From Mark Copeland... Basics For Living In Christ (Colossians 3:1-11)

                     "THE EPISTLE TO THE COLOSSIANS"

Basics For Living In Christ (3:1-11)

INTRODUCTION

1. In chapters 1-2, Paul has maintained that Christ is "all-sufficient"
in matters of salvation and overcoming sin - cf. Col 2:10

2. Beginning now in chapter 3, Paul gives some basic and practical
admonitions that pertain to living a life in Christ

3. When carried out, these "Basics For Living In Christ" will assure
that we find in Christ everything we need for this life and the one
   to come

[The first admonition is found in verses 1-4...]

I. SEEK THE HEAVENLY (1-4)

   A. SET YOUR MIND ON THINGS ABOVE (1-2)
      1. Why is this so important?
         a. It is essential if we desire to be "transformed" - Ro 12:2
         b. It is necessary if we want to be able to "live according to
            the Spirit" - Ro 8:5-6
      2. How do we "seek those things which are above"?
         a. By directing our minds' attention to such things mentioned
            in Php 4:8
         b. More specifically, by setting our attention on the Word of
            God, where we find:
            1) Christ foreshadowed and foretold in the Old Testament
            2) Christ's life and teachings in the Gospels
            3) Christ's church in the Book of Acts
            4) Christ's fuller teachings in the Epistles
            5) Christ's encouragement and ultimate victory in the Book
               of Revelation

   B. FURTHER REASONS TO SEEK THOSE THINGS ABOVE (3-4)
      1. We "died" (3)
         a. This occurs when one is baptized into Christ, which is a
burial into His death in which we are "crucified with Him"
            - Ro 6:3-6
         b. We "died" to sin , that we might be free from sin and now
live with Christ - Ro 6:7-13
      2. Thus, we were also "raised with Christ" (1)
         a. Which occurs when one comes forth from baptism - Col 2:12
("...in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him...")
         b. We were raised so that we might "walk in newness of life"
            - Ro 6:4
      3. Our life is "hidden with Christ in God" (3)
         a. As Paul wrote to the Galatians: "I have been crucified with
            Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
            - Ga 2:20
         b. We have denied self, crucified self, so it is now Christ Who
            is to live in us!
      4. When Christ appears in glory, so will we! (4)
         a. The first three reasons for us to "seek the heavenly" were
based upon what has happened in the PAST
         b. This motivation is predicated upon what is promised for the
            FUTURE!

[And what a wonderful promise that is! But to obtain that promise
requires not only that we set our "minds" on things proper, but that we
properly deal with our "bodies" as well.

To put it another way, from verses 5-9 we learn that we must also...]

II. SLAY THE EARTHLY (5-9)

   A. WE MUST "PUT TO DEATH" THE SENSUAL SINS (5-7)
      1. Those that appeal to the "lust of the flesh"
         a. Fornication
            1) Grk., porneia {por-ni'-ah}
            2) A general term for any illicit sexual intercourse;
               includes adultery, homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality
         b. Uncleanness
            1) Grk., akatharsia {ak-ath-ar-see'-ah}
            2) Uncleanness in a moral sense: the impurity of lustful,
               luxurious, profligate living
         c. Passion (inordinate affection, KJV)
            1) Grk., pathos {path'-os}
            2) Used by the Greeks in either a good or bad sense; in the
NT in a bad sense, it means depraved passion, vile
               passions
         d. Evil desire (evil concupiscence, KJV)
            1) Grk., epithumia {ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah}
            2) Desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden,
               lust
      2. Also that which appeals to the "lust of the eyes"
         a. Covetousness
            1) Grk., pleonexia {pleh-on-ex-ee'-ah}
            2) Greedy desire to have more, covetousness, avarice
         b. Described by Paul to be equivalent to idolatry!
            1) For covetousness puts things in the place of God
            2) We are to set our minds on things above (where God is),
but when we covet material objects we have our minds on
things below, making such objects our idols!
      3. Motivation for putting these things to death
         a. To avoid the coming wrath of God! - Col 2:6-7
         b. It's one thing to do these things when we "lived in them",
but in Christ we have "died to them"!

   B. WE MUST ALSO "PUT OFF" THE SOCIAL SINS (8-9)
      1. Sins of the "emotions"
         a. Anger
            1) Grk., orge {or-gay'}
            2) Movement or agitation of the soul, impulse, desire, any
               violent emotion, but esp. anger
         b. Wrath
            1) Grk., thumos {thoo-mos'}
            2) Passion, angry, heat, anger forthwith boiling up and soon
               subsiding again
         c. Malice
            1) Grk., kakia {kak-ee'-ah}
            2) Malignity, malice, ill-will, desire to injure
      2. Sins of the "tongue"
         a. Blasphemy
            1) Grk., blasphemia {blas-fay-me'-ah}
            2) Slander, detraction, speech injurious, to another's good
name; impious and reproachful speech injurious to divine
               majesty
         b. Filthy language (filthy communication, KJV)
            1) Grk., aischrologia {ahee-skhrol-og-ee'-ah}
            2) Foul speaking, low and obscene speech
         c. Lying
            1) Grk., pseudomai {psyoo'-dom-ahee}
            2) To lie, to speak deliberate falsehoods; to deceive one by
               a lie, to lie to
      3. The reason for putting off all these things: we must complete
in PRACTICE what we started in PRINCIPLE - Col 3:9b
         a. When we were baptized, we "put off" the old man with his
            deeds (in principle)
            - Col 2:11-12; 3:9
         b. In practice, it does not occur overnight, thus the need for
such admonitions as: "But now you must also put off all
            these..." - Col 3:8

[Finally, and briefly, we notice in verses 10-11 an admonition by
Paul which will be expanded upon in the next section (12-17). He
encourages us to...]

III. STRENGTHEN THE CHRISTLY (10-11)

   A. FOR WE HAVE PUT ON THE NEW MAN (10)
      1. In baptism into Christ, we "put on Christ" - Ga 3:27
      2. Thus, in PRINCIPLE we also put on "the new man" who is renewed
"according to the image of Him who created him"
      3. What we have done in PRINCIPLE (Col 3:10), we will need to do
         in PRACTICE (cf. Col 3:12)

   B. FOR THE GOAL IS "CHRIST IS ALL AND IN ALL" (11)
      1. To be renewed according to the image of Christ! - cf. Ro 8:29
      2. To become like Christ, and in so doing, destroy the barriers
         that have long divided man!

CONCLUSION

1. This is what might be called "the whole duty of man" in New Testament
terms: to be renewed according to the image of Christ!

2. To accomplish this goal, we must heed the admonitions of Paul and...
   a. Seek The Heavenly
   b. Slay The Earthly
   c. Strengthen The Christly

3. We will examine more what is involved in "strengthening the Christly"
in the next study (verses 12-17)

4. For now, did you notice that everything in this chapter assumes that
one has been "raised with Christ" (cf. Col 3:1, "IF THEN you were
   raised with Christ...")?
   a. How are we raised with Christ?
   b. Paul has already described how, in Col 2:11-13, where we learn
that it is in baptism that God will raise one who has faith in the
      working of God!
   c. Have you been baptized into Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins (Ac 2:38), and to be able to walk in newness of life
      (Ro 6:3-5)...?

From Jim McGuiggan... Pepeismai gar! (for I am persuaded)

Pepeismai gar!

Pepeismai gar! Paul said that something (Someone) had persuaded him some time earlier and that as he wrote he was still utterly convinced that nothing could separate humans from the love of God that is seen in and as Jesus Christ (Romans 8:38).
Romans, Chapter 8
35  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36 Even as it is written, “For your sake we are killed all day long. We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Note: I have added both the English and Greek text for clairty.  Gary

In a whole series of trenchant denials he lists what might be offered as proofs that God had changed his mind and turned from his commitment to creation. Ten times he says "no!" What about death? Does that not prove that God has turned from us, that in the face of our moral ugliness he has finally and forever walked away? "No, in fact, it was through death, the death of Christ, that God placarded his faithful refusal to abandon us!" What of life with all its dangers and challenges? "Nor that!" What about evil angels? "Nor those!" And what of emperors and such? "Nor those!" And on he goes. Ten times he says no—this man who knew what pain and deprivation and loneliness was—ten times he says no and concludes by saying "and nothing else you could name!" can keep God from us.
He didn't persuade himself of this! The verb is passive. He didn't use to think that way but now that he had seen the brutal realities of life, day in and day out, he had changed his mind. The verb is a perfect passive. He was persuaded and that frame of mind was still with him after all he had seen and heard and felt and experienced!
And if we had made a list of our own that had things in it that weren't explicit in his he'd have said, "Nor that!" or "Not that either!" He'd have said no until the cows came home because for him, amidst all the teeming number of realities, there was one that was more real than all else—God's self-disclosure in Jesus Christ.
Had we asked him if he didn't accept that harsh realities were real, he'd have said, "Oh, they're real enough. I've met them face to face and so have a host besides me. But God is real! And Jesus Christ is real. I look at all those harsh realities, walk around them, pick them up and feel their weight and how solid they are and then I turn and see him watching me. One look at him and the remotest hint of hesitation in me burns away and the adventure continues. I get weary, of course, and I don't always feel joyful and clear-headed. But that's part of the adventure, don't you know. I have the complete awareness that even when I feel these I'm still in the adventure. It's part of the adventure that you brawl with tough realities. The real secret is to see him and once you've seen him, really seen him, there's no going back. By then he has you and you don't want to go back. Back to what, for pity's sake? Back to less than him? That isn't a real option. Not for people like us"

From Ben Fronczek.... ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK

ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK

ASK, SEEK, KNOCK Luke 11: 5-13

Do you ever feel a wee bit impatient with God? Like, does it ever seem like it takes too long for Him to answer your prayers? Certainly all of us have had questions concerning prayer at some point in our life.  Like… – Is He really listening to me?
- Why do I have to keep praying for something I have already prayed for when I know that God is going to answer that prayer one way or another? Isn’t that unbelief Or…
- What about those times when we pray and waited for an answer, and yet no answer is forthcoming? What are we to do? Now after talking about prayer already, in the Sermon on the Mount saying that we should not pray like the show off hypocrites of that time, the Lord continues his instruction by telling a story here in chapter 7 saying,
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?  Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
Luke records it a little different,  Read: Luke 11:5-13 (click on link)
I like Luke’s account because he recalls this story that Jesus told about the man coming to his friends house with a request. Both accounts are still meant to teach the same lesson. So what is Jesus attempting to teach us by telling us this story, this parable? Just like in Matthew 7, Jesus instructs us to ASK, SEEK, and KNOCK. And if we approach Father God and ask, seek, and knock, something is going to happen. Those who seek will find. Those who ask will be answered, and those who knock, doors will be opened. But then Jesus goes on and tries to help clarify this by giving these two illustrations.
First of all, the one where a friend comes banging on someone’s door in the middle of the night.
Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him…”
In order to understand this parable we need to understand a few things about first century culture. First of all, food was not as readily available as it is today. There were of course, no 24 hour stores to run to. Therefore enough bread was baked each day for the needs of that day. Now it was also an accepted rule of hospitality that a visitor should be welcomed and cared for, regardless of the hour of his arrival. In order to avoid the intense midday heat, people often traveled in the evening and after dark. A traveler arriving near midnight was not uncommon.
Here is the dilemma. This poor unprepared host has a late arriving guest who is hungry after a long and exhausting journey and it is his duty as host to provide a meal, but he has no bread. And not to provide for his guest’s would not only bring shame upon himself and his family but to the village as a whole. But what was one to do if he had nothing to serve? Well he’d probably go to a friend’s house regardless of the time and to ask for his help. And this was possibly something they would all have considered doing if they had to.
The rest of the story speaks of this tension, as Jesus continues the story in verse seven,
“…7 “Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
Even today it is easy to understand this man’s reluctance to help his friend. Anyone who has ever wrestled to get children into bed, understands this man’s unwillingness to do anything that will wake them. But since the whole family slept in the same room, to get up and meet this man’s needs was a real inconvenience. The man inside the house initial refused the request; friendship alone was not a sufficient reason to upset the whole household. Ultimately, the reluctant friend got up and gave his neighbor what he needed. Why? For one reason only, the persistence of the man making the request.
Jesus is not comparing God to a sleepy, selfish and angry neighbor. He is contrasting the two. He is telling the disciples that if a neighbor can be persuaded to meet the needs of a friend, how much more will your FATHER in heaven meet the needs of His children.
And likewise the second illustration is similar.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
So what can we learn from Jesus here?
#1. I believe that Jesus is letting us know, without a doubt that prayer is important.
Not just prayers of thanksgiving and praise, which I believe that God deserves to hear from us every day, Jesus lets us know that all right to ask God for things we need.  As a matter of fact it seems as though He wants and expects us to ask. Doesn’t every father or mother expect their children to ask of them?  In doing so a child express their confidence in their parent helping them with their need as well as show the comfort they have in that relationship. Many times we won’t ask of strangers but we have no problem asking of someone we love and trust.  Same is true when we ask of God. God not only expects his children to ask, it is also a sigh of how much we love and trust Him.
#2. The second thing I see here is that Jesus seems to be indicating that there should be some degree of persistence as one asks of God.
It wasn’t because it was the man’s friend at the door that he got up out of bed to give him bread. Rather the text says in verse 8 that it was because of the man’s boldness or otherwise translated, ‘persistence’ in other versions.  It’s the only time the original Greek word used here for persistence appears in the entire New Testament. The Greek word carries the idea of “shamelessness.”
The text tells us that the man who came making the request was without shame, persistent and bold, as he continued pleading and pounding on the door until his friend responded. Maybe the reason for our failure in prayer is that we have not been persistent enough. We haven’t been beating on God’s door asking and seeking enough.
#3. And that leads to the next thought.  We may wonder, ‘What gives us the right to come boldly or shamelessly come to God with our needs.’
Maybe this little story will help:
A Roman emperor traveled down the street in his chariot as a part of a parade, Cheering people lined the streets while the legionnaires were stationed to keep the people at a safe distance. The emperor’s family sat on a platform to watch him go by in all the pride of his position. As the emperor came near the place where his family was stationed, a young boy jumped from the platform, burrowed through the crowd, and tried to dodge a legionnaire so he could run to the emperor’s chariot. The soldier stopped him and said, “You cannot go near him.” The boy laughed, then said; “He may be your emperor but he is my father.” Then he ran into his father’s open arms.”
The writer of Hebrew reminds us as believer’s that because our high priest Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven, we can  “come boldly before the throne of grace” (Hebews 4:14-16). We have no need to fear because we are children of the King of kings. Over and over we see that if Jesus wanted to communicate anything it was that God is not some kind of distant, all powerful, impersonal deity. Rather God is our abba Father who art in heaven and Holy is his name. From the very beginning HE wanted sons and daughters that would be His children.
Listen to what the apostle Paul in Ephesians 1:3-6
“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. 4 Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. NLT
As a son, and a daughter you have every right to plead to your Father in heaven, and I believe he expects us to do so.
I believe another thing we see here in the text is that…

#4 WE ARE TO PRAY EXPECTANTLY
From the first story we learned that God does answer prayer, and from this second analogy we learn that His answers are always good ones. Because God is a good God, a loving heavenly Father, He can be expected not only to answer our prayers, but in answer them in such a way that they will be for our highest good. (Romans 8:28)  The bottom line of the whole matter is now given in Matt. 7:10,
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
Now I believe that as we keep asking and seeking, part of this seeking is seeking to discover what God’s will is in the matter. I don’t think God will put things into our hands until we’re ready or He first prepares our hearts. God has a plan and we need to accept His timing and plan. Someone has said it this way,
“The greatest blessing of prayer is not just getting an answer but being the kind of person that God can trust with the answer.”
And sometime that answer will be a “NO.” Today I want to remind you that you have a Father in Heaven who does care for your needs. He wants you to ask, seek, and knock with persistence and  expectation. We need to be reminded that He isn’t being mean by having us wait for what we ask for, nor is He being cruel by saying no. Rather, like a perfectly loving parent we need to trust Him, not only trust Him in His timing and but also trust His judgments as well. I pray that you can have that kind of relationship with Him.

From Gary... Learning lessons, then remembering them.

The above statement is true!!!  We only have today; so why not live it in as positive way as possible.  Here is one way to make this happen....
Philippians, Chapter 4
8  Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.

Yep, you guessed it, your thinking will determine how you perceive your day!  Oh, you still may have problems; maybe even major ones- but, with the right attitude, they will not seem insurmountable!!!  The more I look at the picture, the more I realize that that little red heart is the key!!!!  Now, if I could only learn not to let things bother me, I would be 100% each and every day!!!!!

From Ben Fronczek... Judging Others

Judging Others

Judging Others
Jesus said in Matthew 7:1-6
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?  How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”
In our reading, Jesus instructs that one should not judge. But, how far should that go? Is there a difference between judging something and being judgemental toward someone? Or is there a difference between judging and discerning? Let me illustrate both of these with a couple of illustration:
- The Lone Ranger and Tonto stopped in the desert for the night. After they got their tent all set up, both men entered it and fell sound asleep.
Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, “Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see?” The Lone Ranger replies, “I see millions of stars.” “What that tell you?” asked Tonto. The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. And Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What’s it tell you, Tonto?”
Tonto is silent for a moment, then says, “Kemo Sabe, you are dumber than a box of rocks! It means someone stole tent.”
The Lone Ranger was discerning. But when Tonto called the Lone Ranger “dumber than a box of rocks” that’s being judgmental.
- Suppose you come to a stoplight that just turned red and someone comes up from behind you and goes through that red light. A discerning person might think, “That was not too smart. That was down right dangerous. That’s a good way to have an accident.”
The judgmental person might think and say, “That idiot! That person is absolutely stupid! They’re going to get killed and wind up in hell!”   Now that’s being highly judgmental!
We all need to discern what is right and wrong in life without being judgmental but sometimes, it’s hard to separate the two. Yet when say something to someone who definitely doing something wrong what do they say? “The Bible says ‘Judge not’.” Now does the Bible tell us that we are not allowed to judge between right and wrong, good and bad, truth and error? How do we obey God’s commands to uphold the truth and stand against wickedness while keeping judgmental attitudes in balance? I hope that this lesson will clear up this issue for you.
I. To begin with in Matt. 7:1-2 Jesus said,
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Now was Jesus is saying that one should never ever judge others? I think not. As with all Bible study, one needs to consider the context.  In doing so, as one reads the Sermon on the Mt., over and over we see that Jesus has been raising the bar when it comes to living a holy and righteous life. Earlier we read that He told those He was talking to not to do what the  hypocritical Pharisees and teachers of the law were doing, but rather their own righteousness should surpass that of those men because they were greedy, self indulgent, show offs and hypocrites. (Mt. 5:20 & Mt. 23). (Click on verses to read.)
So when Jesus tells the people not to judge others, I believe that He did not want the people to make judgments like those men who were harsh, critical, and ready to condemn anyone who got in their way, or didn’t meet their standards.
Now consider some ways, that for example, we should not judge one another:
-We should not judge people because of their outward appearance, how they look, how they dress, nor by their nationality or color of their skin. There’s good and bad in all.
- We should not judge people based on their financial status.
- We should not judge anyone because of their physical condition
I think it is our human nature to want to judge people. But it one thing to evaluate and discern but it’s quite another to make and pass judgment on them. We are told it is not our place to do that.
James 4:11-12
“Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?”
James' words are very powerful and plain. ‘WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO JUDGE SOMEONE ELSE?’ By judging others we put ourselves in the roll of God and that is dangerous territory. Did you know that’s what caused Satan to get kicked out of heaven!
If you take the time to look at what Jesus emphasizes here in our text, He said that if you are going to start making such judgment about other individuals we in turn will be judged according to those same standard that we judge others.  I believe that the real warning here.
We don’t have the right to judge someone’s heart based how long a person’s hair is or how much money they have. Only God can do that.  But I believe we can judge someone by looking at and considering their actions and words when placed beside the truth and real facts.
If were not allowed to make any evaluations and judgments at all, it would becomes impossible to distinguish between right and wrong. People could simply do anything that they’d wanted to do.
The Bible commands us to make some judgments. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 commands us:
“Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
So we can make some observations and if we see that certain individuals are doing something ungodly or illegal we should make a judgment and choose to stay away from such individuals base on this verse.
But we need to be careful. In Matthew 7:3 Jesus goes on to say
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

The point of what Jesus is saying is this: don’t even think about criticizing or judging others if you’ve got more problems to be condemned for than they do. That’s just what the Pharisees we doing.
Then we see in the following text how discerning we are to be. As a matter of fact I believe Jesus warns us that it might be dangerous if we  don’t make some good judgments and treat everyone the same. Matt. 7:6
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. ”

The dogs and pigs of Jesus’ time were not quite what we think of today. As someone said, “We’re not talking Lassie and Miss Piggy here!” What is Jesus talking about in this verse? He is talking about discerning that which was evil and dangerous in life. There are some people who treat that which is good, including the gospel and all things having to do with God and Christ with scorn and contempt.
- During a cold winter, a farmer found a snake stiff and frozen with cold. The snake said to the Farmer, “If you pick me up and hold me to your stomach, your body will make me warm.” The Farmer said, “If I do that you will bite me.” The Snake answered, “Why would I do that if you save me? The Farmer had compassion on the Snake, and taking it up, placed it in his bosom. The Snake was quickly revived by the warmth and resumed its natural instincts, bit the farmer, inflicting on him a mortal wound. “Oh,” cried the Farmer, “Why did you bite me after I saved you?”  “You knew I was a snake when you picked me up,” answered the Snake. With his last breath the farmer said, “I guess I got what I deserved for pitying a scoundrel.”
Get the point? If you cozy up to a snake you’re liable to get bit!
Jesus said,
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.”
So I believe that Jesus was telling them and us that we need to be discerning in life. When it comes to spreading the good news or other blessing from God some people will not listen. And some people will even do worse than not listen. Some will turn on you and attack you! Or abuse you! Or cuss you!
Give a Bible to a true atheist and what will he do with it? Probably trash it; maybe even throw it at you. Give what is holy and good to those who care less and Jesus said you may even put yourself in danger. So what do we do with such people? Do you remember what Jesus told His disciple to do what they were rejected. He said leave and shake the dust of yourself.  I think we need to walk away from them and not waste our time arguing with them. Turn them over to God, and then pray for them. (Consider Paul. He was an enemy but God did to him what no man could do.)
CONCLUSION—
So today we see here Jesus does not condemn all judging. He says we’re to make right judgments, but we also avoid being harsh and hypocritical judges who are unwilling to live by the standards we’re using to judge others. So my  encouragement today is that you do not condemn others but let go and let God be the judge with a wise and discerning prayerful heart.

From Jim McGuiggan... FAITH AND CHRISTIAN FAITH

FAITH AND CHRISTIAN FAITH

The faith of the NT Church is faith in Jesus Christ and nothing less than that. Christians are not in the business along with other decent people and clubs and movements to make people kinder and nicer and more law-abiding. The Church is not to say to all these other socially useful people, “Look, we recognize that we’re in the same business only we believe we have the best program and the greatest source of inspiration—Jesus Christ—so we urge you to join our movement and the world will be a better place.”
Christians are not in the same business as non-Christians. They don’t have a program that’s tailored to make a better society even though it’s true that if a person becomes a true Christian he/she will be fervent in righteousness, compassion, helpful generosity and social usefulness.
No matter who has it, Christians need not deny that faith in God is real; but what they cannot say is that faith in God that rejects faith in Jesus is Christian! It is not!
The Hebrew writer would never have dreamed of denying the rich faith of his fellow-Jews who lived before Jesus came; in fact, he extolled it (see Hebrews 11), but he insisted that with the coming of Jesus the faith that God now called for from Jews was faith in God in and through Jesus Christ (compare 1 Peter 1:21’s repetition)—it was Jesus Christ-shaped faith. Less than that, whatever else it was it wasn’t Christian. Now it might not matter if faith is not Christ-shaped but there’s no point in claiming that a faith in God that refuses to be faith in God through Jesus Christ is the same as Christian faith.
The believing men and women of Hebrews 11 committed to God in faith in terms of God’s self-disclosure up to the point before Christ came but with the coming of Jesus God revealed himself as never before and he called those Jews who were confronted with that self-revelation in Jesus to commit to him in a new way of faith. You simply can’t read Acts 2—4, 7 and 13 without seeing that the gospel-ers called many people who already believed in God to come to faith in God in and through Jesus Christ.
The believing heart that devoted itself to God prior to Jesus’ public manifestation and/or the gospel of Jesus did not cease to be a believing heart; no, it now saw God in a new way and the God it had always embraced was now embraced in the person of Jesus.
A new song was now to be sung and a new gospel phase was now to be announced. What we have in the NT gospel and lies in and under the NT text is a new faith for a new People of God about new things that God has done in creating a new heaven and a new earth in Jesus Christ. The very existence of the new People of God is the visible witness that God in Jesus has been and is in the world and moving it to a final and glorious revelation.
This isn't just faith—it is THE CHRISTIAN faith.

From Mark Copeland... Believer, Beware! (Colossians 2:9-23)

                     "THE EPISTLE TO THE COLOSSIANS"

                       Believer, Beware! (2:9-23)

INTRODUCTION

1. It was Paul's desire that his brethren be "perfect (complete) in
   Christ" - Col 1:28; 2:1-3

2. But there were influences at Colosse which endangered their
salvation, against which Paul warns in Col 2:8-23

3. As we consider what those threats were, we see similar threats today
   as well!

4. In other words, subtle (and some not so subtle) influences which may
promise us much, but can easily lead us away from Christ!

[For example, we notice from verses 8-10 that at Colosse there was the
danger of...]

I. PHILOSOPHIES AND TRADITIONS OF MEN (8-10)

   A. THE DANGER OF MAN-MADE PHILOSOPHY AND TRADITION...
      1. They "cheat" you
         a. They don't deliver what they may promise
         b. They can even cheat you of your salvation!
            1) By rendering our worship and service to God as "vain"
            2) As Jesus warned in Mt 15:9
      2. This they do through "empty deceit"
         a. It is not evident (otherwise, none would accept it)
         b. But like many of the workings of Satan, it is through
            "deception"

   B. WE ARE FACED WITH SIMILAR INFLUENCES TODAY...
      1. The "philosophies" of:
         a. Atheism
         b. Evolution
         c. Humanism
      2. The "traditions of men," found rampant in:
         a. Protestant denominations
         b. Catholicism (both "Roman" and "Orthodox")
         c. Various cults
      3. Though these "philosophies" and "traditions of men" may possess
a lot of truth, it is the error in them that can lead one away
from the pure and simple doctrine of Jesus Christ!

   C. WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND...
      1. In "Jesus Christ" are found ALL the treasures of wisdom and
         knowledge - Col 2:3
      2. In "Jesus Christ" is to be found the FULLNESS of the Godhead
         bodily - Col 2:9
      3. In "Jesus Christ" we are COMPLETE - Col 2:10
      4. As Peter wrote in his second epistle: "Grace and peace be
multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our
Lord, as His divine power has given to us ALL things that
pertain to life and godliness , through the knowledge of Him
who called us by glory and virtue," - 2Pe 1:2-3

[So "Believer, Beware!" when anyone suggests that we need the
philosophies or traditions of men in addition to or instead of Jesus
Christ!

In verses 11-17, Paul deals with what was a real problem in the first
century church...]

II. JUDAISTIC CEREMONIALISM (11-17)

   A. THE PROBLEM IN THE FIRST CENTURY CHURCH...
      1. Many Jewish Christians felt it necessary for Gentile Christians
to be circumcised and keep the Law of Moses in ADDITION to
following Christ - cf. Ac 15:1-5
      2. The early church had to constantly deal with this problem
         a. Which they did at Jerusalem (where the problem originated)
            - Ac 15:6-27
         b. Which Paul did in writing Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, and
            Colossians
      3. Here in Col 2:11-17, Paul deals with the problem by pointing
         out:
         a. Through baptism into Christ, we experience the "true
circumcision", which is a cutting away of the sins of the
            flesh - Col 2:11-13
         b. By His death on the cross, Jesus has taken the Old Law out
of the way - Col 2:14-15 (cf. Ep 2:14-16)
         c. Therefore, we are to let no one try to judge (condemn) us
in matters of the Old Law - Col 2:16-17

   B. TODAY, THERE ARE MANY WHO STILL TRY TO BIND THE OLD LAW UPON
       CHRISTIANS...
      1. Various denominations with their Sabbaths and food regulations
      2. Other religions with their separate priesthood and many other
practices, based upon the Old Testament, and not the New!

   C. AS THOSE IN CHRIST...
      1. We have died to the Law and Jewish ceremonialism (this
especially pertains to Jewish Christians) - Ro 7:1-6
      2. We have been set free, and need to beware of becoming
"entangled again with a yoke of bondage." - Ga 5:1
      3. If we seek justification by our observance of things found in
the Old Law, we are fallen from grace! - Ga 5:2-4

[So "Believer, Beware!" when people try to impose things upon you which
are based upon the Law of Moses. Remember, "you are complete in HIM."

In verses 18-19, we see there was still another danger at Colosse...]

III. THE WORSHIP OF ANGELS (18-19)

   A. WHY WOULD PEOPLE WORSHIP ANGELS?
      1. Perhaps because they felt angels were needed as "intercessors"
      2. Perhaps with "a sense of humility", they felt they could not go
to God (or even Jesus) directly

   B. THE PROBLEM WITH ANGEL WORSHIP...
      1. It is actually the result of a "false humility" and based upon
one's "vain imagination" - Col 2:18 (cf. He 4:14-16, where
we learn we can "come boldly to the throne of grace")
      2. It actually diverts one away from Christ, the rightful "Head of
         the body" - Col 2:19
         a. For this reason, angels refused any semblance of worship -
            Re 22:8-9
         b. And so did the apostle Peter - Ac 10:25-26

   C. TODAY, SOME RELIGIONS HAVE DEVELOPED A COUNTERPART TO THE WORSHIP
      OF ANGELS...
      1. E.g., Catholicism with its veneration of Mary and the "saints"
      2. The reasoning is similar: "humility" ("We need them to
         intercede for us")
      3. Though an attempt is made to distinguish between "veneration"
and "worship", in practice the distinction is lost among the
         average person
      4. And the result is still the same: "not holding fast to the
Head," venerating other beings rather than Christ!

[Finally, from verses 20-23 we can glean that there was the problem
of...]

IV. ASCETICISM (20-23)

   A. ASCETICISM HAS OFTEN BEEN OFFERED AS A KEY TO "SELF-CONTROL"
      1. Such as fasting and other forms of abstinence
      2. Or self-flagellation (beating one's self with whips)

   B. BUT ASCETICISM IS OF NO REAL VALUE AGAINST THE "INDULGENCE OF THE
      FLESH"
      1. As Paul points out in Col 2:23
      2. Indeed, transformation comes through "renewing the MIND", not
         afflicting the BODY
         a. As Paul wrote in Ro 12:1-2
         b. Yes, those who "set their minds on the things of the Spirit"
are the ones "who live according to the Spirit" - Ro 8:5
            1) They are the ones who by the Spirit will be able to "put
to death the deeds of the body" - Ro 8:13
            2) For the "fruit of the Spirit" includes self-control - Ga 5:22-23

   C. TODAY, WE MUST BEWARE OF THE FALSE CLAIMS OF ASCETICISM!
      1. Fasting may have a place in the lives of Christians - cf. Ac
         13:2-3; 14:23; 1Co 7:5; 2Co 11:27
         a. But not for the purpose of developing self-control!
         b. Rather as a means of humbling oneself before God as we pray,
that God might hear our prayer - cf. Ezr 8:21; Mt 6:17-18
      2. Those religions that would teach various forms of "asceticism"
as a means of developing spiritual maturity would have us
believe that "the secret" is in such "neglect of the body"
      3. But Christ is "the secret", and by holding fast to Him we find
the ability to "crucify the flesh with its passions and
         desires." - Ga 5:24

CONCLUSION

1. As we live the Christian life, attempting to mature spiritually,
beware of any doctrine or teaching of man that suggests we need more
   than Jesus Christ!

2. Remember, He is "THE" way (not "A" way) - Jn 14:6

3. And we are COMPLETE in Him!

Are you IN Him? - cf. Ga 3:26-27...

The World English Bible

Nov. 10
Isaiah 57-60
Isa 57:1 The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart; and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
Isa 57:2 He enters into peace; they rest in their beds, each one who walks in his uprightness.
Isa 57:3 "But draw near here, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the prostitute.
Isa 57:4 Against whom do you sport yourselves? against whom make you a wide mouth, and put out the tongue? Aren't you children of disobedience, a seed of falsehood,
Isa 57:5 you who inflame yourselves among the oaks, under every green tree; who kill the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?
Isa 57:6 Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion; they, they are your lot; even to them have you poured a drink offering, you have offered an offering. Shall I be appeased for these things?
Isa 57:7 On a high and lofty mountain have you set your bed; there also you went up to offer sacrifice.
Isa 57:8 Behind the doors and the posts have you set up your memorial: for you have uncovered yourself to another than me, and have gone up; you have enlarged your bed, and made you a covenant with them: you loved their bed where you saw it.
Isa 57:9 You went to the king with oil, and did increase your perfumes, and did send your ambassadors far off, and did debase yourself even to Sheol.
Isa 57:10 You were wearied with the length of your way; yet you didn't say, It is in vain: you found a reviving of your strength; therefore you weren't faint.
Isa 57:11 "Of whom have you been afraid and in fear, that you lie, and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven't I held my peace even of long time, and you don't fear me?
Isa 57:12 I will declare your righteousness; and as for your works, they shall not profit you.
Isa 57:13 When you cry, let those who you have gathered deliver you; but the wind shall take them, a breath shall carry them all away: but he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain."
Isa 57:14 He will say, "Cast up, cast up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way of my people."
Isa 57:15 For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Isa 57:16 For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls who I have made.
Isa 57:17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I angry, and struck him; I hid my face and was angry; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.
Isa 57:18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners.
Isa 57:19 I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace, to him who is far off and to him who is near," says Yahweh; "and I will heal them."
Isa 57:20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can't rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.
Isa 57:21 "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."
Isa 58:1 "Cry aloud, don't spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.
Isa 58:2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and didn't forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.
Isa 58:3 'Why have we fasted,' say they, 'and you don't see? why have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge?' "Behold, in the day of your fast you find your own pleasure, and exact all your labors.
Isa 58:4 Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you don't fast this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.
Isa 58:5 Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?
Isa 58:6 "Isn't this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?
Isa 58:7 Isn't it to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?
Isa 58:8 Then your light shall break forth as the morning, and your healing shall spring forth speedily; and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of Yahweh shall be your rear guard.
Isa 58:9 Then you shall call, and Yahweh will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, 'Here I am.' "If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking wickedly;
Isa 58:10 and if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul: then your light shall rise in darkness, and your obscurity be as the noonday;
Isa 58:11 and Yahweh will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in dry places, and make strong your bones; and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters don't fail.
Isa 58:12 Those who shall be of you shall build the old waste places; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
Isa 58:13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy of Yahweh honorable; and shall honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words:
Isa 58:14 then you shall delight yourself in Yahweh; and I will make you to ride on the high places of the earth; and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father:" for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it.
Isa 59:1 Behold, Yahweh's hand is not shortened, that it can't save; neither his ear heavy, that it can't hear:
Isa 59:2 but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
Isa 59:3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue mutters wickedness.
Isa 59:4 None sues in righteousness, and none pleads in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
Isa 59:5 They hatch adders' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper.
Isa 59:6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
Isa 59:7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their paths.
Isa 59:8 The way of peace they don't know; and there is no justice in their goings: they have made them crooked paths; whoever goes therein does not know peace.
Isa 59:9 Therefore is justice far from us, neither does righteousness overtake us: we look for light, but, behold, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.
Isa 59:10 We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.
Isa 59:11 We roar all like bears, and moan sore like doves: we look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.
Isa 59:12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them:
Isa 59:13 transgressing and denying Yahweh, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
Isa 59:14 Justice is turned away backward, and righteousness stands afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and uprightness can't enter.
Isa 59:15 Yes, truth is lacking; and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. Yahweh saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice.
Isa 59:16 He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his own arm brought salvation to him; and his righteousness, it upheld him.
Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head; and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle.
Isa 59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, wrath to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense.
Isa 59:19 So shall they fear the name of Yahweh from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come as a rushing stream, which the breath of Yahweh drives.
Isa 59:20 "A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from disobedience in Jacob," says Yahweh.
Isa 59:21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says Yahweh: "my Spirit who is on you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your seed, nor out of the mouth of your seed's seed," says Yahweh, "from henceforth and forever."
Isa 60:1 "Arise, shine; for your light is come, and the glory of Yahweh is risen on you.
Isa 60:2 For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the peoples; but Yahweh will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

The Composite Bible
The World English Bible
Darby's Translation
Young's Literal Translation

The Composite Bible is a effort to understand the Bible by considering it from different perspectives and different levels of literalcy. First, read the World English Bible (the least literal-black text) for comprehension of the text. Next, read both the World English Bible with the Darby Translation (more literal-blue text)to make comparisons and lastly, read all three versions (Young's is the most literal translation- red text) at one time to obtain an overview of the text. Doing this will make you think about what the Scriptures are actually saying and avoid reading in a superficial manner.
Isaiah

Isaiah 57 1
The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart; and merciful men are taken away, none
considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil [to come].
The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart; and merciful men are taken away,
none considering that the righteous is taken away from before the evil.
The righteous hath perished, And there is none laying [it] to heart, And men of
kindness are gathered, Without any considering that from the face of evil
Gathered is the righteous one.
Isaiah 57 2
He enters into peace; they rest in their beds, each one who walks in his uprightness.

uprightness.

Isaiah 57 3
But draw near here, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the prostitute.
But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the harlot.
And ye, come near hither, O sons of a sorceress, seed of an adulterer, Even thou
dost commit whoredom.
Isaiah 57 4
Against whom do you sport yourselves? against whom make you a wide mouth, and put out the tongue? Aren`t you children of disobedience, a seed of falsehood,
Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom do ye make a wide mouth, [and]
draw out the tongue? Are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,
Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom enlarge ye the mouth?
Prolong ye the tongue? Are not ye children of transgression? a false seed?
Isaiah 57 5
you who inflame yourselves among the oaks, under every green tree; who kill the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?
inflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the
valleys under the clefts of the rocks?
Who are inflamed among oaks, under every green tree, Slaughtering the children
in valleys, Under clefts of the rocks.
Isaiah 57 6
Among the smooth [stones] of the valley is your portion; they, they are your lot; even to them have you poured a drink-offering, you have offered an offering. Shall I be appeased for these things?
Among the smooth [stones] of the torrent is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to
them hast thou poured out a drink-offering, thou hast offered an oblation. Shall I be
comforted myself as to these things?
Among the smooth things of a brook [is] thy portion, They -- they [are] thy lot, Also
to them thou hast poured out an oblation, Thou hast caused a present to ascend,
For these things am I comforted?
Isaiah 57 7
On a high and lofty mountain have you set your bed; there also went you up to offer sacrifice.

Behind the doors and the posts have you set up your memorial: for you have uncovered [yourself] to another than me, and are gone up; you have enlarged your bed, and made you a covenant with them: you loved their bed where you saw it.
Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance: for apart from me,
thou hast uncovered thyself, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and hast made
agreement with them; thou lovedst their bed, thou sawest their nakedness.
And behind the door, and the post, Thou hast set up thy memorial, For from Me
thou hast removed, and goest up, Thou hast enlarged thy couch, And dost covenant
for thyself among them, Thou hast loved their couch, the station thou sawest,
Isaiah 57 9
You went to the king with oil, and did increase your perfumes, and did send your ambassadors far off, and did debase yourself even to Sheol.
And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst multiply thy perfumes, and didst
send thy messengers afar off, and didst debase thyself unto Sheol.
And goest joyfully to the king in ointment, And dost multiply thy perfumes, And
sendest thine ambassadors afar off, And humblest thyself unto Sheol.
Isaiah 57 10
You were wearied with the length of your way; yet you didn`t say, It is in vain: you found a
reviving of your strength; therefore you weren`t faint.
Thou wast wearied by the multitude of thy ways; [but] thou saidst not, It is of no avail.
Thou didst find a quickening of thy strength; therefore thou wast not sick [of it].
In the greatness of thy way thou hast laboured, Thou hast not said, `It is
desperate.` The life of thy hand thou hast found, Therefore thou hast not been sick.
Isaiah 57 11
Of whom have you been afraid and in fear, that you lie, and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven`t I held my peace even of long time, and you don`t fear me?
And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not
remembered me, nor taken it to heart? Have not I even of long time held my peace, and
thou fearest me not?
And of whom hast thou been afraid, and fearest, That thou liest, and Me hast not
remembered? Thou hast not laid [it] to thy heart, Am not I silent, even from of
old? And Me thou fearest not?
Isaiah 57 12
I will declare your righteousness; and as for your works, they shall not profit you.
I will declare thy righteousness, and thy works; and they shall not profit thee.
I declare thy righteousness, and thy works, And they do not profit thee.
Isaiah 57 13
When you cry, let those who you have gathered deliver you; but the wind shall take them, a
breath shall carry them all away: but he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.
When thou criest, let them that are gathered by thee deliver thee! But a wind shall carry
them all away, a breath shall take them; but he that putteth his trust in me shall inherit
the land, and possess my holy mountain.
When thou criest, let thy gatherings deliver thee, And all of them carry away doth
wind, Take away doth vanity, And whoso is trusting in Me inheriteth the land,
And doth possess My holy mountain.

For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, and whose name is Holy: I
dwell in the high and holy [place], and with him that is of a contrite and humble spirit,
to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
For thus said the high and exalted One, Inhabiting eternity, and holy [is] His
name: `In the high and holy place I dwell, And with the bruised and humble of
spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of bruised ones,`
Isaiah 57 16
For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls who I have made.
For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would fail
before me, and the souls [which] I have made.
For, not to the age do I strive, nor for ever am I wroth, For the spirit from before
Me is feeble, And the souls I have made.
Isaiah 57 17
For the iniquity of his covetousness was I angry, and struck him; I hid [my face] and was angry; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.
For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid me, and was wroth,
and he went on backslidingly in the way of his heart.

-- and am wroth, And he goeth on turning back in the way of his heart.

him and to his mourning ones.

nigh, saith Jehovah; and I will heal him.
Producing the fruit of the lips, `Peace, peace,` to the far off, and to the near, And I
have healed him, said Jehovah.
Isaiah 57 20
But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can`t rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.

mire and dirt.
And the wicked [are] as the driven out sea, For to rest it is not able, And its
waters cast out filth and mire.

Cry aloud, don`t spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their
disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

Call with the throat, restrain not, As a trumpet lift up thy voice, And declare to
My people their transgression, And to the house of Jacob their sins;
Isaiah 58 2
Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and didn`t forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.
Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that doeth
righteousness, and hath not forsaken the ordinance of their God; they ask of me the
ordinances of righteousness, they take delight in approaching to God:
Seeing -- Me day by day they seek, And the knowledge of My ways they desire, As a
nation that righteousness hath done, And the judgment of its God hath not
forsaken, They ask of me judgments of righteousness, The drawing near of God
they desire:
Isaiah 58 3
Why have we fasted, [say they], and you don`t see? [why] have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find [your own] pleasure, and exact all your labors.
-- Wherefore have we fasted, and thou seest not; have afflicted our soul, and thou takest no
knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find what pleaseth [you], and exact all your
labours.
`Why have we fasted, and Thou hast not seen? We have afflicted our soul, and Thou
knowest not.` Lo, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, And all your labours ye
exact.
Isaiah 58 4
Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you don`t fast this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

do not at present fast, to cause your voice to be heard on high.
Lo, for strife and debate ye fast, And to smite with the fist of wickedness, Ye fast
not as [to]-day, To sound in the high place your voice.
Isaiah 58 5
Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahweh?
Is such the fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul, -- that he should bow
down his head as a bulrush, and spread sackcloth and ashes [under him]? Wilt thou call
this a fast, and a day acceptable to Jehovah?
Like this is the fast that I choose? The day of a man`s afflicting his soul? To bow as
a reed his head, And sackcloth and ashes spread out? This dost thou call a fast,
And a desirable day -- to Jehovah?
Isaiah 58 6
Isn`t this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?
Is not this the fast which I have chosen: to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the
thongs of the yoke, and to send forth free the crushed, and that ye break every yoke?
Is not this the fast that I chose -- To loose the bands of wickedness, To shake off the
burdens of the yoke, And to send out the oppressed free, And every yoke ye draw
off?
Isaiah 58 7
Isn`t it to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?
Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring to thy house the needy
wanderers; when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from thine own flesh?
Is it not to deal to the hungry thy bread, And the mourning poor bring home, That
thou seest the naked and cover him, And from thine own flesh hide not thyself?

Then shalt thou call, and Jehovah will answer; thou shalt cry, and he will say, Here I am. If
thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger and the
unjust speech,

and Jehovah will guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and strengthen
thy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a water-spring, whose
waters deceive not.

outlet of waters, whose waters lie not.

foundations [that have remained] from generation to generation; and thou shalt be
called, Repairer of the breaches, restorer of frequented paths.

generations thou raisest up, And one calleth thee, `Repairer of the breach,
Restorer of paths to rest in.`

If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, [and] the holy of Yahweh honorable; and shall honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking [your own] words:
If thou turn back thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and
call the sabbath a delight, the holy [day] of Jehovah, honourable; and thou honour him,
not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [idle] words;
If thou dost turn from the sabbath thy foot, Doing thine own pleasure on My holy
day, And hast cried to the sabbath, `A delight,` To the holy of Jehovah, `Honoured,`

pleasure, And speaking a word.

of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of

places of earth, And have caused thee to eat the inheritance of Jacob thy father,
For the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken!

from hearing.
Isaiah 59 2
but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid
[his] face from you, that he doth not hear.

sins have hidden The Presence from you -- from hearing.

For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue mutters wickedness.

perverseness, and bearing iniquity.

and behold darkness; for brightness, [but] we walk in obscurity.

wait for light, and lo, darkness, For brightness -- in thick darkness we go,
Isaiah 59 10
We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at
noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.
We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at
midday as in the twilight; amongst the flourishing we are as the dead.

stumbled at noon as at twilight, In desolate places as the dead.

truth hath been feeble in the street, And straightforwardness is not able to enter,

saw [it], and it was evil in his sight that there was no judgment.

a spoil. And Jehovah seeth, and it is evil in His eyes, That there is no judgment.

Him.

and he put on garments of vengeance [for] clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

His head, And He putteth on garments of vengeance [for] clothing, And is covered,
as [with] an upper-robe, [with] zeal.

enemies, To the isles [their] deed He repayeth.

glory. When the adversary shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Jehovah will lift up a
banner against him.

raised an ensign against him.
