Reflection by Gary Rose

This last day of 2018 is one of reflection. Reflection of what has transpired and anticipation of what will be in 2019. We understand both ourselves and the world around us by our reflections and purpose to move forward as time passes into a new year.

The apostle Paul did something like this in the last letter he wrote to Timothy . He summarizes his final situation as follows.

2 Timothy 4 (World English Bible)
7 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.  8 From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

Paul plainly states that he was faithful. He had much opposition, but he overcame all his adversaries with God’s help. I wonder, can all of us say the same? Have we done our very best, or were we lacking?

Paul looked forward to his heavenly reward. Characteristically, he thought not just of himself, but of all who genuinely love (and faithfully follow) God. Can we say the same?

So, on that last day of 2018, spend some time on both reflection and anticipation. If you can say the things Paul did, then fine; if not, you still of the opportunity to change. But the question remains – will you?

Dec. 31
Malachi 1-4

Mal 1:1 An oracle: the word of Yahweh to Israel by Malachi.
Mal 1:2 "I have loved you," says Yahweh. Yet you say, "How have you loved us?" "Wasn't Esau Jacob's brother?" says Yahweh, "Yet I loved Jacob;
Mal 1:3 but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness."
Mal 1:4 Whereas Edom says, "We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places;" thus says Yahweh of Armies, "They shall build, but I will throw down; and men will call them 'The Wicked Land,' even the people against whom Yahweh shows wrath forever."
Mal 1:5 Your eyes will see, and you will say, "Yahweh is great--even beyond the border of Israel!"
Mal 1:6 "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? Says Yahweh of Armies to you, priests, who despise my name. You say, 'How have we despised your name?'
Mal 1:7 You offer polluted bread on my altar. You say, 'How have we polluted you?' In that you say, 'Yahweh's table contemptible.'
Mal 1:8 When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn't that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn't that evil? Present it now to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?" says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 1:9 "Now, please entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?" says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 1:10 "Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you," says Yahweh of Armies, "neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
Mal 1:11 For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 1:12 "But you profane it, in that you say, 'Yahweh's table is polluted, and its fruit, even its food, is contemptible.'
Mal 1:13 You say also, 'Behold, what a weariness it is!' and you have sniffed at it," says Yahweh of Armies; "and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this at your hand?" says Yahweh.
Mal 1:14 "But the deceiver is cursed, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a blemished thing; for I am a great King," says Yahweh of Armies, "and my name is awesome among the nations."

Mal 2:1 "Now, you priests, this commandment is for you.
Mal 2:2 If you will not listen, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name," says Yahweh of Armies, "then will I send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have cursed them already, because you do not lay it to heart.
Mal 2:3 Behold, I will rebuke your seed, and will spread dung on your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it.
Mal 2:4 You will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that my covenant may be with Levi," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 2:5 "My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him who he might be reverent toward me; and he was reverent toward me, and stood in awe of my name.
Mal 2:6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity.
Mal 2:7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 2:8 But you have turned aside out of the way. You have caused many to stumble in the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 2:9 "Therefore I have also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according to the way you have not kept my ways, but have had respect for persons in the law.
Mal 2:10 Don't we all have one father? Hasn't one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers?
Mal 2:11 Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the holiness of Yahweh which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.
Mal 2:12 Yahweh will cut off, to the man who does this, him who wakes and him who answers, out of the tents of Jacob, and him who offers an offering to Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 2:13 This again you do: you cover the altar of Yahweh with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn't regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand.
Mal 2:14 Yet you say, 'Why?' Because Yahweh has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant.
Mal 2:15 Did he not make one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? Why one? He sought a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
Mal 2:16 For I hate divorce," says Yahweh, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says Yahweh of Armies. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don't deal treacherously.
Mal 2:17 You have wearied Yahweh with your words. Yet you say, 'How have we wearied him?' In that you say, 'Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of Yahweh, and he delights in them;' or 'Where is the God of justice?'

Mal 3:1 "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!" says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 3:2 "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like launderer's soap;
Mal 3:3 and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer to Yahweh offerings in righteousness.
Mal 3:4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasant to Yahweh, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.
Mal 3:5 I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don't fear me," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 3:6 "For I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
Mal 3:7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my ordinances, and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says Yahweh of Armies. "But you say, 'How shall we return?'
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me! But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In tithes and offerings.
Mal 3:9 You are cursed with the curse; for you rob me, even this whole nation.
Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this," says Yahweh of Armies, "if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough for.
Mal 3:11 I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 3:12 "All nations shall call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 3:13 "Your words have been stout against me," says Yahweh. "Yet you say, 'What have we spoken against you?'
Mal 3:14 You have said, 'It is vain to serve God;' and 'What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before Yahweh of Armies?
Mal 3:15 Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.'
Mal 3:16 Then those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another; and Yahweh listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared Yahweh, and who honored his name.
Mal 3:17 They shall be mine," says Yahweh of Armies, "my own possession in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.
Mal 3:18 Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn't serve him.
Mal 4:1 "For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up," says Yahweh of Armies, "that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
Mal 4:2 But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.
Mal 4:3 You shall tread down the wicked; for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make," says Yahweh of Armies.
Mal 4:4 "Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel, even statutes and ordinances.
Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.

Mal 4:6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse."

Genesis 1

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Gen 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Gen 1:3 God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
Gen 1:4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.
Gen 1:5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. There was evening and there was morning, one day.
Gen 1:6 God said, "Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."
Gen 1:7 God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.
Gen 1:8 God called the expanse sky. There was evening and there was morning, a second day.
Gen 1:9 God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;" and it was so.
Gen 1:10 God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:11 God said, "Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it, on the earth;" and it was so.
Gen 1:12 The earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with its seed in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
Gen 1:14 God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;
Gen 1:15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of sky to give light on the earth;" and it was so.
Gen 1:16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.
Gen 1:17 God set them in the expanse of sky to give light to the earth,
Gen 1:18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
Gen 1:20 God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky."
Gen 1:21 God created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:22 God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."
Gen 1:23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
Gen 1:24 God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;" and it was so.
Gen 1:25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.
Gen 1:26 God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
Gen 1:27 God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them.
Gen 1:28 God blessed them. God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
Gen 1:29 God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.
Gen 1:30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;" and it was so.
Gen 1:31 God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Jan. 1, 2
Matthew 1

Mat 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Mat 1:2 Abraham became the father of Isaac. Isaac became the father of Jacob. Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers.
Mat 1:3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron. Hezron became the father of Ram.
Mat 1:4 Ram became the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon. Nahshon became the father of Salmon.
Mat 1:5 Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse.
Mat 1:6 Jesse became the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
Mat 1:7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam became the father of Abijah. Abijah became the father of Asa.
Mat 1:8 Asa became the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram. Joram became the father of Uzziah.
Mat 1:9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham. Jotham became the father of Ahaz. Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah.
Mat 1:10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh. Manasseh became the father of Amon. Amon became the father of Josiah.
Mat 1:11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the exile to Babylon.
Mat 1:12 After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.
Mat 1:13 Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim. Eliakim became the father of Azor.
Mat 1:14 Azor became the father of Sadoc. Sadoc became the father of Achim. Achim became the father of Eliud.
Mat 1:15 Eliud became the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan. Matthan became the father of Jacob.
Mat 1:16 Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Mat 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the exile to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to the Christ, fourteen generations.
Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Mat 1:19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
Mat 1:20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Mat 1:21 She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
Mat 1:22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
Mat 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel;" which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
Mat 1:24 Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
Mat 1:25 and didn't know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

Christ - Yes; The Church - No? by T. Pierce Brown

Christ - Yes; The Church - No?

Most of us have heard the expression that is the title of this article. Those of us who preach and/or write have been quick to point out that the very idea is ridiculous from a Biblical standpoint, for when one accepts Christ properly in response to his gracious offer of salvation, one is automatically a part of the church. Sadly enough, most of our speaking and writing is heard or read only by those who already know that. It is probable that we have failed to properly appreciate some very important points.
First, those who use the expression, "Christ-yes; the church-no" do not mean by the expression what we mean. To them the church is merely a denomination that they have been taught has nothing to do with salvation (which is true with respect to the church with which they are acquainted) and mostly deals with empty rituals that have very little relationship to the problems of this life or the hope of the next. If we consider the expression from their viewpoint, instead of arguing with them and showing how wrong they are, we should agree with them -- that is the churches about which they are speaking are not related to Christ. Then we may be able to show them the difference between the Biblical concept of the church and what theirs has been.
Another problem arises, of which very few of us seem to be aware. When we are confronted with such a situation as described above, we launch into a discussion that relates to the greatness of the church, the glory of the church, the necessity of the church, the organization of the church, the work of the church, how to get membership in the church, and other such topics. We do not seem to be aware that one may learn all the rituals and doctrines about the church -- even the Lord's church -- without ever having Christ presented to them in such a fashion that they are constrained to love and obey him. 2 Corinthians 5:14 says, "For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead." Let us examine an ordinary discussion and see if the point can be seen more clearly.
We are studying with a person who is willing to accept the Bible as his authority for his religious activity. We point out to him that Paul says in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." He readily admits it, and knows that he is lost. We rapidly turn to Acts 2:38 and show him that when lost persons wanted to know what to do, they were told, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." They hear that, and are glad, and immediately ask, "Can I be baptized right now?" We rejoice and baptize them. How many times have you done this, or seen it done? But where in the story has the person really been made aware of the love of Christ, or learned the gospel message in such a fashion that he feels constrained to fall on his knees and say, "Thank you, God, for your gracious love! I want to commit my life to you, now and forever?" We may have explained to him that salvation is in Christ (Acts 4:12) and the way the Bible says to get into Christ is to be baptized into him (Rom. 6:3-4 and Gal. 3:27). We assume that knowing those facts will cause him to love the Lord, but it is not necessarily so. Paul gives a glimpse of what we are trying to impress upon you when he said in 1 Corinthians 2:2, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." The awareness and deep appreciation of the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf is the thing that creates love for him, not simply an understanding that we need to be baptized in order to be saved.
Do you have any idea why many members of the Lord's church does not come for Bible study on Sunday morning, and does not come back on Wednesday night? Can you guess why the average member gives less than 5% of his income to advance the cause of Christ? Have you ever wondered why less than 5% of the average membership of the church are involved in any personal way with leading a person to Christ? One of the answers is that many have been converted to a plan of salvation, a safe church, a system of doctrine, a friendly loving fellowship, or any number of other things, but not moved to surrender their lives to the Lord because their love for Christ impelled them to do it. They, like the Samaritans of 2 Kings 17:26, know the "manner (or rituals) of the god of the land," but have not been so taught that the love of Christ impels them to do what they do.

Sam Harris Myths (2) by Jim McGuiggan

Sam Harris Myths (2)

It could be my bias, of course, but I can't help thinking that atheist Sam Harris whinges a lot. Not only has he done some whimpering about fellow-atheists criticizing how he goes about proclaiming his faith, he's now whining about atheists being kept out of politics. Now I don't know how many atheists want to get into politics but are held back specifically because sixty seven per cent would rather not have an atheist as President. I'm going to guess that you won't find many atheists who were on the verge of beginning the long run for the presidency until recently but dropped the notion when they heard the Newsweek poll result.
Then Harris juxtaposes his list of myths that is supposed to give us the reasons 67% of Americans would rather not have an atheist for President. Harris said he was going to deflate the myths to help put atheists in the senate, congress and the White House. Bless me, is he writing for fellow-atheists or for the 67% that are believers? I'm going to take it that he's trying to persuade believers with such pieces as this Los Angeles Times serving. Is he really aiming to persuade believers? Maybe these believers aren't the rabid dogmatists he keeps saying they are. If they're the sickness and poison that are at the heart of America wouldn't you think he's wasting his time talking to them? I mean these believers are no part of that elite group of intellectuals in the NAS and they're sick dogmatists to boot.

{In any case, if he thinks this sloppy little piece is going to change minds he should think again. G.K. Chesterton said he was an atheist until he started reading atheist material and had his first doubts about his doubts. Then he read the atheist Robert Ingersoll and said to himself, "Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.")

But for all his whimpering about how muzzled atheists are in America, Sam is beside himself with delight when he tells us that 93% of the members of the National Academy of Science are atheists.

I take it, then, that being an atheist in America is no hindrance to someone becoming a part of probably the most powerful fraternity in the Western world. Put the pharmaceutical companies, their political lobbyists, the scientists, the equipment manufacturers, etc., all together in a symbiotic relationship and you have a force that gets its way to an astonishing degree. Harris pretends that atheists are downtrodden and that he needs to deflate the myths that he claims are keeping atheists from having "a larger role in our national discourse." You think that fraternity doesn't have a power disproportionate to its numbers? (And I don't hear any state supported colleges and universities launching an investigation into the vast sums of taxpayers money being spent on nurturing atheists for the NAS.)

On top of all that, he wants to leave the impression that 67% of Americans would rather not have an atheist for President because they think that atheists are (characteristically) immoral. Sixty-seven out of every hundred Americans think that atheists don't love their husbands and wives, their children, their friends and don't live in warm and honourable faithfulness with them?

Sixty-seven out of every hundred Americans think that if you're an atheist you don't see beauty in a little child or a golden field of wheat or some majestic mountain range?

This is supposed to be what's keeping an atheist from getting to be President?

Drivel.

That kind of believer is mythical.

JESUS IS THE WAY by Alfred Shannon Jr.

JESUS IS THE WAY

How do we get there, from here? How do we get from planet earth, to heaven’s open portal? If we don’t find the way to get there while we’re here, we definitely won’t find the way once our life expires. Our answer is found in the pages of God’s Word. The only way we can get to heaven is to be buried with Christ by baptism, and arise to walk in the newness of life. If we knowingly reject it, we’re lost. If we ignorantly refuse it, we’re lost. If we sincerely get it wrong, for whatever reason, we’re lost. Jesus is the way, the gospel is the plan, and heaven is the reward.

Letters From God

Letters From God

Reading Luke 10: 38-42 “While Jesus and his followers were traveling, Jesus went into a town. A woman named Martha let Jesus stay at her house.  39 Martha had a sister named Mary, who was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach. 40 But Martha was busy with all the work to be done. She went in and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me alone to do all the work? Tell her to help me.”
41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things. 42 Only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the better thing, and it will never be taken away from her.” NIV
As a Christians, wouldn’t it be nice to get a personal communication from God every day. Imagine going out the mailbox and finding a letter of encouragement or instruction from God everyday. Wouldn’t that be awesome. Can you imagine getting letters like these in the mail:
Dear Ben,
Here’s something for you to think about today, I have blessed you in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
I chose you before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in my sight.         In love I predestined you to be adopted as My son through Jesus Christ, because it was what I wanted and it pleased me to do so.
I have redeemed you through with My Son Jesus’ blood, and have forgiven your sins, It is my gift to you
I have also made known to you the mysteries of My will which I revealed through Christ because that also pleased me as well.
Ben, think about and enjoy these blessing today,
Your loving heavenly Father, God     (From Ephesians 1:1-9)

Dear Ben,
I thought you could use these instructions today. Ben, you Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to others and love them. Honor others above yourself.  Don’t lack in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, in serving Me.            Ben, be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with My people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Even bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Ben, do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.        Do not take revenge, but leave that up to Me for as it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”
Ben do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Love you Lots, Your Father God      (From Romans 12:9-21)

I wonder how you would treat those letters if they were actually from God addressed to you?  Would you tear them open to see what God had to say to you each day? Would you cherish those letters and save them like a treasure? Or would you just read them real quick and maybe stack them up like a old pile of magazines?

Hopefully that would not be the case. Hopefully you would go through them periodically, maybe even refer back to them if something came up in your life that you know He wrote to you about. Maybe refer to that last one if someone started treating you bad. I think it would make God feel good knowing that His letters were not being treated like ‘junk mail.’ Or, that you even re-read and refer to them often.

Would not such correspondence every day be a precious treasure?

Well that’s what you have when you take the time each day to pick your Bible and read from it. It contains personal messages from Him to you.

The Bible is the main way that God speaks to us on a personal level. And what He has to say within is important. I am sure you’ve heard it over and over before about the importance of reading your Bible every day.

But how can we take better advantage of what He writes and what we read?  I have to admit, I have a problem when I read. Quite frankly no matter what book I read from I don’t remember as much as I would like to remember after reading it. Even if I read an amazing statement, it won’t be too long before that fact fades away. So if some of you are like me I am concerned about How we can take better advantage of what God is trying to tell us without forgetting it so quickly.

The answer is a relatively simple one and it’s this; When you read God’s word I suggest you read it with a pen or pencil. I find when I read the Bible, God’s letter to me, the Spirit almost always causes a particular verse or passage to stand out. You could have read the same thing over 5 times before but for some reason on that particular day you notice something you never saw before. That’s when you need to take that pencil and underline it.

Better yet I would like to share with you a practice that has changed lives across this globe, and that is start a journal.  What am I talking about?

A journal is simply a notebook where you can write down what God says to you that day. A journal is not a diary; it is notebook of precious gems or profound treasures that God reveals to you so that you do not forget them or why they are important.

How many of your really want to draw God’s thoughts out of scripture and them imprint them on your soul – this is one way to do it.

If the Bible just sits on a shelf or your coffee table it’s just another book.      But when we open its pages to your eyes and drink it in, and then take notes on those special things He wants you to see, then the Spirit breathes those truths into your life.

I am constantly taking notes on things I read, or when I go to hear people speak, even when I watch or listen to TV or radio programs. If not I forget.

Whether you realize it or not, You honor God by note taking. Taking notes is one of the best ways to honor any instructor. It’s a statement saying that what they have to say is very important to you, ‘note worthy’, something worth saving, preserving so that you can go back to it again.

In the book entitled, THE DIVINE MENTOR, the author teaches a very helpful technique to journal your thoughts as you read scripture, and I would like to share what he has taught thousands do, and it has changed lives.

If you can remember the word SOAP you can remember this simple yet life changing technique,   The word SOAP is a simple acrostic:  S = Scripture;    O = Observation;   A = Application; and  P = Prayer.

So after you read a portion of scripture, in your notebook write down the date, then write the Scripture reference and what it was all about. Then list some personal observation you noticed. Then the Applications you can personally make to yourself from that scripture, and then write out a small prayer.

More than likely a year from now you will not remember that verse and why it made such an impression to you on that day, but when you write it these things down, and refer back to them, you will remember.

(Here is an example of one of my journal entries)

January 5
Scripture: Luke 8:22-25                                                                                 As Jesus and His disciples were sailing across a lake, Jesus fell asleep in the boat, and a fierce wind storm came up and the disciples were so afraid that they woke Jesus up . They told Him that ‘We are going to drown.”  Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and the waves and all went calm. Then Jesus asked them, “Where is your faith?”
The text goes on to say that they were amazed and asked one another,  ”Who can this be.  He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

My Observations:
Jesus got so tired he fell to sleep and did not wake up. He was really tired. This shows me His humanity and how He is in some like us when we get over tired.
Also, the weather must have been quite fierce for those seasoned fisherman to be so afraid.
Also, I wonder if Jesus asked them, “where is your faith” more because of their fear and reactions in the situation. Maybe they would not have received such a rebuke from Him of they simply came to Him, and calmly woke Him up letting Him simply know about their concern and then asking Him to please take care of the matter. But instead their reaction was more like, “WAKE UP LORD, WE ARE GONNA DIE!!”

Application:                                                                                                        No matter what storms of life may come our way we should not forget that Jesus is more powerful that we are and able to handle the situation. We can either get all worked up and flustered like those men, or we can  simply turn to Him in faith and ask Him to handle it and help us through it. We need to trust Him all the way!. Our fear, our anxiety, our frustrations, and poor reactions do not do any good and will not help.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, Help me to recognize that you are ever present and that you love me. When difficult, scary, or nerve racking situations arise help me to simply trust in you, and turn to you immediately so that I do not get consumed with anxiety, fear or other bad or negative emotions. I Praise you Father for your care and strength, and majesty.

I know life is full of too many things that can rob our time and distract us from sitting at the feet of our Lord, hearing what He has to say.

In Luke 10:38-42 God sent us a message for the day. As busy as both Mary and Martha could have been, Mary made the better choice. She realized that time spent with Jesus was more important than anything else. There will always be other things to do.

I hope that you make that same choice each day. And I hope that if you do, you will do in a way that really makes it count so that you will remember and benefit from what you read.

I pray God’s blessing upon you.
