Isaiah 17-20

Isa 17:1 The burden of Damascus: "Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.

Isa 17:2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken. They will be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

Isa 17:3 The fortress shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria. They will be as the glory of the children of Israel," says Yahweh of Armies.

Isa 17:4 "It will happen in that day that the glory of Jacob will be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh will become lean.

Isa 17:5 It will be like when the harvester gathers the wheat, and his arm reaps the grain. Yes, it will be like when one gleans grain in the valley of Rephaim.

Isa 17:6 Yet gleanings will be left there, like the shaking of an olive tree, two or three olives in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outermost branches of a fruitful tree," says Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Isa 17:7 In that day, people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.

Isa 17:8 They will not look to the altars, the work of their hands; neither shall they respect that which their fingers have made, either the Asherim, or the incense altars.

Isa 17:9 In that day, their strong cities will be like the forsaken places in the woods and on the mountain top, which were forsaken from before the children of Israel; and it will be a desolation.

Isa 17:10 For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength. Therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set out foreign seedlings.

Isa 17:11 In the day of your planting, you hedge it in. In the morning, you make your seed blossom, but the harvest flees away in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

Isa 17:12 Ah, the uproar of many peoples, who roar like the roaring of the seas; and the rushing of nations, that rush like the rushing of mighty waters!

Isa 17:13 The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters: but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far off, and will be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

Isa 17:14 At evening, behold, terror! Before the morning, they are no more. This is the portion of those who plunder us, and the lot of those who rob us.

Isa 18:1 Ah, the land of the rustling of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia;

Isa 18:2 that sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus on the waters, saying, "Go, you swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide!"

Isa 18:3 All you inhabitants of the world, and you dwellers on the earth, when a banner is lifted up on the mountains, look! When the trumpet is blown, listen!

Isa 18:4 For Yahweh said to me, "I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest."

Isa 18:5 For before the harvest, when the blossom is over, and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and he will cut down and take away the spreading branches.

Isa 18:6 They will be left together for the ravenous birds of the mountains, and for the animals of the earth. The ravenous birds will summer on them, and all the animals of the earth will winter on them.

Isa 18:7 In that time, a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth, even from a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion.

Isa 19:1 The burden of Egypt: "Behold, Yahweh rides on a swift cloud, and comes to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence; and the heart of Egypt will melt in its midst.

Isa 19:2 I will stir up the Egyptians against the Egyptians, and they will fight everyone against his brother, and everyone against his neighbor; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.

Isa 19:3 The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst. I will destroy its counsel. They will seek the idols, the charmers, those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards.

Isa 19:4 I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel lord. A fierce king will rule over them," says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.

Isa 19:5 The waters will fail from the sea, and the river will be wasted and become dry.

Isa 19:6 The rivers will become foul. The streams of Egypt will be diminished and dried up. The reeds and flags will wither away.

Isa 19:7 The meadows by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all the sown fields of the Nile, will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

Isa 19:8 The fishermen will lament, and all those who fish in the Nile will mourn, and those who spread nets on the waters will languish.

Isa 19:9 Moreover those who work in combed flax, and those who weave white cloth, will be confounded.

Isa 19:10 The pillars will be broken in pieces. All those who work for hire will be grieved in soul.

Isa 19:11 The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish. The counsel of the wisest counselors of Pharaoh has become stupid. How do you say to Pharaoh, "I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?"

Isa 19:12 Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you now; and let them know what Yahweh of Armies has purposed concerning Egypt.

Isa 19:13 The princes of Zoan have become fools. The princes of Memphis are deceived. They have caused Egypt to go astray, who are the cornerstone of her tribes.

Isa 19:14 Yahweh has mixed a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in all of its works, like a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

Isa 19:15 Neither shall there be for Egypt any work, which head or tail, palm branch or rush, may do.

Isa 19:16 In that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of Yahweh of Armies, which he shakes over them.

Isa 19:17 The land of Judah will become a terror to Egypt. Everyone to whom mention is made of it will be afraid, because of the plans of Yahweh of Armies, which he determines against it.

Isa 19:18 In that day, there will be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan, and swear to Yahweh of Armies. One will be called "The city of destruction."

Isa 19:19 In that day, there will be an altar to Yahweh in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to Yahweh at its border.

Isa 19:20 It will be for a sign and for a witness to Yahweh of Armies in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to Yahweh because of oppressors, and he will send them a savior and a defender, and he will deliver them.

Isa 19:21 Yahweh will be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know Yahweh in that day. Yes, they will worship with sacrifice and offering, and will vow a vow to Yahweh, and will perform it.

Isa 19:22 Yahweh will strike Egypt, striking and healing. They will return to Yahweh, and he will be entreated by them, and will heal them.

Isa 19:23 In that day there will be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria; and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians.

Isa 19:24 In that day, Israel will be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth;

Isa 19:25 because Yahweh of Armies has blessed them, saying, "Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance."

Isa 20:1 In the year that Tartan came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it;

Isa 20:2 at that time Yahweh spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, "Go, and loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your shoes from off your feet." He did so, walking naked and barefoot.

Isa 20:3 Yahweh said, "As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder concerning Egypt and concerning Ethiopia,

Isa 20:4 so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

Isa 20:5 They will be dismayed and confounded, because of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

Isa 20:6 The inhabitants of this coast land will say in that day, 'Behold, this is our expectation, where we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria. And we, how will we escape?' "

And it hath come to pass, in that day, Wax poor doth the honour of Jacob, And the

It shall be as when the harvester gathers the standing grain, and his arm reaps the ears; yes, it shall be as when one gleans ears in the valley of Rephaim.

And it shall be as when the reaper gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm;

yea, it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

And it hath come to pass, As the gathering by the reaper of the standing corn,

ears in the valley of Rephaim,

Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as the shaking of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost branches of a fruitful tree, says Yahweh, the God of Israel.

And a gleaning shall be left in it, as at the shaking of an olive-tree: two, three berries

above, in the tree-top; four, five in its fruitful boughs, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel.

And left in him have been gleanings, As the compassing of an olive, Two -- three

berries on the top of a branch, Four -- five on the fruitful boughs, The affirmation of Jehovah, God of Israel!

In that day shall his strong cities be as the forsaken tract in the woodland, and the

mountain-top which they forsook before the children of Israel; and there shall be

desolation.

In that day are the cities of his strength As the forsaken thing of the forest, And

the branch that they have left, Because of the sons of Israel, It also hath been a desolation.

Isaiah 17 10

For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not been mindful of the rock of your strength; therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set it with strange slips.

For thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of

thy strength; therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plantations, and shalt set them with

foreign slips:

Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, And the rock of thy strength

hast not remembered, Therefore thou plantest plants of pleasantness, And with a strange slip sowest it,

In the day of your planting you hedge it in, and in the morning you make your seed to blossom; but the harvest flees away in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

in the day of thy planting wilt thou make [them] to grow, and on the morrow wilt thou

make thy seed to flourish; [but] the harvest will flee in the day of taking possession, and

the sorrow will be incurable.

In the day thy plant thou causest to become great, And in the morning thy seed

makest to flourish, A heap [is] the harvest in a day of overflowing, And of mortal pain.

Isaiah 17 12

Ah, the uproar of many peoples, who roar like the roaring of the seas; and the rushing of nations, that rush like the rushing of mighty waters!

Ha! a tumult of many peoples! they make a noise as the noise of the seas; -- and the

rushing of nations! they rush as the rushing of mighty waters.

Wo [to] the multitude of many peoples, As the sounding of seas they sound; And [to]

the wasting of nations, As the wasting of mighty waters they are wasted.

Isaiah 17 13

The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but he shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

The nations rush as the rushing of many waters; but he will rebuke them, and they shall

flee far away, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like

a whirling [of dust] before the whirlwind:

Nations as the wasting of many waters are wasted, And He hath pushed against it,

And it hath fled afar off, And been pursued as chaff of hills before wind, And as a

rolling thing before a hurricane.

Isaiah 17 14

At evening, behold, terror; [and] before the morning they are no more. This is the portion of those who despoil us, and the lot of those who rob us.

behold, at eventide, trouble; before the morning they are not. This is the portion of them

that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

At even-time, lo, terror, before morning it is not, This [is] the portion of our

spoilers, And the lot of our plunderers!

Isaiah 18 1

Ah, the land of the rustling of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia;

Ha! land shadowing with wings, which art beyond the rivers of Cush,

Ho, land shadowed [with] wings, That [is] beyond the rivers of Cush,

Isaiah 18 2

that sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus on the waters, [saying], Go, you swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide!

that sendest ambassadors over the sea, and in vessels of papyrus upon the waters,

from their existence and thenceforth; to a nation of continued waiting and of treading

down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

That is sending by sea ambassadors, Even with implements of reed on the face of

the waters, -- Go, ye light messengers, Unto a nation drawn out and peeled, Unto a

people fearful from its beginning and onwards, A nation meeting out by line, and

treading down, Whose land floods have spoiled.

Isaiah 18 3

All you inhabitants of the world, and you dwellers on the earth, when an ensign is lifted up on the mountains, see you; and when the trumpet is blown, hear you.

dwelling-place like clear heat upon herbs, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

For thus said Jehovah unto me, `I rest, and I look on My settled place, As a clear

heat on an herb. As a thick cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

In that time shall a present be brought unto Jehovah of hosts of a people scattered and

ravaged, -- and from a people terrible from their existence and thenceforth, a nation of

continued waiting and of treading down, whose land the rivers have spoiled, ... to the

place of the name of Jehovah of hosts, the mount Zion.

At that time brought is a present to Jehovah of Hosts, A nation drawn out and

peeled. Even of a people fearful from the beginning hitherto, A nation meting out

by line, and treading down, Whose land floods have spoiled, Unto the place of the

name of Jehovah of Hosts -- mount Zion!`

Isaiah 19 1

Isaiah 19 2

I will stir up the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight everyone against his

brother, and everyone against his neighbor; city against city, [and] kingdom against kingdom.

And I will incite the Egyptians against the Egyptians; and they shall fight every one

against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, kingdom

against kingdom.

And I armed Egyptians against Egyptians, And they fought, each against his

brother, And each against his neighbour, City against city, kingdom against kingdom.

Isaiah 19 3

The spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst of it; and I will destroy the counsel of it: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to those who have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst of it, and I will destroy the counsel thereof;

and they shall seek unto the idols and unto the conjurers, and unto the necromancers,

and unto the soothsayers.

And emptied out hath been in its midst the spirit of Egypt. And its counsel I

swallow up, And they have sought unto the idols, And unto the charmers, And unto

those having familiar spirits, And unto the wizards.

Isaiah 19 4

I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over

them, says the Lord, Yahweh of Hosts.

And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord, and a fierce king shall

rule over them, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

And I have delivered the Egyptians Into the hand of a hard lord, And a strong king

doth rule over them, An affirmation of the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts.

Isaiah 19 5

The waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and become dry.

And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up;

And failed have waters from the sea, And a river is wasted and dried up.

Isaiah 19 6

The rivers shall become foul; the streams of Egypt shall be diminished and dried up; the reeds and flags shall wither away.

and the rivers shall stink, and the streams of Egypt shall be diminished and drain away:

the reeds and sedges shall wither.

And they have turned away the flowings, Weak and dried up have been brooks of

the bulwark, Reed and flag have withered.

Isaiah 19 7

The meadows by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all the sown fields of the Nile, shall

become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

The meadows by the Nile, on the banks of the Nile, and everything sown by the Nile, shall

be dried up, be driven away, and be no [more].

Exposed things by the brook, by the edge of the brook, And every sown thing of the

brook, hath withered, It hath been driven away, and is not.

Isaiah 19 8

The fishermen shall lament, and all those who cast angle into the Nile shall mourn, and those who spread nets on the waters shall languish.

And the fishers shall mourn, and all they that cast fish-hook into the Nile shall lament,

and they that spread net upon the waters shall languish.

And lamented have the fishers, And mourned have all casting angle into a brook,

And those spreading nets on the face of the waters have languished.

Isaiah 19 9

Moreover those who work in combed flax, and those who weave white cloth, shall be confounded.

And they that work in fine flax, and they that weave white stuffs shall be ashamed.

And ashamed have been makers of fine flax, And weavers of net-works.

Isaiah 19 10

The pillars [of Egypt] shall be broken in pieces; all those who work for hire [shall be] grieved in soul.

And her pillars shall be broken in pieces, and all workers for hire shall be sad of soul.

And its foundations have been smitten, All making wages [are] afflicted in soul.

Isaiah 19 11

The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish; the counsel of the wisest counselors of Pharaoh is become brutish: how say you to Pharaoh, I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?

They are but fools, the princes of Zoan, the wise counsellors of Pharaoh: [their] counsel is

become senseless. How say ye unto Pharaoh, I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient

kings?

Only, fools [are] the princes of Zoan, The counsel of the wise ones of the counsellors

of Pharaoh hath become brutish. How say ye unto Pharaoh, `A son of the wise am I, a son of kings of antiquity?`

Isaiah 19 12

Where then are your wise men? and let them tell you now; and let them know what Yahweh of Hosts has purposed concerning Egypt.

Where are they then, thy wise [men]? Let them now tell thee, and let them make known

what Jehovah of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.

Where [are] they now, thy wise ones? Yea, let them tell to thee, I pray thee, And

they know what Jehovah of Hosts hath counselled against Egypt!

Isaiah 19 13

The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Memphis are deceived; they have caused Egypt to go astray, who are the corner-stone of her tribes.

The princes of Zoan are become foolish, the princes of Noph are deceived; and the corner-

stones of its tribes have caused Egypt to err.

Foolish have been princes of Zoan, Lifted up have been princes of Noph, And they

have caused Egypt to err, The chief of her tribes.

Isaiah 19 14

Yahweh has mingled a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in every work of it, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

Jehovah hath mingled a spirit of perverseness in the midst thereof; and they have caused

Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunkard staggereth in his vomit.

Jehovah hath mingled in her midst A spirit of perverseness, And they have caused

Egypt to err in all its work, As a drunkard erreth in his vomit.

Isaiah 19 15

Neither shall there be for Egypt any work, which head or tail, palm-branch or rush, may  do.

Neither shall there be any work for Egypt, which the head or tail, palm-branch or rush, may do.

And there is no work to Egypt, That head or tail, branch or reed, may do.

Isaiah 19 16

In that day shall the Egyptians be like women; and they shall tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of Yahweh of Hosts, which he shakes over them.

In that day shall Egypt be like unto women; and it shall tremble and fear because of the

shaking of the hand of Jehovah of hosts, which he shaketh over it.

In that day is Egypt like women, And it hath mourned, and been afraid, Because of

the waving of the hand of Jehovah of Hosts, That He is waving over it.

Isaiah 19 17

The land of Judah shall become a terror to Egypt; everyone to whom mention is made of it shall be afraid, because of the purpose of Yahweh of Hosts, which he purposes against it.

And the land of Judah shall be a dismay unto Egypt: every one that thinketh of it shall be
