From Gary... The Composite Bible

Today, with so many translations available to the English reader, you really have to ask yourself:

" What Bible translation should I use"

My answer to this question is to find a literal translation and then progressively compare it to more literal translations.  This forces you to think of not only the general meaning of the text, but the differences between the words as well.  Listed below is the book of 3rd John; as you read, I think you will see the benefit of what I am saying.

Note: The completed work can be found on compositebible.com.  There are a variety of PDF Bible combinations to choose from or you can read online if you prefer or download one or more of the four Microsoft Access Database programs (a free runtime edition of MS Access is available).

Enjoy your study!!!

3 John
3 John 1 1
The elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.
The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
The Elder to Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth!

3 John 1 2
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.
Beloved, I desire that in all things thou shouldest prosper and be in health, even as thy
soul prospers.
beloved, concerning all things I desire thee to prosper, and to be in health, even
as thy soul doth prosper,

3 John 1 3
For I rejoiced greatly, when brothers came and testified about your truth, even as you walk in
truth.
For I rejoiced exceedingly when [the] brethren came and bore testimony to thy [holding
fast the] truth, even as *thou* walkest in truth.
for I rejoiced exceedingly, brethren coming and testifying of the truth in thee,
even as thou in truth dost walk;

3 John 1 4
I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.
I have no greater joy than these things that I hear of my children walking in the truth.
greater than these things I have no joy, that I may hear of my children in truth
walking.

3 John 1 5
Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you accomplish for those who are brothers and
strangers.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully [in] whatever thou mayest have wrought towards the
brethren and that strangers,
Beloved, faithfully dost thou do whatever thou mayest work to the brethren and to
the strangers,

3 John 1 6
They have testified about your love before the assembly. You will do well to send them forward
on their journey in a manner worthy of God,
(who have witnessed of thy love before [the] assembly,) in setting forward whom on their
journey worthily of God, thou wilt do well;
who did testify of thy love before an assembly, whom thou wilt do well, having
sent forward worthily of God,

3 John 1 7
because for the sake of the Name they went out, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
for for the name have they gone forth, taking nothing of those of the nations.
because for [His] name they went forth, nothing receiving from the nations;

3 John 1 8
We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
*We* therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow-workers with the truth.
we, then, ought to receive such, that fellow-workers we may become to the truth.

3 John 1 9
I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn`t accept what
we say.
I wrote something to the assembly; but Diotrephes, who loves to have the first place
among them, receives us not.
I did write to the assembly, but he who is loving the first place among them --
Diotrephes -- doth not receive us;

3 John 1 10
Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with
wicked words. Not content with this, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and those
who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.
For this reason, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he does, babbling
against us with wicked words; and not content with these, neither does he himself
receive the brethren; and those who would he prevents, and casts [them] out of the
because of this, if I may come, I will cause him to remember his works that he
doth, with evil words prating against us; and not content with these, neither doth
he himself receive the brethren, and those intending he doth forbid, and out of
the assembly he doth cast.

3 John 1 11
Beloved, don`t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He
who does evil hasn`t seen God.
Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He that does good is of God. He that
does evil has not seen God.
Beloved, be not thou following that which is evil, but that which is good; he who
is doing good, of God he is, and he who is doing evil hath not seen God;

3 John 1 12
Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that
our testimony is true.
Demetrius has witness borne to him by all, and by the truth itself; and *we* also bear
witness, and thou knowest that our witness is true.
to Demetrius testimony hath been given by all, and by the truth itself, and we also
-- we do testify, and ye have known that our testimony is true.

3 John 1 13
I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen;
I had many things to write to thee, but I will not with ink and pen write to thee;
Many things I had to write, but I do not wish through ink and pen to write to thee,

3 John 1 14
but I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you.
Greet the friends by name.
but I hope soon to see thee, and we will speak mouth to mouth. Peace [be] to thee. The
friends greet thee. Greet the friends by name.
and I hope straightway to see thee, and mouth to mouth we shall speak. Peace to
thee! salute thee do the friends; be saluting the friends by name.

encouragement to press on. ... vs. 5

B. Comfort through suffering: Godly sacrifice is

equal to ANY problem. 1 Cor 10:13

     3. God has given us ALL a charge to be "helpers" to
help build up the BODY OF CHRIST.

God given strength in the PAST 8-9

     1. What is the most vivid pain you can remember?
         (Sensitive teeth in 1993)

     2. What did it mean to you when you first realized you
         were getting better ?

     3. What if your suffering were brought about by your
         efforts to spread the Gospel?

     4. What God has started, GOD will finish.

     5. With each and every victory you experience, your
faith grows and grows and grows.

     6. What value is there in suffering ... confidence that
God will have HIS way with you AGAIN... this is
         HOPE.

E. Comfort for suffering:
Godly confidence for the FUTURE 10

     1. The future (and this verse) is really tied to the past.

     2. This is what faith is all about.

     3. The essence of faith is confidence in GOD !

      FAITH)

C. Suffering produces FAITH.

D. Suffering is actually GOOD FOR YOU.

E. SUFFERING BRINGS YOU CLOSER TO GOD
    (AND OTHERS CLOSER TO YOU).

Wanted for "Justice": The Creator of all the Universe (and HIS followers)

History repeats itself.  And those who will not learn from it will undoubted repeat it.  Since basic history is not taught in our schools and even the mere mention of religion is thought to be a travesty of our constitution (which is not what the founding fathers meant by the separation of CHURCH AND STATE).  This sign, although ridiculous now, could be a portent of the future.  Remember what the Roman Empire did to the early Christians prior to Emperor Constantine?  Frankly, its a depressing thought to think my grandchildren may and my great-grandchildren will live in a police state.  However, The Bible was penned to give encouragement in times of hardship and its words come to me again and again with hope...

1 Peter, Chapter 2
17  Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.  18 Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.  19 For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.  20 For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.  21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,  22 who did not sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”  23 Who, when he was cursed, didn’t curse back. When he suffered, didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;  24 who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.  25 For you were going astray like sheep; but now have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Nobody who truly understands what it means to be a Christian will say that being a Christian is easy.  Opposition has always been there and will ever be.  But, our hope is the example of Jesus and his ways are to be ours.  Even when HE went to the CROSS he trusted in God; so should our trust be!!!  Even if the worst happens and our society becomes a genuine police state, we know God can overcome it and anything else human beings can imagine.  Why?  Because we have the story of the victory in the Bible and the secular records to prove it.  Remember the magnificent Roman Empire?  Nothing, absolutely NOTHING is more powerful than THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!

From Gary V. Womack... Vacation From God?

Vacation From God?

Man's concept of deity was typically limited to the concept of local gods. Each nation was thought to have their own god. Consequently, the God of Israel was understood by the surrounding nations as "just another god" among many gods. But the God of heaven is not confined to earthly places.

Examples - Judg. 16:23
Dagon - the god of Philistia

2 Kgs. 1:3 Baalzebub - the god of Ekron

Abraham acknowledged God wherever he travelled:

Gen. 12:1-8 Abraham leaves home & erects
alters in Canaan & at Bethel. He
                   erected many alters to God.

Gen. 28:10-17 His grandson, Jacob, en route to
Haran had a vision of a ladder
going up to heaven - He hadn't
                       known God was there.

God is ever-present

Psm. 139:1-12 God sees in all places - There is
                        no escaping His presence.

We can't take a vacation from God. Yet we need to have a time to rest:

Mk. 6:30-44 Jesus & His disciples went to a
desert place to rest -  but the crowds
found them & Jesus fed 5,000

What if God took a vacation from us - and did not provide for us?

When we go on vacation - take Him with you - because you are His temple:

Do we act - dress differently when we are away where no one knows us?

Remember your influence goes with you where ever you go.

1 Cor. 6:15-ff Our body belongs to God.

Temple - [naos] = "A shrine or sanctuary"

Wherever we go - remember that God dwells within us:

Jn. 14:23-24 "Jesus answered and said to him
(Judas - not Iscariot ), 'If anyone loves
Me, he will keep My word, and My
Father will love him, and We will come
to him and make Our home with him.
                     (24) He who does not love Me does
not keep My words, and the word
which you hear is not Mine but the
                     Father's who sent Me.' "

God led Israel out of Egypt - His presence seen in the pillars of fire & cloud:

Ex. 13:21-22 "And the Lord went before them by
day in a pillar of cloud to lead the
way, and by night in a pillar of fire to
give them light, so as to go by day
and night. (22) He did not take away
the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar
of fire by night from before the
                      people."

Moses pleaded with God not to depart - but to lead them to Canaan:

Ex. 33:7-16 If God would not lead them, they
                   would not go. Our attitude?

We need to have this same mind - that we dare not go without Him near.

God is always not far from each one of us:

Acts 17:24-27 Paul at Athens taught that God is
not confined but yet is near

Joshua was given assurance that God would not leave him:

Deut. 31:1-8 "I will never leave you nor forsake
                      you..."

When we go on vacation, will we leave Him behind?

Will we plan ahead to meet with brethren to worship Him?

Mt. 18:19-20 (Jesus) "Again I say to you that if two
of you agree on earth concerning
anything that they ask, it will be done
for them by My Father in heaven. (20)
For where two or three are gathered
together in My name, I am there in the
                     midst of them."

Midst - [mesos ] = "In the middle." Is Christ in the center of our life?

There is no vacation from God.

INVITATION

Eph. 1:3 Every spiritual blessing is available to
us in heavenly places in Christ

Eph. 2:7 We can sit together with Him in
               heavenly places

How do we enter into Christ in order to sit in heavenly places?

Gal. 3:26-28 Baptism puts us into Christ.

From Gary... The tooth murderer

I saw this post from the Christian Chronicle on facebook today and thought you might enjoy it.  Those who have ever taken gas when having a tooth pulled will relate to this big-time!!!  It was interesting to me because Abbie is a student at Oklahoma Christian College and therefore I think its safe to assume that she is a member of the church of Christ.  According to Jimmy Kimmel, this video has gone "viral" and is therefore getting national attention!!!  So, she says some funny things while medicated - so what?  Well, medication is a drug and removes inhibitions.  People let their guard down and you get an insight into who they really are - not just what they pretend to be.  In this case, the innocence and sensitivity she shows is praiseworthy.  Its truly refreshing to see a young person who obviously is a credit to her parents.  I like the way Paul talks about such things, so I have listed this passage from the book of Philippians...

Philippians, Chapter 2
12  So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.  13 For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.  14 Do all things without murmurings and disputes,  15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world, 16 holding up the word of life; that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.

I probably will never meet this young lady, but I would like to let everyone who reads this know that I pray that she will never lose her innocence and pleasant ways. Think about it; if you can't apply this to yourself, well, there is no time like today to change!!!  And you don't even have to post a video!!!!!

From Gary V. Womack... Transformed to his image

TRANSFORMED TO HIS IMAGE

Lk. 6:27-36, 40 "...Everyone who is perfectly
trained will be like his teacher."
                         Loving your enemies = Merciful

Mt. 6:43-ff Loving your enemies makes you like
                 your heavenly Father.

The nature & character of God is unique:
All-seeing - All-knowing - All-powerful - Ever-present We are none of these things

We are to become like Him as we grow in His grace.

Jn. 1:11-18 Jesus "declared" the Father - & gave
us "power to become Sons of God.

This was a matter of God's choosing before He made us:

Rom. 8:29 "For whom He forknew, He also
predestined to be conformed to the
image of His Son, that He might be the
                  firstborn among many brethren."

Rom. 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, that you present
your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable to God, which is your
reasonable service. (2) And do not be
conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your
mind, that you may prove what is that
good and acceptable and perfect will
                     of God."

Consider some characteristics in which we are to become like God:

HOLY

Lev. 11:41-ff Laws regarding clean & unclean
animals - was to teach the Israelites
                     about holiness.

They were to consecrate themselves and be holy like God

1 Pet. 1:13-16 "Therefore gird up the loins of your
mind, be sober, and rest your hope
fully upon the grace that is to be
brought to you at the revelation of
                      Jesus Christ; (14) as obedient
                      children, not conforming yourselves to
                      the former lusts, as in your ignorance;
                      (15) but as He who called you is holy,
you also be holy in all your conduct,
                      (16) because it is written, 'Be holy, for
                      I am holy.'' "

GRACE & TRUTH

Jn. 1:14, 17 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt
among us, and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the
Father, full of grace and truth."

                    (17) "For the law was given through
Moses, but grace and truth came
                    through Jesus Christ."

We are to grow in grace & knowledge of Christ = truth:

2 Pet. 3:18 "but grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To
Him be the glory both now and forever.
                   Amen."

NOT TO HOLD ON TO OUR ANGER

Psm. 103:8-10 "The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, and abounding in
mercy. (9) He will not always strive
with us, nor will He keep His anger
forever. (10) He has not dealt with
us according to our sins, nor
                        punished us according to our
                        iniquities."

We are not to let the sun go down on our wrath-
'
Eph. 4:26-27 "Be angry, and do not sin: do not let
the sun go down on your wrath. (27)
nor give place to the devil."

PATIENT - LONGSUFFERING

2 Pet. 3:14-15 "Therefore, beloved, looking forward
to these things, be diligent to be
found by Him in peace, without spot
                        and blameless; (15) and consider
that the longsuffering of our Lord is
salvation - as also our beloved
                        brother Paul, according to the
wisdom given to him, has written to
                        you."

1 Cor. 13:4 "Love suffers long and is kind; love does
not envy; love does not parade itself, is
                   not puffed up;"

IMPARTIAL - NOT PREJUDICED

Deut. 10:17-19 "For the Lord your God is God of
gods and Lord of lords, the great
                        God, mighty and awesome, who
shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.
                        (18) He administers justice for the
fatherless and the widow, and loves
the stranger, giving him food and
                        clothing. (19) Therefore love the
stranger, for you were strangers in
                        the land of Egypt."

Jas. 2:1-9 We are not to hold the faith of our Lord with partiality.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

1 Jn. 4:7-11 The proof of God's love is our
                    example

1 Cor. 13:1-3 Love is the measure of our maturity
                      in Christ.

All who are in Christ are to set Him as their pattern for living - their goal

Col. 3:1-11 The "new man" is renewed in
                   knowledge according to his
                   Creator's image.

2 Cor. 3:12-ff (18) "But we all...are being
                             transformed into the same
                             image from glory to glory..."

God's children are blessed to walk in the way of the Lord - anticipating a time when we will see Him and be like Him.

1 Jn. 3:1-3 "Behold what manner of love the Father
has bestowed on us, that we should be
called children of God! Therefore the
world does not know us, because it did
not know Him. (2) Beloved, now we are
children of God; and it has not yet been
revealed what we shall be, but we know
that when He is revealed, we shall be
like Him, for we shall see Him as He is
                   (3) And everyone who has this hope in
Him purifies himself, just as He is pure."

We are purified in the blood of Christ - to walk a new life

Rom. 6:3-13 Being dead to sin - we are freed
from sin & made alive in Christ

2 Cor. 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a
new creation; old things have passed
away; behold, all things have become
                   new."
