Thank you by Gary Rose

I missed Sunday morning service due to health issues, but I heard about the sermon David Stearsman gave on Prayer. Everyone was talking about it, so naturally, when I saw this picture, it caught my attention. Along with the picture, a question came to the forefront of my mind: What do we pray about? First, I thought of Jesus’ “model prayer” in the sermon on the mount and then how many times the apostle Paul mentions prayer in his salutations to the various churches. But, there is nothing like the simplicity of just saying “THANK YOU”. And that is something we should never forget to do. Why? Because Jesus has done everything for us and we SHOULD THANK HIM.
Consider…

Luke 17 ( Modern Literal Version )
Luk 17:12, And while entering into a certain village, ten men who were lepers encountered him there, who stood farther out;
Luk 17:13, and they lifted up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master*, show-mercy to us.
Luk 17:14, ¶ And when* he saw them, he said to them, When* you travel back, show° yourselves to the priests. And it happened, while* they were going, they were cleansed.
Luk 17:15, Now one out of them, having seen that he was healed, turned back with a loud voice, glorifying God; (emphasis added)
Luk 17:16, and he fell upon his face beside his feet, giving-thanks to him, and he was a Samaritan.
Luk 17:17, ¶ But Jesus answered and said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?
Luk 17:18, Was there no one found, except this immigrant, who returned to give glory to God?
Luk 17:19, And he said to him, Stand and travel. Your faith has saved you.

Not everything in life is complicated, sometimes the best thing we can do is to remember to say THANK YOU. I think that today I will try to make that singular thought the emphasis in my prayers to God. And I hope that you will as well.

Mar. 20
Exodus 34, 35

Exo 34:1 Yahweh said to Moses, "Chisel two stone tablets like the first: and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
Exo 34:2 Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain.
Exo 34:3 No one shall come up with you; neither let anyone be seen throughout all the mountain; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mountain."
Exo 34:4 He chiseled two tablets of stone like the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up to Mount Sinai, as Yahweh had commanded him, and took in his hand two stone tablets.
Exo 34:5 Yahweh descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Yahweh.
Exo 34:6 Yahweh passed by before him, and proclaimed, "Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,
Exo 34:7 keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and disobedience and sin; and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the children's children, on the third and on the fourth generation."
Exo 34:8 Moses hurried and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped.
Exo 34:9 He said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance."
Exo 34:10 He said, "Behold, I make a covenant: before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been worked in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among which you are shall see the work of Yahweh; for it is an awesome thing that I do with you.
Exo 34:11 Observe that which I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
Exo 34:12 Be careful, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you:
Exo 34:13 but you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and you shall cut down their Asherim;
Exo 34:14 for you shall worship no other god: for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Exo 34:15 Don't make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, lest they play the prostitute after their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and one call you and you eat of his sacrifice;
Exo 34:16 and you take of their daughters to your sons, and their daughters play the prostitute after their gods, and make your sons play the prostitute after their gods.
Exo 34:17 You shall make no cast idols for yourselves.
Exo 34:18 "You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt.
Exo 34:19 All that opens the womb is mine; and all your livestock that is male, the firstborn of cow and sheep.
Exo 34:20 The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb: and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. No one shall appear before me empty.
Exo 34:21 "Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest: in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.
Exo 34:22 You shall observe the feast of weeks with the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of harvest at the year's end.
Exo 34:23 Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel.
Exo 34:24 For I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither shall any man desire your land when you go up to appear before Yahweh, your God, three times in the year.
Exo 34:25 "You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be left to the morning.
Exo 34:26 You shall bring the first of the first fruits of your ground to the house of Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk."
Exo 34:27 Yahweh said to Moses, "Write you these words: for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel."
Exo 34:28 He was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread, nor drank water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
Exo 34:29 It happened, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moses didn't know that the skin of his face shone by reason of his speaking with him.
Exo 34:30 When Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him.
Exo 34:31 Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them.
Exo 34:32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them all of the commandments that Yahweh had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.
Exo 34:33 When Moses was done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face.
Exo 34:34 But when Moses went in before Yahweh to speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out; and he came out, and spoke to the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
Exo 34:35 The children of Israel saw Moses' face, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Exo 35:1 Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said to them, "These are the words which Yahweh has commanded, that you should do them.
Exo 35:2 'Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of solemn rest to Yahweh: whoever does any work in it shall be put to death.
Exo 35:3 You shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations on the Sabbath day.' "
Exo 35:4 Moses spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "This is the thing which Yahweh commanded, saying,
Exo 35:5 'Take from among you an offering to Yahweh. Whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, Yahweh's offering: gold, silver, brass,
Exo 35:6 blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats' hair,
Exo 35:7 rams' skins dyed red, sea cow hides, acacia wood,
Exo 35:8 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense,
Exo 35:9 onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate.
Exo 35:10 " 'Let every wise-hearted man among you come, and make all that Yahweh has commanded:
Exo 35:11 the tabernacle, its outer covering, its roof, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets;
Exo 35:12 the ark, and its poles, the mercy seat, the veil of the screen;
Exo 35:13 the table with its poles and all its vessels, and the show bread;
Exo 35:14 the lampstand also for the light, with its vessels, its lamps, and the oil for the light;
Exo 35:15 and the altar of incense with its poles, the anointing oil, the sweet incense, the screen for the door, at the door of the tabernacle;
Exo 35:16 the altar of burnt offering, with its grating of brass, it poles, and all its vessels, the basin and its base;
Exo 35:17 the hangings of the court, its pillars, their sockets, and the screen for the gate of the court;
Exo 35:18 the pins of the tabernacle, the pins of the court, and their cords;
Exo 35:19 the finely worked garments, for ministering in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office.' "
Exo 35:20 All the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.
Exo 35:21 They came, everyone whose heart stirred him up, and everyone whom his spirit made willing, and brought Yahweh's offering, for the work of the Tent of Meeting, and for all of its service, and for the holy garments.
Exo 35:22 They came, both men and women, as many as were willing-hearted, and brought brooches, earrings, signet rings, and armlets, all jewels of gold; even every man who offered an offering of gold to Yahweh.
Exo 35:23 Everyone, with whom was found blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats' hair, rams' skins dyed red, and sea cow hides, brought them.
Exo 35:24 Everyone who did offer an offering of silver and brass brought Yahweh's offering; and everyone, with whom was found acacia wood for any work of the service, brought it.
Exo 35:25 All the women who were wise-hearted spun with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, the blue, the purple, the scarlet, and the fine linen.
Exo 35:26 All the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun the goats' hair.
Exo 35:27 The rulers brought the onyx stones, and the stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastplate;
Exo 35:28 and the spice, and the oil for the light, for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense.
Exo 35:29 The children of Israel brought a freewill offering to Yahweh; every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all the work, which Yahweh had commanded to be made by Moses.
Exo 35:30 Moses said to the children of Israel, "Behold, Yahweh has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
Exo 35:31 He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;
Exo 35:32 and to make skillful works, to work in gold, in silver, in brass,
Exo 35:33 in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all kinds of skillful workmanship.
Exo 35:34 He has put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.
Exo 35:35 He has filled them with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of workmanship, of the engraver, of the skillful workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of those who do any workmanship, and of those who make skillful works.

Mar. 21
Exodus 36, 37

Exo 36:1 "Bezalel and Oholiab shall work with every wise-hearted man, in whom Yahweh has put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Yahweh has commanded."
Exo 36:2 Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab, and every wise-hearted man, in whose heart Yahweh had put wisdom, even everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to the work to do it:
Exo 36:3 and they received from Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, with which to make it. They brought yet to him freewill offerings every morning.
Exo 36:4 All the wise men, who performed all the work of the sanctuary, each came from his work which they did.
Exo 36:5 They spoke to Moses, saying, "The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work which Yahweh commanded to make."
Exo 36:6 Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, "Let neither man nor woman make anything else for the offering for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing.
Exo 36:7 For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
Exo 36:8 All the wise-hearted men among those who did the work made the tabernacle with ten curtains; of fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, with cherubim, the work of the skillful workman, they made them.
Exo 36:9 The length of each curtain was twenty-eight cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits. All the curtains had one measure.
Exo 36:10 He coupled five curtains to one another, and the other five curtains he coupled one to another.
Exo 36:11 He made loops of blue on the edge of the one curtain from the edge in the coupling. Likewise he made in the edge of the curtain that was outmost in the second coupling.
Exo 36:12 He made fifty loops in the one curtain, and he made fifty loops in the edge of the curtain that was in the second coupling. The loops were opposite one to another.
Exo 36:13 He made fifty clasps of gold, and coupled the curtains one to another with the clasps: so the tabernacle was a unit.
Exo 36:14 He made curtains of goats' hair for a covering over the tabernacle. He made them eleven curtains.
Exo 36:15 The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and four cubits the breadth of each curtain. The eleven curtains had one measure.
Exo 36:16 He coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.
Exo 36:17 He made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was outmost in the coupling, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain which was outmost in the second coupling.
Exo 36:18 He made fifty clasps of brass to couple the tent together, that it might be a unit.
Exo 36:19 He made a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering of sea cow hides above.
Exo 36:20 He made the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing up.
Exo 36:21 Ten cubits was the length of a board, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each board.
Exo 36:22 Each board had two tenons, joined one to another. He made all the boards of the tabernacle this way.
Exo 36:23 He made the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward.
Exo 36:24 He made forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets under another board for its two tenons.
Exo 36:25 For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty boards,
Exo 36:26 and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
Exo 36:27 For the far part of the tabernacle westward he made six boards.
Exo 36:28 He made two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the far part.
Exo 36:29 They were double beneath, and in like manner they were all the way to its top to one ring. He did thus to both of them in the two corners.
Exo 36:30 There were eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; under every board two sockets.
Exo 36:31 He made bars of acacia wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,
Exo 36:32 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the hinder part westward.
Exo 36:33 He made the middle bar to pass through in the midst of the boards from the one end to the other.
Exo 36:34 He overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold for places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.
Exo 36:35 He made the veil of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubim. He made it the work of a skillful workman.
Exo 36:36 He made four pillars of acacia for it, and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold. He cast four sockets of silver for them.
Exo 36:37 He made a screen for the door of the tent, of blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of an embroiderer;
Exo 36:38 and the five pillars of it with their hooks. He overlaid their capitals and their fillets with gold, and their five sockets were of brass.

Exo 37:1 Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood. Its length was two and a half cubits, and its breadth a cubit and a half, and a cubit and a half its height.
Exo 37:2 He overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold for it around it.
Exo 37:3 He cast four rings of gold for it, in its four feet; even two rings on its one side, and two rings on its other side.
Exo 37:4 He made poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold.
Exo 37:5 He put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.
Exo 37:6 He made a mercy seat of pure gold. Its length was two and a half cubits, and a cubit and a half its breadth.
Exo 37:7 He made two cherubim of gold. He made them of beaten work, at the two ends of the mercy seat;
Exo 37:8 one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end. He made the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.
Exo 37:9 The cherubim spread out their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces toward one another. The faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.
Exo 37:10 He made the table of acacia wood. Its length was two cubits, and its breadth was a cubit, and its height was a cubit and a half.
Exo 37:11 He overlaid it with pure gold, and made a gold molding around it.
Exo 37:12 He made a border of a handbreadth around it, and made a golden molding on its border around it.
Exo 37:13 He cast four rings of gold for it, and put the rings in the four corners that were on its four feet.
Exo 37:14 The rings were close by the border, the places for the poles to carry the table.
Exo 37:15 He made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold, to carry the table.
Exo 37:16 He made the vessels which were on the table, its dishes, its spoons, its bowls, and its pitchers with which to pour out, of pure gold.
Exo 37:17 He made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the lampstand of beaten work. Its base, its shaft, its cups, its buds, and its flowers were of one piece with it.
Exo 37:18 There were six branches going out of its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of its one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of its other side:
Exo 37:19 three cups made like almond blossoms in one branch, a bud and a flower, and three cups made like almond blossoms in the other branch, a bud and a flower: so for the six branches going out of the lampstand.
Exo 37:20 In the lampstand were four cups made like almond blossoms, its buds and its flowers;
Exo 37:21 and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, and a bud under two branches of one piece with it, for the six branches going out of it.
Exo 37:22 Their buds and their branches were of one piece with it. The whole thing was one beaten work of pure gold.
Exo 37:23 He made its seven lamps, and its snuffers, and its snuff dishes, of pure gold.
Exo 37:24 He made it of a talent of pure gold, with all its vessels.
Exo 37:25 He made the altar of incense of acacia wood. It was square: its length was a cubit, and its breadth a cubit. Its height was two cubits. Its horns were of one piece with it.
Exo 37:26 He overlaid it with pure gold, its top, its sides around it, and its horns. He made a gold molding around it.
Exo 37:27 He made two golden rings for it under its molding crown, on its two ribs, on its two sides, for places for poles with which to carry it.
Exo 37:28 He made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold.
Exo 37:29 He made the holy anointing oil and the pure incense of sweet spices, after the art of the perfumer.

Mar. 20

Mark 12

Mar 12:1 He began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a pit for the winepress, built a tower, rented it out to a farmer, and went into another country.
Mar 12:2 When it was time, he sent a servant to the farmer to get from the farmer his share of the fruit of the vineyard.
Mar 12:3 They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty.
Mar 12:4 Again, he sent another servant to them; and they threw stones at him, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.
Mar 12:5 Again he sent another; and they killed him; and many others, beating some, and killing some.
Mar 12:6 Therefore still having one, his beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
Mar 12:7 But those farmers said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
Mar 12:8 They took him, killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
Mar 12:9 What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.
Mar 12:10 Haven't you even read this Scripture: 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner.
Mar 12:11 This was from the Lord, it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
Mar 12:12 They tried to seize him, but they feared the multitude; for they perceived that he spoke the parable against them. They left him, and went away.
Mar 12:13 They sent some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to him, that they might trap him with words.
Mar 12:14 When they had come, they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
Mar 12:15 Shall we give, or shall we not give?" But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, that I may see it."
Mar 12:16 They brought it. He said to them, "Whose is this image and inscription?" They said to him, "Caesar's."
Mar 12:17 Jesus answered them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." They marveled greatly at him.
Mar 12:18 There came to him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection. They asked him, saying,
Mar 12:19 "Teacher, Moses wrote to us, 'If a man's brother dies, and leaves a wife behind him, and leaves no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.'
Mar 12:20 There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no offspring.
Mar 12:21 The second took her, and died, leaving no children behind him. The third likewise;
Mar 12:22 and the seven took her and left no children. Last of all the woman also died.
Mar 12:23 In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be of them? For the seven had her as a wife."
Mar 12:24 Jesus answered them, "Isn't this because you are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God?
Mar 12:25 For when they will rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
Mar 12:26 But about the dead, that they are raised; haven't you read in the book of Moses, about the Bush, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'?
Mar 12:27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are therefore badly mistaken."
Mar 12:28 One of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together. Knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the greatest of all?"
Mar 12:29 Jesus answered, "The greatest is, 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one:
Mar 12:30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.
Mar 12:31 The second is like this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
Mar 12:32 The scribe said to him, "Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one, and there is none other but he,
Mar 12:33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
Mar 12:34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." No one dared ask him any question after that.
Mar 12:35 Jesus responded, as he taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?
Mar 12:36 For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet." '
Mar 12:37 Therefore David himself calls him Lord, so how can he be his son?" The common people heard him gladly.
Mar 12:38 In his teaching he said to them, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk in long robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,
Mar 12:39 and the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts:
Mar 12:40 those who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
Mar 12:41 Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how the multitude cast money into the treasury. Many who were rich cast in much.
Mar 12:42 A poor widow came, and she cast in two small brass coins, which equal a quadrans coin.
Mar 12:43 He called his disciples to himself, and said to them, "Most certainly I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,
Mar 12:44 for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on."

Mar. 21
Mark 13

Mar 13:1 As he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!"
Mar 13:2 Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down."
Mar 13:3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately,
Mar 13:4 "Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign that these things are all about to be fulfilled?"
Mar 13:5 Jesus, answering, began to tell them, "Be careful that no one leads you astray.
Mar 13:6 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and will lead many astray.
Mar 13:7 "When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don't be troubled. For those must happen, but the end is not yet.
Mar 13:8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places. There will be famines and troubles. These things are the beginning of birth pains.
Mar 13:9 But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them.
Mar 13:10 The Good News must first be preached to all the nations.
Mar 13:11 When they lead you away and deliver you up, don't be anxious beforehand, or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.
Mar 13:12 "Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.
Mar 13:13 You will be hated by all men for my name's sake, but he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.
Mar 13:14 But when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,
Mar 13:15 and let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out of his house.
Mar 13:16 Let him who is in the field not return back to take his cloak.
Mar 13:17 But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babies in those days!
Mar 13:18 Pray that your flight won't be in the winter.
Mar 13:19 For in those days there will be oppression, such as there has not been the like from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be.
Mar 13:20 Unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the chosen ones, whom he picked out, he shortened the days.
Mar 13:21 Then if anyone tells you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, there!' don't believe it.
Mar 13:22 For there will arise false christs and false prophets, and will show signs and wonders, that they may lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.
Mar 13:23 But you watch. "Behold, I have told you all things beforehand.
Mar 13:24 But in those days, after that oppression, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light,
Mar 13:25 the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.
Mar 13:26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
Mar 13:27 Then he will send out his angels, and will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the sky.
Mar 13:28 "Now from the fig tree, learn this parable. When the branch has now become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that the summer is near;
Mar 13:29 even so you also, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, at the doors.
Mar 13:30 Most certainly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen.
Mar 13:31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Mar 13:32 But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Mar 13:33 Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don't know when the time is.
Mar 13:34 "It is like a man, traveling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch.
Mar 13:35 Watch therefore, for you don't know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning;
Mar 13:36 lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping.
Mar 13:37 What I tell you, I tell all: Watch."

God loves a cheerful giver by Roy Davison

God loves a cheerful giver

“So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). The Revised Standard Version has “not reluctantly or under compulsion.”

Do not give grudgingly or under compulsion!
In the church of Christ each one is to give as he purposes in his own heart and there is to be no compulsion.
I once attended a Pentecostal tent meeting in Canada where plastic buckets were passed around several times to collect money. For a half an hour the preacher pled with the people to give more and more. He himself drove a Cadillac.
I once attended a Catholic mass as a visitor in West Flanders where the priest went up and down each row of chairs, holding out the collection basket and looking each person straight in the eye. When he came to me, I said: “No, thank you.”
Worldly churches often use unscriptural methods of obtaining money. When I was a boy there was a building near our home that we called “The Bingo Church.” The only sign was a large billboard with the words: “Bingo Every Thursday Night!” Some denominations sell lottery tickets, have rummage sales and use all kinds of gimmicks to raise money.
Some misuse religion for material gain. Paul warned Timothy about such people, “men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself” (1 Timothy 6:5).
Giving is an important aspect of being a Christian, and an opportunity to give is provided on the Lord’s day (1 Corinthians 16:2). But in the church of Christ we may not pressure people to give or use worldly devices to obtain money. Christians give as they have purposed in their own heart and as the Lord has prospered them.
Church leaders have no right to tell people how much to give or to ask for pledges. How much someone gives is between him and God. We should not ask for funds from non-Christians and visitors are not expected to contribute.
Paul wrote to Philemon: “But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary” (Philemon 14).
God wants us to give willingly out of love.

We give cheerfully because God has given so much to us.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17). “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). Jesus “gave Himself for our sins” (Galatians 1:4). “Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us” (Ephesians 5:2). God is generous and He wants us to be like Him.

God wants us to give ourselves to Him.
Even though they were poor, the churches of Macedonia gave generously because they had first given themselves to God: “Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, imploring us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we had hoped, but first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God” (2 Corinthians 8:1-5).
Christians are generous with their time and resources because they have given themselves to God and they love their fellow man.

God wants us to be generous.
“He who has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor” (Proverbs 22:9).
We are to be generous even to our enemies: “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you” (Proverbs 25:21, 22).

We are to share.
When the people asked John the Baptist, “What shall we do then?” he replied, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise” (Luke 3:10, 11).
Paul wrote: “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life” (1 Timothy 6:17-19).

God wants us to lay up treasure in heaven.
Jesus said: “Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Luke 12:33, 34).

God will bless us if we are generous.
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38). If we use a teaspoon to measure out our gifts, God will use a teaspoon for our blessings. If we use a dump-truck to bless others, God will use a dump-truck to bless us.
Paul explained to the Corinthians that God would provide for their needs if they were generous: “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: ‘He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness remains forever.’ Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God” (2 Corinthians 9:6-11).
He explains that their sharing brings glory to God: “For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men” (2 Corinthians 9:12, 13). The churches of Galatia were told: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).

God wants us to work so we can give.
Paul had set an example in this for the Christians at Ephesus: “Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me. I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:34, 35).
In his letter to this same church, he wrote: “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need” (Ephesians 4:28).

God wants us to give both personally and through the church.
Our good deeds are to be done discreetly. Jesus said: “But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6:3, 4).
Christians give on the first day of the week. Paul told the Christians at Corinth: “On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come” (1 Corinthians 16:2).
Gifts can also be given at other times to meet special needs. We read about the church at Jerusalem: “Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need” (Acts 4:34, 35).

A gift that we do not miss is not a real gift.
“Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Him and said to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood’” (Mark 12:41-44).
We are not really giving if we just give what is left over. Our giving should be planned. We are to give as we have purposed in our heart.

How then are we to give?
May we not be like the little girl who was given two coins, one to buy candy and one to put in the collection. As she skipped along the street she dropped one of the coins and it rolled into a drain. As she peered through the grate she said: “Whoops! There went the Lord’s money!”
What have we learned?
  • “Let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
  • No compulsion is to be used in the church of Christ.
  • We give cheerfully because God has given us so much.
  • God wants us to give ourselves to Him.
  • He wants us to be generous and to share so we can lay up treasure in heaven.
  • God will bless us if we are generous.
  • He wants us to work so we can give.
  • We give both personally and through the church.
  • A gift that we do not miss is not a real gift.
May the Lord bless you richly. Amen.

Excuse Makers – Then and Now

Excuse Makers – Then and Now
Last week I talked about your next step. That’s right, we all have a ‘next step’ we can take, in our growth, in our maturity, in our walk with Jesus, and in our service to God as an individual or even collectively as a church group.
Did God prompt you do anything new this past week? Is He prompting our congregation to go to the next step as a group somehow?
Just in review, last week we talked about when Peter took a great step of faith and what he needed to do that. We saw how he literally stepped out of the boat and walked on water toward Jesus.
And what did he need in order to do that?
–       The first thing that he needed was courage and reassurance from Jesus.
–       And then he simply needed to JDI, or just do it.
With that we read Peter actually walked on water; well at least as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus he was fine. He began to sink when he took his eyes off Jesus and became distracted by everything else that was going on around him. That’s when he began to sink.
And so from that lesson we learned that we need to take courage. If Jesus prompts or directs us to do something He is going to be right there to watch our backs. And then we simply need to step out, or JDI, just do it, and keep our eyes focused on our goal and on Jesus and not get distracted, frightened or dismayed by everything going on around us.
Today I want to discuss a problem even the best of us have when it comes to taking that next step or even doing something that God specifically wants us to do, and that is making up some kind of excuse as to why we can’t do it.
Did you ever feel like God wanted you to do something and you just can’t help but wonder, ‘why me Lord? Lord, are you sure you are asking the right person to do this? Why not someone else?’
Maybe the Lord has laid something on your heart this week, or maybe the Lord has put an opportunity in front of our church but all you can think of is excuses as to why we shouldn’t do it. Maybe how much it’s going to cost, or how much work may be involved, or how much it’s going to incontinence you personally. Even the best of us come up with excuses for not doing things.
But don’t fret. Realize that some of the most renowned men and women in scripture made excuse as to why they couldn’t be the one to do what God wanted them to do. For example:
Moses: Almost everyone know Moses. One day when he was 80 years old and out tending sheep God came to him in flaming bush and gave him a task to do telling Him to go to Pharaoh with the message: to: “Let my people go!”
So at 80 years old Moses was to go down into Egypt and demand that the Pharaoh simply release over a million Jews, which was his primary work force and just let them go.
Well right off we see that Moses is full of excuses when it came to taking this next step in his life. In Exodus we read how Moses respond to God and then how God responds to him. It says in Exodus 3:11,
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you[b] will worship God on this mountain.”
“But who am I ?”
There are a number of reasons we come up with excuses:
–       We feel insufficient or inadequate
–       We have a low self image or feel weak
–       Fear – afraid what may happen, or what others may think
–       Laziness or selfishly we simply don’t what to do what’s before us
Like when God prompts us to do something I think Moses may have made a number of excuses in this text for all of these reasons. He probably felt insufficient or inadequate, and to weak for such a task. He was 80 years old. He was probably afraid. That’s why He fled from Egypt 40 years earlier, he feared the Pharaoh. And maybe there was part of him that selfishly wanted to just sit and watch his sheep and not get involved. He was aa old man now.
But God had a job for him to do. And in vs 12 He tells Moses, “I will be with you.”
And then Moses tries to use the excuse that he can’t speak well and slow of speech and slow of tongue.” And then in 4:13 Moses comes right out and tells the Lord, 13 “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
And so in the next verse we read “Then the anger of the Lord burned against Moses…” and he agreed to send his older brother Aaron to help him.
Later when the Jews finally got out of Egypt and made it to the border of the Promised Land and God wanted them to go in and conquer it they were frightened and made up all kinds of excuses saying,  “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” (Numbers 13:31-33)
And so because of their lack of faith and distrust in Him, God did not allow any of them to enter the Promised Land except their children 40 years later along with Joshua and Caleb.
There were many others who tried to make excuses as to why they could not do things that God wanted them to do, God wanted to use Gideon rescue his people from the Medianites,
But in Judges 6:15 all Gidieon say to the Lord was, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.”  ‘I am poor, insignificant and way too young.’
But again in Judg. 6:16 the Lord tell him as He told others, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.”
But that wasn’t enough for Gideon, he needed proof from the Lord, a sign from the Lord.
And then there was Jeremiah  (Jeremiah 1:4-10) “Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.”
Do you see a pattern here? Over and over we read that if God prompts us to do something He promises to be right there with us. When God prompts you to take that next step, that step which you may be uncertain about, that you may feel inadequate to make, or unqualified, or because you lack experience, or you are just afraid to do, God is saying, ‘Don’t worry, I am with you. I’ve got your back and I’ll be working behind the scene to make this happen. You just have to have faith and trust me.’
Tony Robbins the motivational speaker said, “Using the power of decision gives you the capacity to get past any excuse to change any and every part of your life in an instant.”
A decision to trust God and just do it can get you past those insecurities which you may have. I would like to tell you about one more Bible character who tried to make an excuse for not doing something and that was Ester
If you remember the story of Ester, she was a beautiful young Jewish lady who became the queen of Xerxes, the Persian king who ruled over a huge empire which include the areas of what is known as Turkey, as well as Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel; it also encompassed sections of modern-day Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and Saudi Arabia.
Shortly after Ester became queen a man by the name of Haman devise a plot to have all the Jews exterminated not knowing that Queen Ester was a Jew. After Ester’s uncle Mordecai discovers the plot he went to her and asked her to plead the Jew’s case before the king. But what does she do? She makes us an excuse. Let me read this story to you in Ester 4.
“ When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly. But he went only as far as the king’s gate, because no one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it. In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
When Esther’s eunuchs and female attendants came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them. Then Esther summoned Hathak, one of the king’s eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.
So Hathak went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king’s gate. Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews. He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain it to her, and he told him to instruct her to go into the king’s presence to beg for mercy and plead with him for her people.
Hathak went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said. 10 Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, 11 “All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.”
12 When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.”  17 So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther’s instructions.
I love verse 14 where Mordecai says, 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place…. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
The same could be said of you and me, ‘who knows whether we have been put in this position in life for such a time as this, for such a job, for such a service, or even to make this next step.’
God’s will, will be done with or without you. But I truly believe He wants to help us grow and mature, and even partner with us just like when we give new jobs or responsibilities to children which we know that we could do better but we know those duties will help them mature.
So what are you going to do, make excuse as to why you can’t, or why the church can’t or shouldn’t do something? Or will you trust God enough and believe that He’s right there to help you, or help us do some truly unbelievable and amazing things.
When Jesus told his disciples to go out into all the world and make disciples and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and to teach them to obey everything He commanded, He also told them that He would always be with them (and us), even to the very end of thee age. So all we need to do is trust Him, take courage, and make a decision just do what He prompts us to do and stop making excuses as to why we can’t do something.
