideas of men?
Our degenerate society is always ready to write its materialistic principles and godless opinions on our hearts. How does society do this? Mainly through the media and through social contacts.
To have the law of God written on our hearts, we must work against the bad influences of society. Be careful what you read, what you watch, what you hear. Be careful who your companions are: "Do not be deceived: 'Evil company corrupts good habits'" (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Also, be careful who your virtual companions are. The people in films you watch can easily influence the way you think and feel. Often, even the "good guys" are bad. Much of this evil influence is insidious, it is hidden. Immorality, for example, is presented as normal, acceptable behavior, and is falsely portrayed as having no bad consequences. The devil is behind this.
What if someone rang your door bell each evening, came in, and spent the whole evening in your home cursing God, using foul language and showing dirty pictures to your children? As a Christian, would you not show him the door and tell him he was not welcome? Yet, many Christians welcome such a visitor into their homes each evening. His initials are T.V.
If used with extreme caution, a television can be a source of useful and up-building information. But remember that the one who controls the switch is responsible for what is said and shown in your house. On the day of judgement we will have to give account for every idle word (Matthew 12:36). Are we not also accountable for the words our machines speak?
It takes time to prepare your heart to serve the Lord. If you spend from twenty to thirty hours a week watching television, you will not have much time left to learn the word of God.
Do not deceive yourself. You cannot take fire into your bosom, and not be burned (Proverbs 6:27). If you eat garbage, you will get sick. If you fill your mind with garbage, you will have a sick mind. If you look at pornography, you will have a pornographic mind. If you are doing this, stop before you destroy yourself. If you fill your head with feathers, you will be a feather-head. If you fill your heart with materialistic vanity, you will have a materialistic vain life. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7). Jesus said: "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things" (Matthew 12:35).
If we fill our hearts with the word of God, we will be healthy and strong. Let us rededicate our hearts to God.
There is no short-cut. It takes time and effort to allow God to write His law on our hearts. Let us listen to sermons, attend Bible classes, and read the Bible or listen to Bible tapes each day.
May the Word of God dwell richly in our hearts and in our souls. May His word be in our mouths and in our hearts, that we may do it. Let us teach the word to our children, talk of it when we sit in our house, when we ride in the car, when we lie down, and when we rise up. Let us write the commands of God on the tablets of our hearts, that He might direct our paths. Only then shall we be the people of God.

From Jim McGuiggan... Killing witches

Killing witches

There are exceptions but most non-believers think the Bible is a backward book, laced with the superstitions and and tribal nonsense we should expect from "primitive" people. But then most non-believers I've encountered down the years don't spend much time trying to hear the biblical witness tell its own story its own way. It's true of course that the Bible records ancient superstitions and nonsense but it never offers it as normative teaching. But there's enough in scripture to offend even those non-believers who aren't pugnacious. For example there's this. "Do not allow a sorceress to live" (Exodus 22:18). "A man or a woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads." (Leviticus 20:27)
Strong medicine! Not the kind of thing the educated ones in our modern society would approve of. For them the idea of punishment of any kind and for any reason has to fight for its very life. Of course not! But then our modern society isn't the biblical theocracy called Israel.
Could witches and warlocks really contact the dead? You couldn't prove they could by the OT scriptures. The incident in 1 Sam 28 seems as much a surprise to the witch as to anybody else. But if they couldn't really do anything, why were they threatened so? The effort was rebellion! Whether they could or couldn't, they tried.
Consulting spirits was the rejection of the Torah and the providence of the God who created the world, elected the patriarchs, rescued, guided, protected and sustained Israel. To proclaim his inadequacy by turning to others to achieve one's purposes was to fly not only in the face of the facts, the gracious facts, it was a violation of the covenant oath these individuals made to Yahweh as part of the People of God. To turn from his revealed and being-revealed purposes was to choose purposes not known to be his. To deliberately choose that which is without God's approval is itself an evil choice. (Even to choose that which you think is an offence to God (even if, in itself, it is not). See Romans 14:23. Some people believed eating meat left over from idol worship was sinful. Under peer pressure they were tempted to eat it anyway. Paul says the heart that would choose what it thinks offends God is a sinning heart. "I believe it offends him but I will do it anyway because others are doing it" is a decision made by someone willing to offend God. That makes the choice sinful.)
Israel was not even allowed to turn to other nations, much less their gods or spirits or the dead. Such turning from the Torah and those appointed by God to teach the Torah was a breaking of one's covenant oath. The word, 'warlock' comes from an old English word which means 'oath breaker'. In theocratic Israel that was quite literally true.
These people were subversives in the deepest sense of the word. They spread discontent throughout the nation, they spread disloyalty toward Yahweh, and they taught and practiced lies as well as fraud. They proclaimed the power of spirits and the dead over the elements and over daily life; they seduced the fearful, the sorrowful and hurting into giving money for what wasn't bread and they weakened their faith in their Lord and Lover. Even modern people, enlightened and tolerant, take treason very seriously and given the right setting they will vote to punish the known traitor very seriously.
In older times passages like these were used by the cruel and stupid to bring torture and death to the old, the ugly and lonely and there are those today who lay the blame for all that at the feet of the Bible. What rubbish. Might as well blame it for the entire lynch law and mob rule that has gone on down the centuries because it urged the execution of murderers.
These people stole faith and not just money! They stole people with their mumbo-jumbo, their potions, veils and magic cloths. See Ezekiel's scathing denunciation of all this (13:17-23). It was heartless lies, it dishonored the people, it was treason against God, and it fed on the pain and loneliness and fear of the vulnerable! Even sophisticated moderns believe that con men that deprive the vulnerable of money and peace of mind should be punished. The punishment in Israel's circumstances was severe because the crime had even deeper ramifications than these humane considerations, which are important in themselves!
And witches knew the punishment! They didn't have to be part of Israel. Had they wanted they could have withdrawn from that Community and lived apart from it as many others did. Israel wasn't called to execute non-Israelite witches. What witches couldn't do was take an oath to obey the King, share in all the benefits of that Community while acting treacherously against both King and Community.
But we see this modern and western reaction against severity in other ways. As we were leaving Singapore and entering Maylasia there were huge signs that told everyone: "If you bring drugs in here and we catch you, we'll take your life." That's the punishment! Westerners smuggle them in anyway, get caught, are sentenced to death and we go wild, screaming about the punishment being too severe. That the drugs produce countless deaths and immeasurable suffering to countless families doesn't seem to matter. We're so humane, don't you understand, so kind and compassionate. Compassionate to whom? Kind to whom? Those who doom and damn countless families! Shouldn't we be kind to the victims? The law up on those big boards against drug smuggling was a law in favor of the vulnerable. The law against witches was a law for the vulnerable!
But most of the religious response against passages like Exodus 22:18 is one of condescension. Some of us smile indulgently and wise as we are we say something like, "They were ignorant, we're advanced. We can understand those poor ignoramuses speaking in those terms, modern society knows better." What rubbish this is too. Modern society buries its millions of noses in "the Stars" columns, millions of them, believing that this vague nonsense, spat out of computers by "astrologers" who do know better, millions of them believing that their lives are guided by the stars. We’re advanced? Moses and his peers would be the ones to smile if they knew what millions are grabbing for each day in the newspapers. And even now, it’s the lonely, the fearful, the bewildered and hurting that these frauds take advantage of. A fair-minded non-believer will attempt to hear the Bible in its own setting before passing judgement.
Here's something for God's people to think about. "I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people" (Leviticus 20:6). It wasn't just the mediums God was mad at.

Jashobeam—David’s Mighty Man

by Kyle Butt, M.Div.

Encountering differences between two parallel texts in the Old Testament is not such a rare occurrence. Inevitably, when these differences arise a red flag marking a possible contradiction pops up in the mind of the reader. However, once any plausible solution presents itself that can reconcile the difference, then the red flag is dropped. For a case in point, consider 2 Samuel 23:8 and 1 Chronicles 11:11.
2 Samuel 23:8: “These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb- basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.”
1 Chronicles 11:11: “And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them at one time.”
These two verses have striking similarities, as well as obvious differences. They both talk about David’s primary mighty man, but his name is Josheb-basshebeth in 2 Samuel and Jashobeam in 1 Chronicles. This difference amounts to little more than a slight name variation. For instance, if you were to say that Robert Butt wrote this article and another person said that Kyle Butt wrote this article, both of you would be correct since the author’s name is Robert Kyle Butt. Often parallel passages in the Old Testament offer different spellings of a name or different names altogether when discussing the same individual.
The real difference between these verses resides in the number of men Jashobeam killed at one time. It seems that the verse in 2 Samuel tells us he killed 800 men at one time, while the verse in 1 Chronicles mentions only 300.
Upon further contemplation and study, several possible solutions to this “difference” become evident. One of the most obvious is that of a copyist’s error. Even in the English language, only a small portion missing from the front of the numeral 8 would make it look like a 3. In similar fashion, the Bible Knowledge Commentary states: “The difference may be due to a scribal error in copying Chronicles for the Hebrew numerical symbols 300 and 800 look much alike” (see Walvoord and Zuck, 1985, 1 Chronicles 11:11). [For a general background on copyists’ errors, please see our foundational essay on that subject,Lyons, 2007.]
However, even though a copyist’s error poses a quality explanation for the differences, others exist. One of those deals with the possibility that the verses could be discussing two separate occasions where Jashobeam defeated a multitude each time—on one occasion 300, and on another 800. This does not seem the most likely explanation, but it is a possible explanation. Along these lines, a spear is mentioned in the verse in 1 Chronicles, but no weapon is mentioned in 2 Samuel. It could be that different weapons were used in his attacks.
After studying these two parallel verses, and contemplating their obvious differences, it becomes apparent that no contradictions exist. And the two verses easily can be reconciled.
